Nebraska TE Arik Gilbert arrested for second time in three weeks

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested for a second time in a three-week span on Friday, this time in Lumpkin County, Ga.

According to records from the sheriff’s office there, the Georgia native faces charges of obstruction of officers and smash-and-grab burglary.

On Aug. 29, Gilbert was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary in Lincoln, Neb. In that case, officers responded to a burglary report about 2 a.m. local time and found the glass door to a liquor and vape store shattered.

They found Gilbert, 21, holding a bag containing more than $1,600 worth of stolen items, police said. Damage to the store was estimated at $650.

The former five-star recruit is a two-time transfer currently awaiting an NCAA eligibility ruling after previous stops at LSU (2020) and Georgia (2021-22).

Gilbert was ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 1 tight end in the 2020 class, the No. 10 player overall.

He caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman at LSU. He then transferred to his home-state Georgia and appeared in just three games for the Bulldogs, catching two passes for 16 yards and one touchdown last season.

While Nebraska officials have not commented on Friday’s arrest, coach Matt Rhule had this to say after the August arrest:

“Really disappointed, really sad for him,” Rhule said. “When we took Arik, we knew we had a good group of people who could help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in his life. Had been really proud of the job he had done in the spring and summer. To be honest, during camp he’s had some struggles. He’s been working to overcome them.”

Nebraska TE Arik Gilbert arrested on burglary charge

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of burglary in Lincoln, Neb., authorities said.

The former five-star recruit is a two-time transfer currently awaiting an NCAA eligibility ruling after previous stops at LSU (2020) and Georgia (2021-22).

Gilbert, 21, was arrested without incident and booked into the Lancaster County jail on a felony burglary charge, according to the Lincoln Police Department.

Officers responded to a burglary report about 2 a.m. local time and found the glass door to a liquor and vape store shattered.

They found Gilbert holding a bag containing more than $1,600 worth of stolen items, police said. Damage to the store was estimated at $650.

Gilbert was ranked by ESPN as the No. 6 overall recruit in the Class of 2020. He caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns as a true freshman at LSU.

He transferred to Georgia and appeared in just two games for the Bulldogs, catching two passes for 16 yards and one touchdown last season.

Because Gilbert already used his one-time transfer exemption, he is waiting on a waiver from the NCAA in order to be eligible this season.

Nebraska opens the season Thursday night at Minnesota.

Reports: Ex-LSU, Georgia TE Arik Gilbert is headed to Nebraska

Arik Gilbert is headed to his third college football team.

The former five-star tight end is transferring to Nebraska, according to multiple media reports, after playing at LSU for one season and Georgia for two seasons.

Gilbert played in only three games for the national champion Bulldogs last season, catching two passes for 16 yards. He didn’t play at all in the 2021 season, sitting it out for personal reasons, according to Georgia coach Kirby Smart.

Gilbert had a breakout freshman season at LSU in 2020 with 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns, before he transferred to Georgia.

While neither Gilbert nor Nebraska has confirmed his transfer, he is enrolled at Nebraska and could start classes Monday, when the spring semester begins, according to 247 Sports. Per the report, Gilbert visited Nebraska last weekend and is listed in the school’s student directory.

Gilbert is a 6-foot-5, 248-pounder from Marietta, Ga. He was rated the No. 5 overall recruit in the class of 2020 and the No. 1-ranked tight end, per 247 Sports. That remains the site’s top overall ranking ever for a tight end.

Nebraska has now landed two former Georgia players from the transfer portal. Edge defender MJ Sherman previously joined the Huskers.

Georgia lands LSU transfer TE Arik Gilbert, All-ACC DB

Georgia landed two former five-star recruits and top-notch transfers on Tuesday, tight end Arik Gilbert from LSU and defensive back Derion Kendrick from Clemson.

Gilbert had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns in his freshman year as a TE in Baton Rouge, La. However, the 6-foot-5 Gilbert says he’ll be part of the wide receiver corps in Athens.

“Being brought in to play wide receiver, I definitely think I can help the team win,” Gilbert told 247Sports. “Nothing is going to be given to me, so I am ready to get there and get to work with the team.”

The Bulldogs lost out on Gilbert, out of Marietta High School, to LSU in the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Kendrick was first team All-ACC defense after the 2020 season. Kendrick started at Clemson as a wide receiver before moving to cornerback in the spring of 2019. Kendrick made 23 starts the past three seasons but was dismissed by Clemson in February.

Kendrick missed multiple games in 2020 for disciplinary reasons. He earned second team All-ACC honors after the 2019 season.

Tight end Arik Gilbert said he is heading to the transfer portal again instead of the University of Florida after telling the school on Jan. 31 he was going to be Gator.

“I have decided to decommit from the university of Florida and re-enter the portal,” Gilbert tweeted. “I will not be announcing my final decision until I am enrolled into school and on campus.”

The 6-foot-5, 249-pound Gilbert, who was one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2020 cycle, played for LSU last season. But he decided to opt out of the season on Dec. 9 after posting 368 yards and two touchdowns on 35 receptions in eight games.

LSU coach Ed Orgeron said he hoped Gilbert would return to the team. Instead, he never played another down for the Tigers and ultimately entered the transfer portal, reopening his recruiting.

Gilbert, a five-star recruit ranked No. 5 nationally according to 247Sports in 2020, was expected to replace Kyle Pitts in Gainesville. The Gators’ standout tight end, who led the team in receiving touchdowns (12) last season, is expected to be among the first players taken in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Gators signed tight ends Gage Wilcox (four star) and Nick Elksnis (three star) in their 2021 recruiting class and also return Kemore Gamble, Keon Zipperer and Jonathan Odom from last year’s squad.

Former LSU TE Arik Gilbert transfers to SEC rival Florida

Former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert announced Sunday that he intends to transfer to Florida.

Gilbert will join a vaunted rival in the Southeastern Conference after spending one season with the Tigers. He had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns in eight games before opting out of the remainder of the season in early December.

At Florida, Gilbert could help replace tight end Kyle Pitts, who will enter the NFL draft. Pitts had 770 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last season in the Gators’ highly touted offense.

The Gators have been busy this offseason, adding former Clemson running back Demarkcus Bowman via the transfer portal earlier in January.

LSU tight end Gilbert to transfer

LSU tight end Arik Gilbert, a five-star recruit in the Class of 2020, said Saturday he will transfer from the school.

He made the announcement on Twitter, then deleted it.

His potential departure from Baton Rouge has been rumored over the past few weeks, with Gilbert, who is from Georgia, reportedly homesick.

Gilbert was the No. 1 tight end and the No. 5 player overall in the 2020 class, per the 247Sports composite. In July, he was named the 2020 Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year.

For the Tigers, Gilbert had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns. On Dec. 9, he opted out of the rest of the season, missing games against Florida and Ole Miss.

“He said his body was hurt and there were some things he had to take care of,” coach Ed Orgeron said last month. “Do I think we have a chance at getting him back next season? Yeah.”

As a high school player in Marietta, Ga., the 6-foot-5 Gilbert had scholarship offers from many of the nation’s top programs, including Alabama and Georgia.
