Report: Falcons interview Morris for head coach job

The Atlanta Falcons were scheduled to interview interim head coach Raheem Morris for the permanent position on Friday, multiple media outlets reported.

Morris has been at the helm of the Falcons since Dan Quinn was fired on Oct. 11. General manager Thomas Dimitroff was fired the same day, hours after the team lost at home 23-16 to Carolina for its first 0-5 start since 1997.

Since then, the Falcons are 4-6. They’ve been competitive under Morris, with five of their losses coming by five points or fewer.

Morris, 44, was the head coach in Tampa Bay for three seasons (2009-11), ending with a 17-31 record.

At least one member of the organization, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, has endorsed Morris for the job.

“In this day and age, this current player, this current culture in the NFL, there is not a better candidate in my opinion,” Ulbrich said of Morris earlier this week. “You have to have the ability to relate to the current player. You have to have the ability to create the environment for the current player that is, it’s not necessarily built in the old NFL world in my opinion for these kids to thrive. They are just not raised the same way. Football is not played the same way. He’s one of those rare guys that has that ability to create that environment that is necessary.”

The Falcons end their season on Sunday at Tampa Bay. In their first meeting, the Buccaneers came from behind to win 31-27 in Week 15.
