Report: Bears QB Justin Fields (thumb) to return Sunday

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields will return Sunday after missing four games with a right thumb injury, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Fields will test his grip strength at Wednesday’s practice. If all goes well, Fields will start for the Bears (3-7) on Sunday at the Detroit Lions (7-2).

Fields, 24, has been sidelined since sustaining a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand in a Week 6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 15.

Fields is 1-5 as a starter this season, completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,201 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has rushed for 237 yards and a touchdown and has been sacked 24 times.

Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent relieved Fields in the Minnesota game and is 2-2 as a starter in his absence. He has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 859 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions.

Bear down: QB Justin Fields doubtful for Thursday

Rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent was prepared to start his fourth consecutive game with the Bears listing Justin Fields as doubtful after he was limited in practice this week.

Fields returned to practice on a limited basis on Friday but continues to be less than full strength dealing with an injured right thumb.

He was officially dubbed doubtful to return for Thursday night’s home game against the Carolina Panthers (1-7).

The Bears (2-7) are still calling Fields “week to week,” the same assessment given from the team since he was injured in the Oct. 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Bagent relieved Fields in that game and his comeback attempt came up short with a game-ending interception. Bagent is 1-2 as a starter.

He posted his first career game with two touchdown passes in a 24-17 loss at New Orleans last week.

NFL Week 9 Player Props: Ode to QB2s, revenge plot in Germany

With eight weeks of the regular season in the books, we have a mature player props market with plentiful data points.

Finding winners will become increasingly difficult as the bookmakers sharpen their lines. As a result, this is the time of year when exercising discipline can save your bankroll.

When studying player props, we typically skew more toward playing under this time of year. However, after beginning with an overall handicap of the Week 9 games, I noticed that quite a few overs piqued my interest.

That can sometimes be a red flag, so we will be a bit cautious in adding more plays. As a result, these are three most intriguing player props heading into Week 9.

–Falcons QB Taylor Heinicke over 10.5 rushing yards (-115 at BetMGM)
Falcons head coach Arthur Smith announced they’re turning to Heinicke after the veteran backup replaced Desmond Ridder last week in the third quarter against the Titans.

Ridder underwent a concussion evaluation at halftime and, despite being cleared, did not check back into the game. He’s been turnover-prone and Heinicke was very productive, albeit against a Titans’ defense clearly playing it safe with a big lead.

Heinicke orchestrated four scoring drives for 20 points and 253 total yards compared to one scoring drive for three points in the first half for Ridder. And while Smith doesn’t view this change as permanent, Heinicke is clearly auditioning for the job.

Opportunities for Heinicke to run the ball against a Minnesota defense that forces opposing quarterbacks to step up in the pocket.

According to Pro-Football-Reference, the Vikings lead the league with a 52.7 percent blitz rate. That’s almost 10 percent higher than the Giants, who rank second at 43.1.

The Vikings have also allowed the sixth-most rushing yards (170) to opposing quarterbacks this season.

Based on these factors, we have enough to play Heinicke over his rushing prop.

–Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa over 22.5 pass attempts (-130 at FanDuel)

There are plenty of storylines in Germany as two of the AFC’s top teams take part of the NFL’s International Series.

The Dolphins and Chiefs have matching 6-2 records. But Miami has yet to beat a team with a record over .500. In comparison, the Chiefs have three wins over .500 teams.

There’s also the Tyreek Hill angle, as the dynamic wide receiver will line up against his former team after spending five years in Kansas City before he was traded during contract talks with the Chiefs.

Even before playing his first game with the Dolphins, Hill drew some criticism after commenting that Tagovailoa was a more accurate passer than Mahomes.

While some in the media interpreted Hill’s comments as a slight towards Mahomes, he never said Tagovailoa was the better quarterback. Hill praised Mahomes for having the stronger arm between the two.

Nonetheless, we have a revenge angle here with Hill facing the Chiefs.

This game will take place at Deutsche Bank Park, which has a retractable roof. The total remains steady at 50.5, the highest of the week.

Given the subplots with Tagovailoa vs. Mahomes and Hill facing his former team, it wouldn’t surprise me if this game turns into a track meet.

–Tyson Bagent over 18.5 completions (-110 at DraftKings)
With Justin Fields still nursing a right thumb injury, Bagent will make his third straight start. While the rookie has only 80 passes this season, he’s completing 70 percent of his attempts.

It also doesn’t hurt that his average intended air yards (5.6) puts him dead last among quarterbacks with at least 68 pass attempts.

It’s not a stretch to think that the Bears’ passing offense is somewhat risk-averse with Bagent under center.

If the Bears continue with this conservative approach, Bagent should be able to pick up some easy completions against the Saints with this prop going over the number.

Bears QB Justin Fields not ready to test thumb

Rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent remains the starter for the Bears when Chicago visits the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Justin Fields is not ready to test his injured right thumb and remains week-to-week with a possibility of returning to practice next week.

The Bears (2-6) will return home from New Orleans (4-4) to a short week of preparation for a Thursday night game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10.

Head coach Matt Eberflus labeled Fields “week to week,” the same assessment given from the team since he was injured in the Oct. 15 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Bagent relieved Fields in that game and his comeback attempt came up short with a game-ending interception.

Bagent is 1-1 as a starter with one touchdown and three interceptions, but is completing 70 percent of his passes and has been sacked only three times. Fields was injured trying to escape pressure and was sacked 24 times in the first six games of the 2023 season.

Bears hope for strong encore from Tyson Bagent vs. Chargers

Undrafted Tyson Bagent will look to guide the Chicago Bears to their second straight victory when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.

Bagent, a product of Division II Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va., started last week in place of Justin Fields (right thumb) and completed 21 of 29 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in Chicago’s 30-12 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 23-year-old didn’t mince words on Wednesday when addressing just what that start meant to him.

“Everything,” he said. “Everybody knows coming from where I come from, both the division I came from, kind of how I grew up with not a whole lot of football resources around me. It felt good to be able to just have hard work be rewarded.”

The Bears (2-5) have won two of their past three contests following a 14-game skid that dated to last season.

Given the team’s recent success, perhaps it’s no surprise that Bagent said he’d like to keep his same practice habits going into the prime-time game against the Chargers (2-4).

“I just like to keep it as similar as possible,” he said. “This week is going to be similar to last week in the sense of the reps that I’m getting in practice. But other than that, just keep everything the same.”

Chicago left tackle Braxton Jones returned to practice Wednesday in what could be positive news for Bagent as he prepares to face a pass rush led by Joey Bosa and former Bears linebacker Khalil Mack.

Jones (neck) joined fellow offensive lineman Dan Feeney (knee) and defensive back Eddie Jackson (foot) in being limited in practice on Wednesday. Fields, offensive linemen Nate Davis (ankle) and Darnell Wright (shoulder, toe) and defensive backs Jaquan Brisker (illness) and Terell Smith (illness) did not participate at all.

Bears running back D’Onta Foreman responded to four weeks of being a healthy scratch earlier in the season by putting his best foot forward after being promoted to a starting role due to injuries to Khalil Herbert, rookie Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer. Foreman recorded three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving) last week against the Raiders.

Johnson, who is dealing with a concussion, was a full participant in practice on Wednesday.

The Chargers have been extremely generous on defense, allowing an NFL-worst 310 passing yards per game and a league second-worst 406.8 total yards per contest.

Los Angeles traditionally relies on Justin Herbert, but the strong-armed quarterback has struggled since he sustained a fractured finger on his left hand in Week 4.

Herbert has passed for just 653 yards and tossed four interceptions in his past three games, including a 17-for-30 performance for 259 yards with a touchdown and two picks in a 31-17 setback to the Kansas City Chiefs last week. The loss was the second in a row for the Chargers.

“It’s tough. It’s the NFL, and that’s the tough part about it,” Herbert said. “But you have to keep answering, you have to keep fighting. No one in the locker room is down. No one is worried or panicking. We have to get this thing going, and we know we have the guys to get it done.”

One of those guys is Keenan Allen, who leads the team in catches (46), receiving yards (574) and receiving touchdowns (four). Fellow wideout Joshua Palmer produced a career-high 133 receiving yards last week vs. the Chiefs, but a knee ailment caused him to join tight end Gerald Everett (hip) in failing to participate in practice on Wednesday.

Los Angeles will look to take advantage of a struggling Chicago defense. The Bears are yielding 257.1 yards per game through the air, fourth worst in the NFL, and 26.9 points per contest, fifth worst.

Bears’ Tyson Bagent gets start; Justin Fields targeting Week 9

Justin Fields is at least one week away from regaining his starting job at quarterback and is targeting a Nov. 5 return against the New Orleans Saints.

Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said there is no change in Fields’ status for this week. He’s officially doubtful with a thumb injury, meaning rookie Tyson Bagent gets the green light to make another start for Chicago in the primetime game Sunday at the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Tyson will be our starter,” Eberflus said, noting Fields is progressing and working to get back on the field.

Bagent started last week in Fields’ place and Chicago beat the Las Vegas Raiders, 30-12, to improve to 2-5. He has completed 72.1 percent of his passes in the past two games, which includes most of the second half of a near-comeback against the Minnesota Vikings in which Fields was injured.

Left tackle Braxton Jones returned to practice Wednesday in what could be positive news for Bagent as he prepares to face a pass rush led by Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa.

Eberflus didn’t commit to a timeframe for Fields’ return, but said he would be the starter when he’s ready to play.

Fields still has swelling in his right hand, which limits his grip strength and might be more problematic in cold or wet weather with a slick football.

QB1 still doubtful, Bears prepare Tyson Bagent for first start

Tyson Bagent operated the starting offense for the Chicago Bears at practice on Wednesday with the expectation he’ll be in that role Sunday when the Las Vegas Raiders visit Soldier Field.

Starter Justin Fields left last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings in the third quarter with a dislocated thumb on his right hand. Swelling is slowly subsiding but compromises Fields’ grip strength.

Head coach Matt Eberflus said Wednesday there is no change to Fields’ status for Week 7: He’s doubtful and surgery remains a possibility. Eberflus said “clarity” on a long-term plan is expected sometime this week.

“Again, nothing’s off the table. Nothing’s on the table — right now. We’ve still got to see where it is,” Eberflus said.

Bagent was one of the remarkable stories of the preseason for the Bears. The undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd University beat out PJ Walker, the former XFL QB who started for the Cleveland Browns last week, to back up Fields. Bagent scored a rushing touchdown but lost a fumble and threw a game-ending interception in the 19-13 loss to Minnesota.

“This is only going to be beneficial to him to get all these reps this week,” Eberflus said. “I’m excited to see where he is. I know the guys have a lot of confidence in him. He’s a very confident guy.”

Nathan Peterman is the third quarterback on the roster and would be active Sunday if Fields is out. Peterman, 29, has 13 interceptions in 13 career games, including five starts. He entered the NFL in 2017 with the Buffalo Bills and also played for the Raiders.
