Giants RB Saquon Barkley to open camp on PUP list

Saquon Barkley will open New York Giants training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab from a torn ACL.

Barkley was one of six players the Giants placed on the active/PUP list Thursday. The team’s first full-squad training camp practice is next Wednesday.

Barkley tore the ACL last September during Week 2 of the 2020 season. He told the New York Post this week he didn’t know when he would be medically cleared to return to practice.

“Yeah, I’ve been asked a lot,” Barkley said. “I guess that’s the theme of the summer, going to be when I’ll be back. But no, I don’t have that answer, to be honest. … It’s a fun process, but it’s a tough process at the same time. Just have to continue to listen to my body, listen to my trainers, listen to the coaches and take it day-by-day.”

The No. 2 overall draft pick in 2018, Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year that season but has struggled to stay healthy since. In 31 games over three seasons, Barkley has amassed 2,344 rushing yards for 17 touchdowns on 4.7 yards per attempt, plus 149 receptions for 1,219 yards and six scores.

New York picked up Barkley’s fifth-year option for the 2022 season, guaranteeing him $7.217 million.

Newly-signed tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot), third-round draft pick and cornerback Aaron Robinson (core muscle), center Jonotthan Harrison (hamstring), tackle Matt Peart (back) and linebacker Oshane Ximines (hamstring) were also placed on the active/PUP list.

In addition, first-round wide receiver Kadarius Toney was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list because of a positive test. The rookie was the Giants’ No. 20 overall pick in April’s draft.

Giants’ Judge: Saquon Barkley attacking return; no timetable

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley continues to recover from a torn ACL he suffered last September, and coach Joe Judge likes where Barkley stands in the process.

Judge declined to provide a timetable for Barkley’s return to action, but his overall reviews of Barkley’s rehab were positive.

“He comes in every day, he attacks every day from a rehab standpoint,” Judge said. “He’s had a phenomenal attitude and great motivation; he’s been tremendously positive.”

Judge added that the Giants are taking pains to facilitate Barkley’s rehab at “the correct rate for his individual body and injury,” but that he “couldn’t be happier” with how Barkley is approaching the rehab.

Barkley, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2018, saw his third NFL season cut short after tearing his ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 season against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 31 career games, Barkley has gained 2,344 yards on 4.7 yards per carry with 17 rushing touchdowns and six receiving scores.

Quarterback Daniel Jones added that Barkley is doing all he can to be ready for Week 1 of the 2021 season.

“That’s the type of person he is and the type of worker he is,” Jones said. “Certainly, we’ve got his back and (are) supporting him and I know he’s working his tail off, everything he can do and doing what the trainers are asking him to do. He’s had that mindset since … he went down and it’s been fun to watch him work.”

Eagles S McLeod out for season with torn ACL

Philadelphia Eagles safety Rodney McLeod will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL sustained in Sunday’s upset of the New Orleans Saints.

Head coach Doug Pederson confirmed the extent of McLeod’s knee injury on Monday.

McLeod, 30, started all 13 games this season. He leads the team with seven passes defensed, ranks second with 66 tackles, and has one interception and two fumble recoveries, including one for a touchdown.

Undrafted out of Virginia, McLeod has collected 535 tackles, 14 interceptions, 11 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries in 126 games (110 starts) with the then-St. Louis Rams (2012-15) and Eagles.

McLeod, who missed most of the 2018 season with a knee injury, is signed for next season with a guaranteed base salary of $3.75 million.

Giants RB Barkley: ‘No doubt’ about full recovery

Running back Saquon Barkley said his goal is to get “one percent better” every day as he rehabilitates from a knee injury that ended his season with the New York Giants on Sept. 20.

In his first news conference since the injury, Barkley said Thursday that he has “no doubt” he will return to form next season for the Giants. He tore his right anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus and strained his medial collaterate ligament.

He had surgery on Oct. 30, and the delay allowed the MCL to heal.

“The likelihood of me coming back to 100 percent, what they’re saying is it’s kind of all on how you attack it,” Barkley, 23, said. “You have to be smart with the first six or seven weeks, obviously because of the meniscus repair. I’m continuing to be smart with it. At the end of the day, they say when you do a ACL reconstruction, the ACL becomes ten times stronger.”

The Giants took Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he had a stellar rookie season that culminated in a Pro Bowl selection. He led the NFL with 2,208 yards from scrimmage and chipped in 15 touchdowns.

Limited to 13 games last season because of a high-ankle sprain, he ran for 1,003 yards and added 438 receiving yards, scoring eight touchdowns.

“I’m just going to continue to attack every day, continue to put my body in shape for however long I continue to play for to have a successful season. Hopefully it works out for me that way,” Barkley said. “I had an injury last year, I was able to overcome that and I had an injury this year. This is another challenge in the way that I have to be ready to face.”

Barkley said the days after this season’s injury included some “dark places” but things have been brightened by watching his teammates lately. After a 1-7 start, the Giants are 4-7 and tied with the Washington Football Team for first place in the NFC East.

“When we win, you still feel that joy even though I’m not on the field. It’s also that sitting on the couch watching and you feel helpless. You can’t do anything, you can’t help your team at all,” he said. “I would say Sundays are the toughest days, but the last three weeks they have been pretty good.”

The Giants will face a tough test on the road Sunday when they meet the NFC West-leading Seattle Seahawks (8-3).

Report: Steelers LB Dupree has torn ACL

An MRI confirmed that Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament in the team’s win over the Baltimore Ravens, NFL Network reported Thursday.

He will miss the rest of the season.

The noncontact injury occurred in the second half of Wednesday afternoon’s game in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers used their franchise tag this season on Dupree, who is earning $15.8 million. He becomes the second Pittsburgh linebacker to be lost to a torn ACL, following Devin Bush, who suffered the injury on Oct. 18 in a game against the Cleveland Browns.

Dupree, 27, emerged as a pass-rushing force last season with 11 1/2 sacks, and he had eight this season. He had two tackles for loss but no sacks on Wednesday.

The Kentucky product is in his sixth season, all with the Steelers, after he was drafted in the first round (22nd overall) in 2015.

In 81 games, 66 starts, he has 39 1/2 sacks, 231 tackles, 54 tackles for loss. He also has one interception, which he brought back for a touchdown in 2018, eight forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

The Steelers (11-0) are scheduled to host the Washington Football Team on Monday.

Reports: Burrow tore ACL, MCL, needs reconstructive surgery

An MRI on the left knee of No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow revealed the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback will require reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL and other structural damage, multiple outlets reported Monday.

A surgery date is scheduled, pending reduced swelling in Burrow’s knee, per the reports.

Burrow was carted off the field after the injury early in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Washington Football Team. He went down after getting hit below the waist while another defender hit him high from the opposite side on a throw.

With the game still in progress, Burrow tweeted: “Thanks for all the love. Can’t get rid of me that easy. See ya next year.”

Burrow completed 22 of 34 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown for Cincinnati (2-7-1) before his injury. He did not take a sack.

Ryan Finley replaced Burrow for the Bengals, but Cincinnati faded after the injury. Finley finished 3-of-10 for 30 yards and an interception. The Bengals finished with 272 total yards, amassing just 17 yards on five possessions after the injury. Finley was sacked four times.

Titans LT Lewan confirms torn ACL, out for season

An MRI on Monday confirmed that Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Lewan, 29, left during the third quarter of the unbeaten Titans’ 42-36 overtime win against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

“Don’t feel sorry for me, I’m going to handle this rehab like a Pro and come back better than ever,” Lewan posted Monday on Twitter.

“I can’t wait to watch my guys crush it, I’m going to be the biggest titans fan each and every Sunday,” Lewan continued on Twitter. “We are doing something special here and this small set back doesn’t change a thing!”

Lewan, a first-round pick of the Titans (No. 11 overall) in 2014, is a three-time Pro Bowl selection. He has started 85 of his 90 games with Tennessee.

Ty Sambrailo, 28, who signed a one-year deal with the Titans in the offseason, replaced Lewan on Sunday.

Other options on the line include moving right tackle Dennis Kelly to the left side or putting rookie first-rounder Isaiah Wilson in the mix. Wilson has not played this season but recently returned to practice after originally being placed on the NFL reserve/COVID-19 list in July.

Report: Steelers LB Bush sustains torn ACL vs. Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers starting inside linebacker Devin Bush will require season-ending surgery after sustaining a torn ACL during the team’s 38-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, ESPN reported.

Bush, 22, injured his left knee in the second quarter after administering a hit on Browns running back D’Ernest Johnson on an incomplete pass. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin termed Bush’s injury as “significant” in his postgame press conference.

Linebacker Robert Spillane replaced Bush, who had played every single defensive snap for the Steelers this season.

Bush has 26 tackles and one sack in five games this season after collecting 109 with four fumble recoveries and two interceptions last year. He was selected by Pittsburgh with the 10th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Boston College WR White (ACL) out for season

Boston College wide receiver Kobay White had ACL surgery Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season.

White, who had a team-high 29 catches for 469 yards and five touchdowns in 2019, did not participate in the Eagles’ season-opening 26-6 win at Duke on Saturday.

“Kobay had surgery on his ACL yesterday so he will be out for the year,” head coach Jeff Hafley said Wednesday. “I didn’t want to say anything, I wanted him to have his surgery and clear his head and not have to read about it all over the media.

“So, out of respect for him I wanted to make sure everything went OK and everything did go OK and he’s on to recovery. We’ll miss him. He’s not only a great player but a great leader and he’ll be back.”

A graduate student with one year of eligibility remaining, White has 96 career receptions for 1,409 yards and 10 touchdowns in 38 games for Boston College.

Giants confirm torn ACL for RB Barkley

The New York Giants on Monday said running back Saquon Barkley has a torn right ACL. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The two-time 1,000-yard rusher and 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year underwent an MRI Monday morning at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. He will undergo surgery “in the near future,” the team said in a release.

Barkley, 23, was carried off the field following a run on the first play of the second quarter of the Giants’ 17-13 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday.

He was hurt while running toward the sideline and getting tackled by Bears safety Eddie Jackson. Barkley grabbed at the knee as he was taken to the ground.

Barkley will end the season with 19 carries for 34 yards and six catches for 60 in two games with the Giants (0-2). He did not score any touchdowns.

Barkley rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns as a 2018 rookie after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft out of Penn State. He rushed for 1,003 yards last season despite missing three games and being limited in several others due to a high ankle sprain.

Veteran Dion Lewis is the next man up for the Giants. He carried 10 times for 20 yards and a touchdown and added four catches for 36 yards against the Bears.

Lewis, who turns 30 this Sunday, signed a one-year deal with New York in March after seven seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2011-12), New England Patriots (2015-17) and Tennessee Titans (2018-19).

His best season was with the Patriots in 2017 when he rushed for 896 yards and six touchdowns and hauled in 32 catches for 214 yards and three scores. He won a Super Bowl LI ring with New England.

The Giants host the San Francisco 49ers (1-1) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
