Reports: Jags to sign Tim Tebow … as TE

The Jacksonville Jaguars are planning to sign former first-round pick Tim Tebow to give him a shot at making the team as a backup tight end, NFL Network and NBC Sports reported Monday.

The move would reunite Tebow with head coach Urban Meyer, his collegiate coach at Florida from 2006-09.

Tebow is 33 and hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2012. He was a first-round pick (No. 25 overall) of the Denver Broncos in 2010.

Tebow worked out for Meyer and the Jaguars as a tight end last month, per reports.

The Jags reportedly are waiting until after this weekend’s rookie minicamp to make a decision. They released veteran TE Tyler Eifert last week but picked Luke Farrell in the fifth round of the NFL draft. They signed Chris Manhertz to a two-year contract in March to be their No. 1 tight end.

Tebow played minor league baseball in the New York Mets organization, batting .223/.299/.338 in 287 games over three seasons. He hit 48 doubles and 18 home runs while recording 107 RBIs and stealing five bases.

He retired from pro ball in February.

Tebow was part of two national championship teams at Florida under Meyer.

As a sophomore in 2007, he threw for 3,132 yards and 29 touchdowns, with just six interceptions. He also rushed for 828 yards and 22 scores and easily won the Heisman.

Tebow played two seasons in Denver before being traded to the New York Jets in 2012.

With the Jets, he saw limited time in 2012, completing six of his eight pass attempts before leaving the league after that season.

Tebow wound up with an 8-6 regular-season record as an NFL starting quarterback, completing 47.9 percent of his passes for 2,422 yards and 17 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He had a 1-1 record as a starter in the postseason.
