Redskins RB Guice out for season with ACL injury

What was believed to be a minor or moderate injury instead is the worst-case scenario for the Washington Redskins and running back Derrius Guice.

The club announced Friday afternoon that Guice will miss the entire season after an MRI exam performed earlier in the day revealed Guice suffered an “ACL injury” in his left knee in Washington’s preseason opener against the New England Patriots on Thursday. Multiple reports stated the injury is a torn ACL.

The Redskins also announced that tight end Manasseh Garner also suffered an ACL injury.

Initial reports Thursday night and Friday morning were that the team believed Guice suffered only a sprained MCL, which would have likely meant some missed time but not the season. Before heading to the locker room Thursday, Guice had carried the ball six times for 19 yards and was seen later smiling in the locker room and saying, “All is well.”

The former LSU star was taken in the second round, 59th overall, by Washington after he slid in the draft.

In three years at LSU, Guice had 503 offensive touches for 3,324 yards (6.6-yard average) and 32 scores. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, the first running back selected this year, had 773 touches for 5,038 (6.5 average) and 51 scores over the same span.
