Seahawks TE Luke Willson retires, citing health scare

Longtime NFL tight end Luke Willson announced his retirement from the game Wednesday, one day after returning to the Seattle Seahawks.

Willson revealed that during the offseason, he had a “severe” pericardial effusion, defined by the Mayo Clinic as a buildup of excess fluid around the heart.

“That situation has challenged me as an individual and changed my perspective on a lot of things with regards to my life,” Willson wrote in a statement posted to social media. “After reflecting on everything yesterday and being in the building, I have decided that it’s time for me to begin with the next chapter of my life.”

Willson, 31, was a fifth-round draft pick by the Seahawks in 2013 and spent parts of seven seasons with the club. He also played for the Detroit Lions in 2018 and the Baltimore Ravens for part of last year.

After spending most of the offseason as a free agent, Willson signed with the Seahawks on Tuesday before changing his mind about his future.

“To the city of Seattle and the 12s: The Love and support you’ve shown me throughout my time here has been truly special,” Willson wrote. “Thank you. You really are the best fans in the world.”

The Canada native retires with 111 catches for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns in 102 career games (52 starts) with Seattle, Detroit and Baltimore.
