Panthers acquire CB Michael Jackson from Seahawks

The Carolina Panthers acquired cornerback Michael Jackson from the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday for rookie linebacker Michael Barrett.

Jackson, 27, appeared in all 34 games for Seattle over the past two seasons, starting 21 of them.

He has 112 tackles, 19 passes defensed and one interception in 38 games (21 starts) with the Detroit Lions (2019), New England Patriots (2020) and Seahawks. He originally was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round in 2019.

The Panthers needed depth at cornerback after recent injuries to starter Dane Jackson (hamstring) and backup Lamar Jackson (knee).

Barrett, 24, was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He recorded 65 tackles, three sacks and three forced fumbles in 15 games for the national champion Wolverines in 2023.

Report: Bucs parting ways with LB Shaquil Barrett

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will release veteran linebacker Shaquil Barrett in a salary-slashing move, ESPN reported Tuesday.

Cutting ties with the two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time Super Bowl champion will provide nearly $5 million in salary cap relief.

Barrett, 31, has an option bonus of $15.04 million due next month. The Bucs will designate the nine-year veteran as a post-June 1 cut, enabling them to divide his $26.67 million dead cap costs over 2024 and 2025. That means a $9.3 million cap hit in 2024 and $17.5 million in 2025, per the report.

Anticipating the move, Barrett said last month that he hoped to remain with Tampa Bay but understood that “it’s a business.”

Barrett started 16 games in 2023, equaling his career high, and delivered 4.5 sacks, 52 tackles, three forced fumbles and one interception (a pick-six in a Week 2 win against the Chicago Bears).

He has 59 sacks, 125 quarterback hits, 22 forced fumbles and 400 tackles in 131 games (85 starts) with the Denver Broncos (2015-18) and Buccaneers. He won Super Bowl 50 with Denver and SB LV with Tampa Bay.

Bucs LB Shaq Barrett says he’ll be ready to start season

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett expects to be recovered from a torn Achilles in time to start the 2023 season.

“I’m gonna be ready to go when it’s time to go,” he told the “Loose Cannons” podcast on Friday. “I’m pretty sure ‘time to go’ will be the first game. I don’t anticipate missing any games. I don’t anticipate being on any play counts. So, I should be ready to go for the first game for sure.”

Barrett, 30, sustained the season-ending injury to his left leg during the Buccaneers’ Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

He finished the 2022 campaign with 31 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble in eight games.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Barrett has 348 tackles, 54.5 sacks, 19 forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in 115 career games (69 starts) with the Denver Broncos (2015-18) and Buccaneers.
