WRs coach Prince to serve as Lions’ head coach temporarily

COVID-19 protocols will keep interim head coach Darrell Bevell away from the Detroit Lions on Saturday.

The Lions are promoting Robert Prince to the head-coaching role for the Week 16 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sean Ryan, the Lions’ quarterbacks coach, will take over for Prince as the primary offensive playcaller in the game.

The Lions have been short on the coaching staff since the firing of Matt Patricia on Nov. 28. Bevell was promoted from offensive coordinator to interim head coach, and on Monday the team fired special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs.

Prince, hired by Jim Caldwell to join the Lions in 2014, has never been a head coach; Ryan has never been a playcaller.

Bevell said on Monday he was at risk of missing the game along with multiple coaches due to COVID-19 tracing. He pointed to the team’s recent travel to Nashville to play the Titans. The area is exploding with new positive cases.

“Obviously this was something that we had to plan for,” Bevell said Wednesday. “So there are contingency plans, and each and every time something happens, we’re making adjustments to that. I still think we’re gathering more information.”

The Lions also have had to make changes on the defensive side of the ball as coordinator Cory Undlin, defensive line coach Bo Davis, linebackers coach Ty McKenzie and defensive backs coach Steve Gregory remain in isolation under COVID-19 protocols.

Assistant coaches Evan Rothstein will call the plays on defense and David Corrao will serve as linebackers coach. Tony Carter will coach the defensive backs and Ty Warren will take charge of the defensive line.
