The St. Louis Rams released rookie wide receiver Bud Sasser due to a heart condition, cutting him with a non-football illness designation. Sasser has a genetic condition that causes thickening of the heart muscle and could affect blood flow. The sixth-round draft pick gets to keep his signing bonus, $113,737, of his four-year, $2.39 million contract.
"We did some extensive studies after the draft — very extensive, as you can imagine — and it was determined and concluded by numerous physicians that he had a pre-existing condition that we don’t feel will allow him to play," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said.
Sasser, a former Missouri standout, caught 77 passes for 1,003 yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
