Reports: Bucs DT Akiem Hicks (foot) out for month

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are dealing with yet another injury, this one to veteran defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who could miss one month after sustaining a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, ESPN and the Tampa Bay Times reported Tuesday.

A source told ESPN that Hicks was injured in the second quarter of the Buccaneers’ road win against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday while being double-teamed, paving the way for a strip sack by teammate Shaquil Barrett.

In two games this season, Hicks has five tackles without a sack. He owns 40.5 career sacks, 392 tackles and 73 tackles for loss in 140 games (112 starts).

Hicks, 32, signed with Tampa Bay at the beginning of June after 10 NFL seasons with the Saints (2012-15), New England Patriots (2015) and Chicago Bears (2016-21). He earned his lone Pro Bowl selection in the 2018 season.

Logan Hall, the 33rd overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, is expected to see more time while Hicks is sidelined.

Bucs officially sign veteran DL Akiem Hicks

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed the signing of veteran defensive lineman Akiem Hicks on Wednesday.

Terms were not disclosed but multiple reports Tuesday said it was a one-year deal worth up to $10 million.

The former Chicago Bears starter joins a defensive line that includes 2021 Pro Bowl selection Vita Vea and Logan Hall, the 33rd overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. Hicks’ signing likely means the Bucs will not re-sign free agent Ndamukong Suh.

Hicks, 32, was a third-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2012. He spent his first three seasons with New Orleans, split the 2015 campaign between the Saints and New England Patriots, then signed as a free agent with Chicago before the 2016 season.

In his six years with the Bears, Hicks started 77 games and was credited with 31 sacks, including 3.5 in nine games last season when he dealt with COVID-19 and ankle and groin injuries. In 138 career games (110 starts), Hicks has 40.5 sacks, 387 tackles (73 for loss), six forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.

Reports: Buccaneers to sign free-agent DL Akiem Hicks

Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Akiem Hicks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $10 million according to multiple reports Tuesday.

Bears rule out Akiem Hicks, Justin Fields for Thanksgiving game

The Chicago Bears on Wednesday officially ruled out starting quarterback Justin Fields, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks and running back Damien Williams for Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Further, wide receiver Allen Robinson (hamstring) is doubtful for the Thanksgiving Day game.

Nick Foles will back up Andy Dalton, who was named the Bears’ starter Tuesday. Rookie Khalil Herbert will back up starting RB David Montgomery with Williams out with a calf injury.

Fields suffered a rib injury in last Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Sitting out the Thanksgiving Day game will give him another 10 days to recover before Chicago’s Dec. 5 date with the Arizona Cardinals.

Hicks also missed the game against the Ravens with an injured ankle. It’ll be his fourth missed game this season.

It could also be the second consecutive missed game for Robinson, who has 30 catches for 339 yards and a touchdown on the season.

The Bears (3-7) are riding a five-game losing streak while the Lions remain winless.
