49ers vs Giants Betting Pick

The San Francisco 49ers are straight up limping into Week 3. They have 10 players listed as OUT due to injury, and that list could grow before Sunday’s game. The New York Giants also suffered some serious injuries in Week 2, and will be without their best player in Saquon Barkley for the remainder of the year.

Even with Saqoun out, San Francisco is just too banged up for me to take them in this one. I like the Giants +4.5 (which has been bet down to +3.5 as of Friday).

Why the Giants will cover the spread

With Saquon done for the year, the Giants will have to transition to more of a passing offense. Unfortunately, their passing offense has struggled thus far. Daniel Jones has 2 TDs and 3 INTs to start the year, however he has been derailed by tough defenses. He has played the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers to start the season, who are some of the better defenses in the NFL.

This week could get easier for Jones. San Francisco will be without four defensive starters including two of their best defenders in Richard Sherman and Nick Bosa. This will be a breath of fresh air for Jones, and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett should be able to scheme up a successful passing game against the 49ers.

Why the 49ers will cover the spread

No team has been hit harder by the injury bug than the 49ers. They will be without at least six starters, including their starting QB Jimmy Garrapolo. Insert backup Nick Mullens, who actually looked solid in backup duty last week. He finished 8 for 11, and was able to lead the 49ers to a victory in Week 2.

Mullens is certainly capable of getting a win against the Giants. The Giants defense has struggled through two weeks, and lacks any big name talent. The Giants only have one pro bowl combined on their entire defense. With the 49ers offensive line relatively healthy, they should be able to put some points on the board.

49ers Giants Pick

Overall I think the 49ers injuries will be too much to overcome. I think they still have a chance at winning this game, but -4.5 is just way too big a line for the 49ers. I like the Giants to keep this within a field goal, so even the line moves -3.5 keeps it safe.
