Sports betting election question Nov. 5

When Americans go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5 along with deciding who will go to the White House, a few states will also have sport betting questions on the ballot.

In Missouri voters will decide whether sports betting will become legal in the state. If they vote in favor of Amendment 2 it would legalize both online and in-person sports betting.

There has been a heavy, and expensive push to pass Amendment 2 from the state’s professional sports teams and major players in the sports betting industry including DraftKings and FanDuel.

The most recent polls on Amendment 2 have shown that more than 50 percent of Missouri voters are in favor of sports betting legalization, so there’s a good chance it could pass at the ballot box.

In Colorado there is also a question on sports betting on the election day ballot. Proposition JJ if passed would remove a $29 million tax cap on sports betting revenue.

The question is due to a constitutional amendment from 1992 which caps tax dollars on legislature projections. When state legislators began phasing out promo deductions in 2022 it resulted in revenue surpassing the original $29 million tax projection for the last fiscal year.

If Proposition JJ fails to pass the state would have to return $900,000 in excess tax to state sportsbooks and casinos.

Other states that the sports betting industry will be keeping an eye on during election day include Minnesota, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. All four states have previously discussed legalizing sports betting with negative results. A shakeup in the Senate or House in any of those states could lead to a different outcome on sports betting discussions or votes during future legislative sessions.
