Stephen Jones: Cowboys owners believe in McCarthy

Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has the support of ownership, despite a 2-5 record to start his tenure with the team.

Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ executive vice president and director of player personnel, said Monday he isn’t second-guessing the team’s hiring of McCarthy.

“I know we’ve got the right head guy for the job,” Jones said Monday on 105.3 The Fan. “These things just take time. I know our fans are frustrated. We certainly understand the criticism that’s come our way. But we’ve got to go to work.”

The Cowboys lost quarterback Dak Prescott with a compound leg fracture earlier this month, and his backup, veteran Andy Dalton, is in concussion protocol after a taking a shot to the head on Sunday in the loss to the Washington Football Team.

They have been outscored by 67 points on the season, and their defense is 27th in the league, giving up 408.1 yards per game.

“You know Jerry and I are big believers in sticking with the staff,” Jones said, speaking for his father, the team owner. “We’ve just got to give them their opportunity to work with these guys and continue to implement what they’re trying to get accomplished.”

The Cowboys stuck with head coach Jason Garrett for nine-plus seasons before not bringing him back for the 2020 season. He led the Cowboys to the playoffs just three times.

The Joneses tabbed as his replacement McCarthy, who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers after the 2010 season. He has a 127-82-2 career record with the Packers (2006-18) and Cowboys.

Despite their 2-5 record, the Cowboys are in the mix for a division title in the subpar NFC East. The division-leading Philadelphia Eagles have a 2-4-1 record, and the two teams will meet on Sunday night.
