New England Patriots veteran linebacker Jerod Mayo announced his retirement on Instagram.
He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
Mayo has battled injuries in recent seasons, including a torn pectoral last season that forced him onto injured reserve.
The Patriots will save $7 million against the salary cap with Mayo leaving, with $4.4 million in dead money remaining.
Mayo played eight seasons for New England.
He played collegiately at Tennessee.
