Titans RB Henry runs into NFL record book with 2,000-yard season

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry ran into the NFL record book on Sunday, becoming just the eighth player in league history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a season.

Henry, who needed 223 yards on Sunday to accomplish the feat, made history with a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter against the host Houston Texans.

He had 231 rushing yards with five minutes left against the Texans, giving him his second straight rushing title as well as setting a new franchise mark.

Henry became the first player to hit 2,000 yards since Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson ran for 2,097 yards in 2012.

The Titans are the only franchise to boast two players who have hit the coveted mark, as Henry joins Chris Johnson, who ran for 2,006 yards in 2009.

Henry entered the regular-season finale with a league-leading 1,777 rushing yards, 220 more than Minnesota’s Dalvin Cook. However, Cook missed the Vikings’ regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions on Sunday to return to Florida to grieve with his family following the unexpected death of his father.

Henry’s 1,777 rushing yards entering Week 17 were 23rd most all-time for a season in league history.

Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams set the record of 2,105 in 1984.

The other four players who have rushed for 2,000 yards in a season are Buffalo’s O.J. Simpson (2,003 in 1973), Denver’s Terrell Davis (2,008 in 1998), Detroit’s Barry Sanders (2,053 in 1997) and Baltimore’s Jamal Lewis (2,066 in 2003).
