Commanders CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) out vs. Steelers

The Washington Commanders ruled out newly acquired cornerback Marshon Lattimore for Sunday’s home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers because of a hamstring injury.

Commanders coach Dan Quinn made the announcement Friday after Lattimore — obtained from the New Orleans Saints at the league trade deadline on Tuesday for three draft picks — didn’t practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He was limited by a strained hamstring in recent weeks.

“We’re trying to engage him as quickly as we can, so when it does become ‘go time,’ there’s not a lag there,” Quinn said.

The Commanders (7-2) have a short week with a game at NFC East rival Philadelphia next Thursday.

Washington also worked out kickers with Austin Seibert dealing with a right hip issue and signed veteran Zane Gonzalez to the practice squad.

Lattimore, 28, started all seven games he played this season for the Saints before missing their game Sunday, a 23-22 loss at the Carolina Panthers. He has 30 tackles.

New Orleans selected him 11th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. A four-time Pro Bowl selection (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021) has 405 tackles, 15 interceptions — two returned for touchdowns — five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries and 88 pass breakups in 97 games (all starts).

Seibert, 27, has made 25 of 27 field-goal attempts — a long of 55 yards — and all 22 extra-point attempts in eight games in his first season with Washington. He missed practice on Wednesday and was limited on Thursday.

He has played 39 career games and is 70 of 83 on field goals and 78 of 84 on extra points for the Cleveland Browns (2019-20), Cincinnati Bengals (2020), Detroit Lions (2021-22), New York Jets (2023) and Commanders. The Browns picked him in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

Gonzalez, 29, has not played in an NFL game since 2021. He is 91 of 113 on field-goal attempts — a long of 57 yards — and 127 of 134 on extra points in 63 games for the Browns (2017-18), Arizona Cardinals (2018-20) and Panthers (2021). The Browns selected Gonzalez in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

Jets rule out K Greg Zuerlein (groin) vs. Cowboys

The New York Jets downgraded injured kicker Greg Zuerlein to out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Multiple media outlets reported on Saturday that the Jets (1-0) will sign kicker Austin Seibert to play against the Cowboys (1-0).

Zuerlein injured his groin in practice on Thursday, prompting the team to bring in three kickers on Friday.

Zuerlein made all three of his field-goal attempts in New York’s 22-16 overtime victory over the Buffalo Bills on Monday.

Zuerlein, 35, is in his 12th NFL season. He re-signed with the Jets in March after serving as the team’s kicker in 2022. He played for the Cowboys in 2020 and 2021.

Seibert, 26, was a fifth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He made 44 of 55 field goal attempts and converted 55 of 61 extra point tries in 30 career games with the Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Detroit Lions.

Lions place Pro Bowl C Frank Ragnow (toe) on IR

The Detroit Lions placed Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow on injured reserve Wednesday.

Ragnow, who is nursing an ailing toe, will miss at least the next three games for the winless Lions (0-4). He sustained the injury during the first half of Detroit’s 24-14 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday and joins star left tackle Taylor Decker (left index finger) on injured reserve.

Ragnow, 25, became the NFL’s highest-paid center in May after signing a four-year contract extension worth $13.5 million per season.

Ragnow has started 49 games since being selected by the Lions with the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. A Pro Bowl selection in 2020, Ragnow missed two games last season with a fractured throat.

Also on Wednesday, Detroit activated kicker Austin Seibert from the reserve/COVID-19 list. Seibert has missed the team’s past two games.

The Lions also signed linebacker Jessie Lemonier to the active roster from the practice squad.

NFL waivers roundup: Lions claim K Austin Seibert

One day after cutting both of their kickers, the Detroit Lions claimed Austin Seibert off waivers on Wednesday.

Seibert was one of 27 waiver claims made, beginning with the Jacksonville Jaguars who had top priority and claimed wide receiver Tyron Johnson from the Los Angeles Chargers.

Detroit cut both Randy Bullock and Zane Gonzalez on Tuesday and did not have a regular kicker on its initial 53-man roster. Seibert, a third-year pro, kicked in five games last season for the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. He was waived by the Bengals.

Johnson caught 20 passes for 398 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games last season for the Chargers. He joins a receiver corps of DJ Chark Jr., Marvin Jones Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. in Jacksonville.

Teams making waiver claims will need to make a corresponding move to create room on their 53-man rosters.

Other notable claims:

–The Dallas Cowboys claimed quarterback Will Grier, waived by the Carolina Panthers. The move would seem to end speculation about the Cowboys’ interest in Cam Newton, cut Tuesday by the New England Patriots. He joins Cooper Rush to back up the recovering Dak Prescott. The Cowboys cut Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert on Tuesday.

–The New York Giants claimed three off waivers, tops in the league: linebacker Justin Hilliard (from the San Francisco 49ers), wide receiver Collin Johnson (Jaguars), and linebacker Quincy Roche (Pittsburgh Steelers).

–The crosstown Jets made two claims, including linebacker Quincy Williams, brother of Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams. The Jets also claimed defensive end Tim Ward from the Kansas City Chiefs.

–The Carolina Panthers claimed offensive lineman Michael Jordan, waived by the Bengals.

–The Minnesota Vikings, who lost Irv Smith Jr. for the season to injury, claimed fellow tight end Ben Ellefson from the Jaguars.

–The Patriots claimed running back Malcolm Perry, the former Navy standout who was waived by the Miami Dolphins.

–The Indianapolis Colts claimed two defensive backs, Thakarius Keyes from the Chiefs and Chris Wilcox from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Report: Browns signing K Parkey from practice squad

The Cleveland Browns are making a quick change at kicker and signing Cody Parkey from their practice squad, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday.

The move comes one day after 2019 fifth-round draft pick Austin Seibert missed both of his kicks — a 41-yard field goal and an extra point — in Sunday’s season-opening 38-6 loss at Baltimore.

Cleveland.com reported the Browns waived Seibert on Monday afternoon.

Seibert, 23, made 25 of 29 field-goal attempts and 30 of 35 PATs in 16 games with the Browns as a rookie in 2019.

Parkey, 28, was a Pro Bowl selection as a 2014 rookie with Philadelphia but has bounced around with four other teams in the past four years — including the Browns.

He has converted 84.3 percent of his field goals (102 of 121) and 95.1 percent of his extra points (154 of 162) in 68 games with the Eagles (2014-15), Cleveland Browns (2016), Miami Dolphins (2017), Chicago Bears (2018) and Tennessee Titans (2019).

With his Bears trailing the Eagles 16-15 in an NFC wild-card playoff game at Soldier Field on Jan. 6, 2019, Parkey missed a game-winning field goal when his 43-yard attempt struck the left upright and the crossbar — dubbed the “double doink.”
