Saints place Brees on IR (ribs)

The first-place New Orleans Saints are going to have to try to get by without quarterback Drew Brees for at least three weeks.

The Saints (7-2) officially placed Brees on injured reserve Friday with a rib injury. Brees sustained broken ribs, according to multiple reports, and a collapsed lung, according to ESPN, over the course of a couple weeks. He did not play in the second half of the Saints’ 27-13 home win over the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday.

Brees was on the Saints’ injury report on Wednesday and Thursday and did not practice.

Brees’ first missed game will be this Sunday at home against the Atlanta Falcons. He will also miss the Saints’ games on Nov. 29 at the Denver Broncos and Dec. 6 at the Falcons.

Jameis Winston replaced Brees against the 49ers, but multiple reports say that Taysom Hill will get the start against Atlanta after Hill got all the first-team reps in practice this week. Hill has served the Saints over the past four seasons as a read-option QB/RB/WR/TE/FB/special-teams specialist. But he has not thrown a touchdown pass since 2016 when he was still in college at BYU.

The Saints are a half game ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) in the NFC South division.
