Report: Packers TE Tyler Davis tears ACL

Green Bay Packers tight end Tyler Davis tore an anterior cruciate ligament in Friday night’s preseason opener, NFL Network reported Saturday.

Davis made two receptions for nine yards against the Cincinnati Bengals, the first one for a 5-yard score in the second quarter. The injury reportedly occurred on his second reception, when Davis got up limping.

He was carted to the locker room after trainers looked at the knee.

Davis, 26, was a sixth-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft. He played eight games for the Jaguars in 2020, then signed with the Packers in 2021.

In 31 games (one start) in Green Bay, he’s caught eight passes for 61 yards. While he has played just 17 percent of the team’s offensive snaps, he’s been a key contributor on special teams, taking part in 81 percent of snaps.

Even without an official diagnosis after the game, Packers coach Matt LaFleur knew the injury was severe.

“Whether it’s on teams or carving out a role on our offense, he’s the consummate professional. Great teammate, great human,” LaFleur said.

“We’re going to miss him.”

Rookie Luke Musgrave is listed as the starter at tight end on the depth chart. Tucker Kraft and Austin Allen now will fight for Davis’ No. 2 tight end spot.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Rashan Gary came off the physically unable to perform list on Monday, nine months after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament.

“He’ll be out there,” said LaFleur before Monday’s practice. “It’s going to be more or less, mostly individual (drills). Maybe some of the walk-through/jog-through, but he’s not going to be in any team.”

Even though he isn’t ready for full-team practices, it’s a major step forward for the Packers.

It was Gary’s first practice since suffering the ACL tear in a loss to the Detroit Lions Nov. 6. His 2022 season ended after nine games, and he recorded 32 tackles (seven for loss) along with 12 quarterback hits, six sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Gary, 25, was the Packers’ first-round draft pick (No. 12 overall) in 2019.

The Michigan product has 22.5 sacks and 135 tackles in 56 games (29 starts).

Broncos RB Javonte Williams to play in preseason

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton saw enough in two days of padded practice to commit to playing running back Javonte Williams in preseason games.

Payton said the lead running back in Denver would play at least by the second game of the preseason after dominant stretches of practice the past two days.

Williams is returning from a season-ending ACL tear, but the final hurdle for him came in this week’s contact practices.

“He’ll get reps. It may be we wait until Week 2 (of the preseason). But I like how he’s progressed,” Payton said.

Williams had 47 carries and 16 receptions in four games when his season ended Oct. 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders. He has 250 career carries in his two seasons for 1,107 yards and four touchdowns.

Payton also confirmed linebacker Jonas Griffith tore his ACL during special teams drills earlier this week in a “fluke” play. He was placed on injured reserve. To fill the roster spot, the Broncos signed linebacker Austin Ajiake.

Bills’ Von Miller eyes season opener for return from ACL injury

Buffalo Bills pass rusher Von Miller said he expects to play in the season opener on Sept. 11, approximately 10 1/2 months removed from sustaining a torn right ACL.

“You know I love guarantees,” Miller said Thursday, via Channel 9NEWS in Denver. “It’s me, it’s Von. I love guarantees. I want to play. In 2013, I had (ACL) surgery in January and I played at the beginning of August in the preseason. So that put me around seven months, eight months.

“And 10 years removed from that, 2023, I have a whole new outlook. I know exactly where I’m supposed to be at two months, four months, six months and in the position where I’m at now. I feel great, I feel comfortable. I feel like I’ll be ready to go at the start of the season.”

Still, despite his confidence, he hedged a bit.

Miller, 34, is well aware of who he might be facing in the season opener, provided he is able to get back on the field.

“I trust our GM, I trust our athletic trainers, I trust our team, our owners. Whenever it’s time for me to play, I’ll be ready to go,” Miller said. “I want to be ready (for) Week 1 versus the Jets. Aaron Rodgers, ‘Monday Night Football.’

“But at the same time I’m not in control of that. I’m going to do everything I can physically, mentally, emotionally to be ready for that. But if it’s not the first week of the season, then it won’t be any longer than Week 6, for sure.”

Miller recorded eight sacks and 21 tackles while forcing one fumble in 11 games (all starts) last season, his first since signing a six-year, $120 million contract.

The eight-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time All-Pro has totaled 123.5 sacks, 561 tackles, 27 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries in 161 career games (all starts) with the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams and Bills.

He was part of Super Bowl-winning teams in both Denver and Los Angeles.

49ers DB Dontae Johnson (ACL) out for season

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Dontae Johnson will miss the remainder of season because of a torn ACL, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

Johnson sustained the injury while playing on special teams during the 49ers’ 35-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. He was playing in just his second game this season after residing on the practice squad.

Johnson, 31, has recorded 214 career tackles, two interceptions and four fumble recoveries in 105 games (28 starts) with the 49ers (2014-17, 2019-22), Buffalo Bills (2018) and Los Angeles Chargers (2019).

Cardinals TE Zach Ertz had surgery to repair ACL, MCL

Arizona Cardinals tight end Zach Ertz said Thursday that he underwent surgery to repair both his ACL and his MCL after suffering a season-ending left knee injury last month.

“We didn’t think the ACL was involved early on,” Ertz told reporters at a press conference where he accepted the Cardinals’ Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

“And then it just was partially torn and it wouldn’t have lasted long-term, so we had to get in and get both done. I’m glad it’s behind me now.”

Ertz said his goal is to be ready for Week 1 of the 2023 season but is only in the beginning stages of his rehab process.

Ertz, 32, was carted off the field Nov. 13 during a 27-17 win over the Los Angeles Rams. NFL Network reported at the time that he had suffered a season-ending knee injury.

The veteran tight end was in his first full season with the Cardinals after spending the bulk of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles traded him to Arizona before the deadline in 2021.

Ertz had 47 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in 10 games, all starts, in 2022. In 10 NFL campaigns he has caught 682 passes for 7,247 yards and 45 touchdowns. He was a Pro Bowler for three straight seasons in 2017-19.

Commanders activate DE Chase Young from PUP to 53-man roster

The Washington Commanders activated defensive end Chase Young from the physically unable to perform list on Monday.

The return of the former No. 2 overall draft pick has been in the works for some time. Young has not played in more than a year — since injuring his right knee (torn ACL and MCL) on Nov. 14, 2021.

Young was designated to return to practice on Nov. 2, opening a 21-day window for his return to the active roster. There were hopes he would be able to play in Week 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles or Week 11 against the Houston Texans, but the Commanders held off before adding him to the 53-man roster.

Wednesday would have marked the end of the 21-day window, after which Young would have had to move onto season-ending injured reserve.

Coach Ron Rivera did not go as far as to say that Young will play Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

“We will work him with the intent that he’s ready to play,” Rivera said. “If he’s not, then we’ll wait another week. He’s ready to go as far as being activated.”

Rivera said the most important thing is to see Young consistently and confidently “cut it loose” during practice.

“We want to make sure he’s confident, no hesitation,” Rivera said. “… You start to see it, especially when he’s not thinking about it. I watch it very closely and every now and then check to make sure it’s fine. We want to make sure because the last thing we want is for him to get back out there and hurt it again.”

Young recorded nine sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and 70 total tackles in 24 career games (all starts) over his first two seasons. He was the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year after putting up 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three recoveries.

The Commanders (6-5) are coming off back-to-back wins against the Eagles and Texans and are in the thick of the NFC playoff race entering Sunday’s home game against the Falcons (5-6).

Reports: 49ers CB Emmanuel Moseley (ACL) out for season

An MRI confirmed that San Francisco 49ers cornerback Emmanuel Moseley suffered a torn ACL and he will miss the rest of the season, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Moseley returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter of Sunday’s 37-15 victory against the Carolina Panthers.

He sustained a knee injury in the fourth quarter and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team feared the worst.

“It was tough at the end,” Shanahan told reporters after the game in Charlotte. “It was a weird feeling watching E-man. It definitely took away a little from the excitement.”

Moseley, 26, started the first five games this season and registered 21 tackles, five passes defensed and a pick. He has 161 tackles and four interceptions in 45 games (33 starts) since joining the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

San Francisco safety Jimmie Ward suffered a broken hand in the game. Defensive end Nick Bosa (groin) and kicker Robbie Gould (knee) also sustained injuries and will have further tests Monday.

Giants WR Sterling Shepard tears ACL, out for season

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard tore his left ACL in Monday night’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys and will miss the rest of the season, head coach Brian Daboll confirmed Tuesday.

The non-contact injury occurred during New York’s final offensive play of the game. Shepard was running a pattern straight down the field and suddenly pulled up and grabbed at his left knee. He fell to the ground and was treated by the training staff before leaving on the cart.

Shepard had five receptions for 49 yards in the 23-16 loss. In three games this season, he had 13 catches for a team-leading 154 yards and one touchdown.

Shepard saw his 2021 season end when he tore his left Achilles in a game against Dallas on Dec. 19.

The 29-year-old has 362 catches for 4,038 yards and 22 touchdowns in 75 games (72 starts) over seven NFL seasons, all with New York.

Browns lose DE Chris Odom, USFL star, to torn ACL

Cleveland Browns defensive end Chris Odom sustained a season-ending ACL injury in Saturday’s preseason finale against the Chicago Bears, coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Sunday.

The Browns signed Odom on Aug. 5 following an outstanding season with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.

He was the 2022 USFL Defensive Player of the Year with 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles and four blocked kicks.

Odom, 27, previously played in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers (2017) and Washington (2019). He registered 16 tackles, two sacks and one forced fumble in 11 games.
