Texans waive veteran WR Kenny Stills

The Houston Texans waived wide receiver Kenny Stills on Friday one day after he was inactive because of a quad injury for the team’s Thanksgiving road win over the Detroit Lions, according to multiple reports.

In 10 games for Houston this season Stills had just 11 catches for 144 yards and one touchdown. He played in the Texans’ 10-7 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Nov. 15, making just one catch for six yards in the loss. Then he played just four snaps the next week against the New England Patriots.

Stills last season had 40 catches for 461 yards and four touchdowns.

He came to the Texans from the Miami Dolphins in a trade on Sept. 1, 2019 along with a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2021 sixth-round pick and tackle Laremy Tunsil. In return the Texans sent Miami a 2020 first-round pick, a 2021 first-round pick, a 2021 second-round pick, Johnson Bademosi and Julie’n Davenport.

The 28-year-old was a fifth-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent two seasons with the Saints before being traded to the Dolphins in March 2015.

His best season came in 2014 with New Orleans when he had 63 catches for 931 yards and three touchdowns.

Stills is in the last year of his contract and will hit waivers first. If he clears waivers he will become a free agent.

If he is claimed on waivers a team will have to pay a prorated portion of his salary worth $6.975 million.
