Northwestern to keep assistant coaches for 2023

After firing head coach Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern will retain the rest of its football coaching staff, the school told multiple media outlets Tuesday.

Northwestern did not name an interim head coach Monday when announcing Fitzgerald would not return. Defensive coordinator David Braun, however, is filling in as a “liaison” and could be elevated to interim coach, reports said.

Braun was hired in January after working as the defensive coordinator at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State from 2019-22.

Athletic director Derrick Gragg returned to campus Tuesday to address the football team in person. Gragg had been out of the country on vacation and held a Zoom call Monday night to reveal the Fitzgerald decision without taking questions from players.

University president Michael Schill did not attend that meeting, leading some players to tell ESPN and Rivals that they felt the administration’s handling of the matter was “cowardly” and disrespectful.

Fitzgerald, head coach at Northwestern since 2006, was fired on Monday with $42 million remaining on his contract. That decision came three days after the original discipline for Fitzgerald was a two-week suspension without pay, all stemming from an independent investigation that found hazing allegations were “largely supported by evidence.”

A player came forward to the student newspaper, the Daily Northwestern, and revealed that the hazing allegedly included coerced sexual acts. Fitzgerald was also accused of presiding over a “culture of enabling racism.”

Commanders name Ryan Kerrigan assistant D-line coach

The Washington Commanders named former standout Ryan Kerrigan their new assistant defensive line coach on Monday.

Kerrigan, 34, retired at the end of July but decided to continue hanging around with the team and working with the players to see if coaching was something he wanted to do.

“Coaching is something I want to explore because I just feel like I love the environment too much. I love the football building environment. I love being around the guys too much. And I love being able to impart some of the things I’ve learned over the past 11 years on people,” Kerrigan said then, at his retirement press conference.

A first-round pick in 2011, he earned four Pro Bowl selections, collected 95.5 sacks and started 139 consecutive games with Washington.

Kerrigan retired with 457 tackles (120 for losses), 149 quarterback hits, 95.5 sacks, 26 forced fumbles and three interceptions (all returned for touchdowns) in 172 games (143 starts) with Washington and Philadelphia (2021).

The Commanders fired defensive line coach Sam Mills III last month and promoted assistant defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina to fill the role.

Report: Steelers RB Conner, assistant coach test positive for virus

Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner and an unidentified assistant coach have tested positive for COVID-19, NFL Network reported on Saturday.

Per the report, Conner is awaiting a second test on Sunday to confirm the results. He is a cancer survivor — a group that the medical community has said could be at increased risk for complications from the virus.

The report comes on the heels of the Steelers placing defensive end Stephon Tuitt, defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs and offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.

It also comes after the NFL moved the initially scheduled game between the Steelers (10-0) and the visiting Baltimore Ravens (6-4) from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon to now Tuesday night. NBC will televise the game, set for 8 p.m. ET.

The moves have been necessitated because of an outbreak of COVID-19 among the Ravens.

If this game occurs as now planned on Tuesday, the NFL will move the Ravens’ Week 13 game as well.

“Should the game be played on Tuesday, the Week 13 Dallas Cowboys at Baltimore Ravens game, originally scheduled for Thursday, December 3, will be moved to Monday, December 7, at 5:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on FOX/NFL Network/Amazon,” the league said in a statement.

“These decisions were made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel and in consultation with medical experts.”

The Steelers remain set to host the Washington Football Team in Week 13 on Dec. 6.

The Steelers earlier saw their game against the Tennessee Titans rescheduled because of an outbreak affecting the Tennessee team. That moved forced the Steelers to have a Week 4 bye and gave them games in 13 straight weeks to end the season. Pittsburgh hoped to play on Thanksgiving to have the weekend off.

Conner, 25, leads the Steelers in carries (145), rushing yards (645) and rushing touchdowns (five). He also has 25 catches for 145 yards.
