Richard Sherman set for arraignment in domestic violence case

Free agent NFL cornerback Richard Sherman is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in connection with his arrest this week.

Prosecutors in King County, Wash., filed documents Friday charging the former All-Pro with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, endangering roadway workers and two domestic violence counts — second-degree criminal trespass and third-degree malicious mischief.

Sherman’s arraignment was set for 2 p.m. Pacific time.

The 33-year-old Sherman was arrested in Redmond, Wash., after attempting to break into his in-laws’ house early Wednesday. He was released Thursday without bail.

He issued a statement Friday before the hearing.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night,” Sherman said. “I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need. I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time.”

Authorities said Sherman crashed into a barrier in a construction zone, before the alleged attempted break-in. Sherman reportedly was upset that his children were taken from him.

Under the terms of his release, Sherman may not possess a weapon, use alcohol or nonprescription drugs, or have any contact with his father-in-law.

Details of the case have been sealed.

Sherman, unsigned for the upcoming NFL season, is a vice president on the NFL Player Association’s executive committee. And spent the past two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.

Sherman missed a career-high 11 games last season. The five-time Pro Bowl selection recorded 18 tackles and one interception in five games before being released in February.

In the previous season, Sherman collected 61 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defended in 15 games while making his fifth Pro Bowl.

Sherman’s first seven seasons were spent with the NFC West rival Seahawks, with whom he made two Super Bowl appearances (winning one) and grabbed 32 interceptions. Sherman also earned three first-team All-Pro selections from 2012-14 as part of Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense.
