Report: 49ers RB Jeff Wilson (knee surgery) out 4-6 months

San Francisco 49ers running back Jeff Wilson, the team’s leading rusher in 2020, is expected to miss the start of the regular season after undergoing surgery to fix a torn meniscus, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Per the report, Wilson will miss the next four to six months while recovering. No definitive date was given when either the injury or surgery occurred.

The 49ers re-signed Wilson as a restricted free agent in January after a solid season for the former undrafted free agent out of North Texas. Injuries to Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman gave Wilson an opportunity for playing time, which he took advantage of with a team-high 600 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 126 carries in 12 games (three starts).

He also caught 13 passes for 133 yards and three more scores, leading the 49ers with 10 total touchdowns.

In three NFL seasons, Wilson has 971 yards and 11 touchdowns on 219 carries to go with 28 catches for 265 yards and four TDs in 28 games (five starts).

The 49ers look to feature a completely different depth chart at running back in 2021. This offseason, they signed free agent Wayne Gallman (career-high 682 rushing yards, six touchdowns in 2020 with New York Giants) and drafted two other backs, former Ohio State star Trey Sermon (third round) and Elijah Mitchell (sixth round) our of Louisiana.
