Report: Giants newly signed C Joe Looney retiring

Veteran offensive lineman Joe Looney, signed over the weekend by the New York Giants, is retiring, ESPN reported Wednesday.

He becomes the second recently signed free agent to retire in as many days. Linebacker Todd Davis retired Tuesday after signing Saturday.

Looney, 30, played two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2013-14), one with the Tennessee Titans (2015) and five with the Dallas Cowboys (2016-20). It was in Dallas that he played for Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, formerly the Cowboys head coach.

Looney sounded excited about playing for the Giants when he met the media on Monday.

“I love playing football,” Looney said. “It’s great to be here. I know coach Garrett. He’s a great guy. It’s always exciting to work with a new team. I’m just very blessed to be here for this opportunity.”

On Tuesday, the Giants announced that Davis had been placed on the reserve/retired list as the team began its first day of training in pads. They had yet to announce Looney’s departure.

Looney appeared in 13 games (12 starts) for the Cowboys in 2020, playing 67 percent of the offensive snaps.
