Ravens QB Tyler Huntley signs RFA tender

The Baltimore Ravens now have two quarterbacks under contract for 2023, neither one named Lamar Jackson.

Tyler Huntley signed his one-year, restricted free agent tender worth $2.627 million on Monday. He joins Anthony Brown as one of two QBs the Ravens have in the fold.

The Ravens and Jackson remain in a stalemate. The Ravens placed the franchise tag on Jackson, who has said he won’t sign it and instead wants to be traded.

The Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson on March 7, five days after he says he requested the trade. The sides failed to reach agreement on a new contract despite negotiations that have lasted more than a year.

Jackson has until July 17 to sign the tender, or sign a long-term deal with the club, with the latter appearing unlikely now.

Until he signs the $32.41 million tender, Jackson is free to meet with other teams and agree to a long-term deal with one of them. The Ravens, by using the franchise tag, have refusal rights and can match any offer sheet Jackson receives. If the Ravens choose not to match a contract offer, they would command two first-round picks in exchange for Jackson.

If Jackson doesn’t find a suitor and if the Ravens refuse to trade him, Jackson will be forced to play on the tender or sit out the 2023 season.

Huntley appeared in six games (four starts) for the Ravens in 2022, throwing for 658 yards and two touchdowns against three interceptions, earning is first Pro Bowl nod.

He’s 3-5 as a starter across three seasons in Baltimore.

Reports: Ravens to play both Tyler Huntley, Anthony Brown

With an injured Lamar Jackson out, the Baltimore Ravens reportedly plan to use both backup quarterbacks during Sunday night’s AFC wild-card game against the host Cincinnati Bengals.

Multiple reports said the Ravens will deploy the unusual strategy with Tyler Huntley and Anthony Brown, despite challenges with each.

Huntley, 24, is dealing with tendinitis in his right shoulder as well as a wrist injury. He was listed as questionable on the official injury report.

As a starter in his career, Huntley is 3-5. His injured shoulder hampered his performance this season, with Huntley completing just three passes of at least 20 yards in four starts.

When asked at Friday’s practice if he’s ready to return to the field, Huntley reported he has “no nerves.”

“Just excited to get back out there after missing one week,” Huntley said. “It’s a privilege to go out there and play football and I appreciate it.”

Meanwhile, the Ravens’ other backup quarterback, Brown, 24, is an undrafted rookie who’s made only one career start, last Sunday’s 27-16 loss to the Bengals. In that game, he threw for 286 yards with two interceptions and a fumble.

The two QBs have different strengths, with Brown the better passer while Huntley is more proficient at using the same run-oriented offense as Jackson.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has been tight-lipped about the situation, declining to name a starter after Friday’s practice.

“We’ll see when the time comes,” Harbaugh said.

Jackson, who was ruled out for a sixth straight game with a left knee injury, “suffered a PCL Grade 2 sprain, on the borderline of a strain 3” and his knee “remains unstable,” according to Jackson’s own tweet on Thursday.

The Ravens enter Sunday night’s matchup against the defending AFC champion Bengals as a heavy underdog.

Ravens rookie Anthony Brown to start at QB

Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Anthony Brown will make his first career start on Sunday against the host Cincinnati Bengals, with the team making Tyler Huntley inactive.

Huntley started the past four games with Lamar Jackson continuing to deal with a lingering injury.

NFL Network reported that the Ravens are sitting Huntley to give his shoulder and wrist injuries time to recover for the wild-card round of the playoffs next weekend, just in case Jackson can’t return.

Veteran Brett Hundley will back up Brown.

The Ravens (10-6) have clinched a playoff spot but have something on the line against the Bengals (11-4). Should both the Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers win, the NFL will conduct a coin flip to determine whether the Ravens or Bengals will host a wild-card game between the two teams. The NFL owners approved the unique solution because the Bengals won’t play a full 17-game season.

The game between the Bengals and Bills was canceled on Monday following the serious medical situation involving Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest on the field.

He continues to recover in a Cincinnati hospital.

Brown, 24, played in Week 14 against the Pittsburgh Steelers after Huntley sustained a concussion. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 16 yards. As a runner, he carried the ball three times and lost 5 yards.

He is an undrafted rookie free agent. He played three seasons at Boston College and then two at Oregon. In 2021, he threw for 2,989 yards, ran for 658 yards and registered a combined 28 touchdowns for the Ducks.

Cowboys CB Anthony Brown out for rest of season

Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Anthony Brown ruptured his Achilles in Sunday’s game and is out for the rest of the season.

Brown, 28, was injured in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 54-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night. The seven-year veteran had three tackles and one pass defensed before exiting.

On the good news front, eight-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith will return to practice this week.

Brown, who started all 12 games for Dallas this season, had 42 tackles and seven passes defensed. He has nine career interceptions in 94 games (69 starts), all for the Cowboys.

“I’m sick for him,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said Sunday after the game. “He’s had an outstanding career. Boy, he’s brought it up by the boot strap, and he, to me, is what a young player working hard, really having the right stuff, can become who’s not a No. 1 draft pick. I’m sick for him and sick for us.”

The Cowboys selected Brown in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.

Smith suffered an avulsion fracture of his left knee — the hamstring tendon behind the knee separated from the bone — in August and required surgery. The team originally hoped to have him back by Thanksgiving.

Smith, 31, is a two-time All-Pro. In 11 seasons with the Cowboys, he has started all 144 games he has played. Neck surgery cost him all but two games in 2020, and ankle injuries and time on the COVID list limited him to 11 games last year.

Cowboys’ Tyron Smith, Anthony Brown test positive for virus

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith and cornerback Anthony Brown tested positive for COVID-19, coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday.

The two players join rookie linebacker Micah Parsons in dealing with the virus. Parsons was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday by the Cowboys (11-5), with McCarthy declaring him out for Sunday’s road game against the Eagles (9-7).

McCarthy also said Thursday the team has “a number of guys that are sick” but have not tested positive for COVID-19.

Smith, 31, has started all 11 games in which he has appeared this season and all 144 over his 11-year career with the Cowboys. The eight-time Pro Bowl selection likely will be replaced at left tackle by Terence Steele, who has played in 15 games (12 starts) this season.

Brown, 28, has 71 tackles, three interceptions and one forced fumble in 16 games (all starts) this season. His spot could be manned by Kelvin Joseph, who started recently in place of Jourdan Lewis during the latter’s time on the COVID-19 list.

Cowboys CB Brown (rib) placed on injured reserve

Dallas Cowboys starting cornerback Anthony Brown has been placed on injured reserve with an ailing rib, the team announced Saturday.

Brown initially sustained the injury during the Cowboys’ 20-17 season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.

Brown participated in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday before being listed as questionable on the injury report Friday. The move to injured reserve will prevent him from playing in at least the next three games,

Brown is the latest member of the Cowboys to sustain an injury in the season opener, joining tight end Blake Jarwin (torn ACL) and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (fractured clavicle).

Brown, 26, recorded six tackles in the Week 1 loss. He has collected 178 tackles, four interceptions, three forced fumbles and three sacks in 57 career games (34 starts) since being selected by the Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Also on Saturday, the Cowboys promoted tackle Eric Smith from the practice squad. Smith will provide depth for Dallas, which is without starting right tackle La’el Collins and swing tackle Cam Erving — both are on injured reserve.

Left tackle Tyron Smith is considered a game-time decision for Sunday’s home opener against the Atlanta Falcons (0-1) with a neck injury.
