The New York Giants already announced that they will not be going away to Albany for training camp this summer.
Now, they’ve unveiled their practice plans for workouts at their team facility, adjacent to the New Meadowlands Stadium. It’s going to be nothing but night practices. And the strategy hatched by coach Tom Coughlin and the team’s leadership isn’t designed to beat the heat that’s been gripping much of the country.
Judy Battista of the New York Times explained it’s about teaching time. By practicing in the evening the team believes it will maximize the time it has to install systems on both sides of the ball. Two-a-days, at least as we know them, are a thing of the past. But teams can practice a second time for a day without pads. They’re basically glorified walk-throughs and that will be when the Giants install the playbook before going full speed at night. It also maximizes classroom time during the day.
It will be interesting to see if more teams adopt a similar schedule.
