Reports: Teryl Austin to replace Keith Butler as Steelers DC

The Pittsburgh Steelers stayed in house for their new defensive coordinator, moving Teryl Austin into the post, according to multiple reports.

The deal is expected to be announced by Monday at the latest, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Austin will replace longtime Steelers coach Keith Butler, who retired at the end of the season.

Austin, 56, has been on the Steelers’ staff for three seasons and most recently served as senior defensive assistant and secondary coach. He has defensive coordinator experience with the Detroit Lions (2014-17) and Cincinnati Bengals (2018), while also serving as a defensive backs coach with the Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens.

When Butler missed a game this season while in COVID-19 protocol, Austin helped with defensive coordinator duties.

Butler spent 19 seasons on Pittsburgh’s coaching staff, helping the team win a pair of Super Bowls as the linebackers coach before becoming defensive coordinator in January 2015.

Austin was being considered for the defensive coordinator role with the New York Giants, according to reports, but had not interviewed for the position.

Austin is a native of Sharon, Pa., just north of Pittsburgh, and a University of Pittsburgh alum.
