Reports: Jets OL Alex Lewis retires suddenly
New York Jets offensive lineman Alex Lewis, who left the team earlier this month, has decided to retire, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
The Jets placed Lewis on the exempt/left squad list after Lewis’ last practice on Aug. 5. Lewis walked off the field with a head injury and left the team after that.
Lewis, 29, reportedly clashed with players and coaches last season amid the Jets’ 2-14 season but was encouraged by the arrival of a new coaching staff for 2021. He took a nearly $3 million pay cut this past offseason to stay with the team.
He was expected to back up rookie Alijah Vera-Tucker, the No. 14 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, this season.
Lewis played in 44 games (39 starts) for the Baltimore Ravens (2016, 2018) and Jets. He missed the entire 2017 season with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
