Seven-time Pro Bowl WR A.J. Green retires

Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green retired Monday after 11 NFL seasons, nine with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Green, 34, played his last two seasons in Arizona.

Green made the announcement on his Instagram page.

“I’ve stayed true to the game and it owes me nothing,” Green posted, in part. “The next chapter begins …”

The Cardinals thanked Green in a tweet.

Green finishes his NFL career with 727 catches for 10,514 yards and 70 touchdowns. He played in 158 games (144 starts), the last 31 (19 starts) in Arizona.

The Bengals selected Green No. 4 overall out of Georgia in the 2011 draft, and he posted the first of five consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his rookie campaign. He made the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven seasons in Cincinnati. He also was a second-team All-Pro twice.

Green was hampered by injury in 2018 and missed the entire 2019 season with an ankle injury.

The Cardinals signed him to one-year deals in both 2021 and 2022.

WR A.J. Green agrees to 1-year deal with Cardinals

Wide receiver A.J. Green agreed to a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the Cardinals, who saw fellow wide receiver Christian Kirk sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency. Kirk caught 77 passes for 982 yards and five touchdowns last season with Arizona.

The Cardinals still have three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins and promising Rondale Moore as wideouts.

Green, 33, recorded 54 catches for 848 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (nine starts) last season, his first in Arizona.

A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Green has 703 receptions for 10,278 yards and 68 touchdowns in 143 career games (134 starts) with the Cincinnati Bengals and Cardinals.

The Bengals selected Green with the fourth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft out of Georgia.

Cardinals activate A.J. Green from COVID list

The Arizona Cardinals activated veteran wide receiver A.J. Green from the reserve/COVID-19 list before practice on Thursday.

Tight end Demetrius Harris was lifted from the list Wednesday.

Green’s return is key for the Cardinals since it’s unclear whether fellow wideout DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring) will be able to play on Sunday. The status of quarterback Kyler Murray (ankle) also is unclear. According to reports, neither was at practice Thursday.

A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Green has 29 catches for 456 yards and three touchdowns in his first season in Arizona after nine with the Cincinnati Bengals. In 135 career games, he is closing in on 10,000 receiving yards — he has 9,886 — with 68 touchdowns.

Green, 33, missed last weekend’s win over the San Francisco 49ers.

Also Thursday, the Cardinals put long snapper Aaron Brewer (broken arm) and tight end David Wells (hand) on injured reserve.

The Cardinals (8-1) host the Carolina Panthers (4-5) on Sunday.

Larry Fitzgerald on NFL future: ‘I haven’t decided anything’

Unrestricted free agent wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald said he has yet to make up his mind if another season in the NFL is on his horizon.

“I haven’t decided anything,” Fitzgerald said Friday in an interview with ESPN. “Training camp starts in a few weeks. I’m excited, it’s going to be another great year for the NFL.”

Fitzgerald’s former team, the Arizona Cardinals, have bolstered their wide receiver corps by selecting Purdue’s Rondale Moore in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They also signed seven-time Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Green in March.

Fitzgerald, 37, has spent his entire NFL career with the Cardinals, who selected him with the third overall pick of the 2004 draft.

He is an All-Pro, an 11-time Pro Bowl selection and the winner of the 2016 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Fitzgerald is second all-time in the NFL in receiving yards list (17,492) and receptions (1,432) behind Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice. He is the leader in touchdown receptions (121) among active players and sixth all-time. He has played in 263 games for the Cardinals.

Fitzgerald had 54 receptions for 409 yards and one touchdown in 13 games last season.

The Arizona Cardinals have finalized a deal with longtime Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.

The seven-time Pro Bowl selection’s deal is worth up to $8.5 million with $6 million guaranteed, per ESPN.

Injuries have plagued Green, who played in 16 games (14 starts) last season after missing the entire 2019 season with an ankle injury. Green played in just nine games in 2018 with a nagging toe injury.

Green made $18.2 million under the franchise tag last season in Cincy.

Green, 32, struggled to regain his form last season after making the Pro Bowl in his first seven seasons in Cincinnati. He had 47 catches for 523 yards with two touchdowns in 2020. His best year came in 2013 when he notched career-highs in catches (98) and yards (1,426). He caught 11 touchdowns that season, matching his total from 2012.

For his career, Green has 649 receptions for 9,430 yards and 65 TDs, No. 2 in each category all-time in Bengals history behind Chad Johnson.

The Bengals selected Green No. 4 overall in the 2011 draft out of Georgia.

Struggling WR Green wants to remain with Bengals

Seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Green has spent his entire NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Green, 32, said Thursday he’d like to remain with the club as opposed to be swapped prior to the trade deadline on Nov. 3.

“I think we’re building something special here and I just want to be a part of the team and help us win,” Green said of the Bengals (1-3-1), who visit the Indianapolis Colts (3-2) on Sunday.

Green has struggled in his return from missing all of last season due to an ankle injury. He has 14 receptions for 119 yards in five games, including one catch for three yards over his last two.

By comparison, Tyler Boyd leads the team in receptions (32) and receiving yards (362) while rookie Tee Higgins has a club-best two touchdown catches. Higgins also has 16 receptions for 214 yards.

Green has 616 receptions for 9,026 yards with 63 touchdowns in 116 career games since the Bengals selected him with the fourth overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. His touchdown total is four shy of Chad Johnson’s franchise mark.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle D.J. Reader was carted off the field in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens due to a left knee injury.

Reader, who recorded one tackle, was later ruled out for the contest.

The fifth-year-pro is in his first season with the Bengals after spending his first four with the Houston Texans.

Also, longtime Cincinnati wideout A.J. Green suffered a hamstring injury and was declared doubtful to return. The 10-year veteran didn’t have a catch and was targeted once before departing.
