Tyler Bass connects from 61, Bills edge Dolphins

Tyler Bass put a 61-yard field goal right down the middle with five seconds remaining to lift the Buffalo Bills to a 30-27 win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in Orchard Park, N.Y.

Buffalo (7-2) led by seven after Josh Allen connected with Quintin Morris for a 2-yard touchdown and a 27-20 lead with 6:18 left in the fourth quarter.

However, Miami (2-6) proceeded to zip down the field, knotting things at 27 on Tua Tagovailoa’s 7-yard scoring strike to Jaylen Waddle.

But Bass came to the Bills’ rescue, and following his kick, a lateral play by the Dolphins went nowhere.

Allen finished with 235 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on 25-of-39 passing as Buffalo won its fourth straight game. Khalil Shakir hauled in six catches for 50 yards.

Tagovailoa completed 25 of 28 passes for 231 yards and two TDs but the Dolphins dropped their third straight game. Tyreek Hill finished with four receptions for 80 yards, while De’Von Achane rushed for a score and was on the receiving end of another.

Raheem Mostert fumbled on the first drive of the third quarter, setting Buffalo up at its own 36. Eleven plays later, Allen found Mack Hollins for a 1-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal. Bass missed the ensuing extra-point attempt, leaving the Bills up 12-10.

Jason Sanders made Bass’ miss sting even more when he made good on a 23-yard field goal with 2:59 remaining in the third to move the Dolphins in front.

Buffalo didn’t stay down for long, though, as Ray Davis scored on a 63-yard catch-and-run just 52 seconds later. The Bills then cashed in on a two-point conversion attempt to make it 20-13.

Achane tied the game at 20 with an 8-yard TD run early in the fourth.

Miami went up 10-3 thanks to a methodical 14-play, 97-yard march that ended with Achane’s 14-yard touchdown reception with 3:20 left in the first half. The drive ate nearly 8 1/2 minutes of clock.

Allen ran to the end zone from 21 yards out on the next drive, but the TD was nullified because of a holding call, and the Bills ended up having to settle for Bass’ 49-yard field goal.

The teams traded field goals in the first quarter, with Bass booting a 40-yarder before Sanders drew the Dolphins even with a 39-yarder.

WR Amari Cooper expected to make Bills debut Sunday

The Buffalo Bills expect newly acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper to make his debut for the team Sunday against the visiting Tennessee Titans.

Cooper, 30, came to the Bills via trade from the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. Originally, the team was undecided on whether he would play against the Titans, but coach Sean McDermott sounded more certain of a plan Friday.

“We’ll see. I think so,” McDermott said when asked if Cooper would play this week for the Bills (4-2).

McDermott said he will confer with the coaching staff before making a final decision.

Coming off a career-high 1,250 receiving yards last year for Cleveland, Cooper got off to a slow start this season. In six games, he had 24 receptions for 250 yards and two touchdowns. His per-catch average of 10.4 yards is on pace for a career low and 7 yards under last year’s career-best average.

Now with his fourth NFL franchise, Cooper gets an upgrade at quarterback from Deshaun Watson to Josh Allen, who has thrown 156 passes this year without an interception.

“As far as playing with Josh, I’ve always been (a) fan of his game,” Cooper said this week. “I’m sure to see it up close and personal and play alongside him. I’m sure it’s going to be great. I’m just excited to turn a new chapter and to be able to contribute.”

The Bills haven’t had a go-to receiver this season after trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in the offseason.

Buffalo also is expected to have defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) on the field. Oliver, 26, was inactive for each of the past two games. He has a sack among his five tackles in four games this season.

“I expect him at this point to play in the game,” McDermott said Friday of Oliver.

Running back James Cook (toe) also is expected to play, while running back Ray Davis is now limited after coming away with a calf injury in practice Thursday.

The Bills will stick with struggling kicker Tyler Bass after multiple kickers were brought in for a tryout Wednesday before Lucas Havrisik was signed to the practice squad. Bass, 27, has converted nine of 12 field goals and 18 of 20 extra points this season.

Tyler Bass’ field goal lifts Bills past Lions

Tyler Bass kicked a 45-yard field goal with two seconds left, giving the visiting Buffalo Bills a 28-25 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday afternoon.

Detroit’s Michael Badgley kicked a tying 51-yard field goal with 23 seconds left to tie it but Josh Allen’s 36-yard pass to Stefon Diggs set up the game-winner.

Allen passed for 253 yards and two scores and was intercepted once and also rushed 10 times for 78 yards and another touchdown. Isaiah McKenzie caught six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, while Diggs caught eight passes for 77 yards and a score for Buffalo (8-3).

Jared Goff passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (4-7), who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Jamaal Williams rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries, while Amon-Ra St. Brown caught nine passes for 122 yards and a touchdown

Bills linebacker Von Miller was carted off late in the first half with a knee injury.

Buffalo led 17-14 at the break.

The Lions got on the board first with a 61-yard drive completed by Williams’ 13th rushing touchdown this season, a 2-yard run.

The Bills answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive. Allen’s 21-yard run set up his 19-yard scoring pass to McKenzie.

A Williams fumble led to a 58-yard Buffalo scoring drive. Allen finished it off with a rush up the middle.

The Lions converted a fourth-and-1 from the own 33 during their second touchdown drive. The 15-play drive was finished off with another fourth down conversion, Goff’s 1-yard pass to St. Brown to tie it at 14.

Bass gave Buffalo the halftime lead with his 47-yard field goal.

The Bills took a 19-14 lead in the third quarter when Ed Oliver sacked Goff in the end zone.

D.J. Chark caught a 1-yard pass from Goff with 13:47 left to put Detroit back on top. The score was set up by Kalif Raymond’s 41-yard punt return. D’Andre Swift ran for the two-point conversion to make it a three-point game.

Buffalo then drove 90 yards on 14 plays. Allen finished it off with a 5-yard pass to Diggs. The extra point was missed, leaving the score at 25-22.
