Reports: Patriots add veteran S Adrian Colbert

The New England Patriots are adding veteran safety Adrian Colbert to their roster, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Colbert, a seventh-round pick out of Miami in the 2017 NFL Draft, was a member of both the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants last season. Colbert was signed by the Chiefs prior to the 2020 season but was cut in August.

The Giants claimed Colbert off waivers in September, and he played in six games (two starts) and recorded 13 tackles. He spent time on injured reserve before returning in December to play in the Giants’ final three games of the season.

Colbert, originally drafted by San Francisco, played 21 games for the 49ers over his first two seasons. The 49ers waived him in 2019, and Colbert was signed to the Seattle Seahawks practice squad before being picked up by the Dolphins ahead of the 2019 season. He played six games (five starts) in 2019 and recorded 22 tackles.

The Patriots also signed former pro baseball player Tyler Gaffney, NFL Network reported. The 30-year-old Gaffney, a running back, spent time on the 49ers’ practice squad last season and was recently in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system. Gaffney was drafted in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers.
