Report: Panthers signing RB AJ Dillon to one-year deal

The Carolina Panthers are signing running back AJ Dillon to a one-year deal, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported on Wednesday.

Dillon, 27, spent last season with the Philadelphia Eagles after sitting out the 2024 campaign with a neck injury.

He replaces Rico Dowdle, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and joins a Carolina depth chart led by Chuba Hubbard and Jonathan Brooks.

Dillon appeared in only seven games for the Eagles, carrying 12 times for 60 yards and catching three passes for 21 yards.

A second-round pick by Green Bay in 2020, Dillon rushed for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns in 60 games with the Packers from 2020-23. He added 86 receptions for 763 yards and two scores.

Reports: Eagles sign RB AJ Dillon to 1-year deal

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent running back AJ Dillon, who missed the entire 2024 season with a neck injury, according to reports from NFL Network and the Associated Press.

It’s a one-year deal for Dillon, though financial terms were not reported.

The 6-foot, 247-pound back gives the Eagles a power rusher behind star RB Saquon Barkley.

Dillon, 26, has rushed for 2,428 yards and 16 touchdowns in 60 career games (11 starts) with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2020 draft. He also has 86 receptions out of the backfield for 763 yards and two scores.

Dillon sat out last season with a neck stinger. He also finished the 2023 season on injured reserve with the same injury that forced him to miss the final two games.

Dillon has received clearances from the top neck specialists in the country, per NFL Network.

Packers RB AJ Dillon could play with broken thumb

Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon did not practice on Thursday as he gauges whether he can play with a broken right thumb.

Dillon said he suffered the injury on the final drive of the Packers’ loss to the New York Giants on Monday night.

“Got hit with a helmet lined up the right way,” Dillon told reporters. “Hit just right enough. And then we called another run play after that.”

Asked if a running back playing with a broken thumb would have a negative impact on ball security, Dillon said, “That’s a great question. Something I’m trying to figure out.”

Dillon took 15 carries for 53 yards and caught two passes for another 25 yards in the 24-22 defeat. He has served as Green Bay’s No. 1 running back since Aaron Jones sustained a knee injury Nov. 19 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Jones, who has since returned to practice, said Thursday he is “feeling a lot better” and confident he’ll be able to play Sunday against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

If neither Dillon nor Jones can go, Patrick Taylor rises to RB1.

Dillon has carried the ball 164 times for 574 yards and one touchdown over 13 games (six starts) this season. He’s added 22 receptions for 223 yards. He has 2,389 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns (15 rushing, two receiving) in four seasons as Jones’ backup in Green Bay.

The Packers also expect wide receiver Christian Watson (hamstring) to miss his second straight game. Watson missed practice Thursday.

Green Bay police chief apologizes to Packers’ AJ Dillon over encounter

The police chief in Green Bay apologized to Packers running back AJ Dillon for the actions of one of his officers during an exhibition soccer match at Lambeau Field in July.

The department conducted an investigation into the events surrounding the officer’s shove of Dillon and Chris Davis, the police chief, said it revealed two violations of department policy. He said “appropriate corrective action” would be taken but didn’t go into other detail, citing the confidentiality of personnel matters.

“I apologize to Mr. Dillon for the way he was treated,” Davis said in a prepared statement. “We appreciate the strong relationship we have with the Packers organization, and the GBPD remains committed to working with them along with the entire Green Bay community to provide the best and most professional police service possible.”

The incident in question took place at a friendly between Manchester City and Bayern Munich, the first soccer match in Lambeau Field’s history.

Video surfaced on social media showing Dillon on the field trying to perform a Lambeau Leap to entertain the crowd during a weather delay.

A police officer interfered, first grabbing him by the back of his collar to stop him from jumping and then shoving Dillon aggressively as the running back offered an explanation.

“Two security told me and helped me come down to the field during the 30 minute rain delay, so I could do a lambeau leap and hype up the crowd… I’m assuming (the officer) missed them telling me to come down,” Dillon wrote on Twitter in the aftermath of the incident.

“Just miscommunication between parties, the @GBPolice are great people and I’m glad we have them down there for our games to keep us safe. Standing there in the pouring rain with all those people it’s hard to know what’s going on with just one. All good.”

Dillon, 24, is in his third season with the Packers, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In 30 career games, he has 1,537 yards from scrimmage and 10 total touchdowns.
