Veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick wants to play in 2021

Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick wants to continue his career next season.

The 38-year-old Fitzpatrick will be an unrestricted free agent after spending the past two seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in eight games in 2020, starting seven and throwing for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

The Dolphins replaced Fitzpatrick with Tua Tagovailoa as the starter during the season. The veteran is open to returning to Miami or heading elsewhere.

“For me personally, I have to take every offseason now and just reassess. I know these last two years have really re-lit that fire under me,” Fitzpatrick said during an interview with the Pat McAfee Show. ” I still want to play. I enjoy being out there playing. Things are a little more complicated for me now with my oldest going into high school and six little ones trailing behind him. So, there’s a lot of thought that has to go into this thing, but I still love playing the game.”

In 165 career games (146 starts), Fitzpatrick has passed for 34,977 yards, 223 touchdowns and 169 interceptions.

Fitzpatrick acknowledged that it was tough to lose his starting job, but he offered praise for Tagovailoa.

“Tua was the guy that was willing — I think that’s the first thing, guys have to be willing to ask questions and willing to learn and he did a good job with all that,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s hard to play quarterback in this league, especially as a rookie, and he came in and did a great job. … It was a great year of experience for him, and I look forward to big things in the future for him.”
