Misdemeanor battery charge added against Chiefs WR Justyn Ross

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross was due in court Tuesday afternoon to face a pair of misdemeanor charges, including domestic battery.

It initially was reported that Ross was arrested Monday in Shawnee, Kan., on suspicion of criminal damage exceeding $25,000, a felony.

However, a report from 610SportsKC on Tuesday said he was in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office on domestic battery with no priors and criminal damage of less than $1,000.

He was being held without bond pending the arraignment on Tuesday.

The Chiefs acknowledged awareness of the arrest but have yet to issue an official comment.

Ross, 23, was signed by Kansas City as an undrafted free agent out of Clemson in May 2022. He missed all of last season due to a foot injury.

He made his NFL debut this year, and he has appeared off the bench in all seven of the Chiefs’ games. Ross has three catches for 34 yards, though he hasn’t been targeted with a pass in either of the past two games.

Ross had a 1,000-yard receiving season for Clemson as a freshman in 2018, but he missed all of the 2020 season following spinal surgery.

USF suspends RB Michel Dukes after battery arrest

South Florida suspended senior running back Michel Dukes indefinitely on Monday following a felony arrest this weekend.

He faces a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Dukes was arrested Saturday on the USF campus and his bond was set at $2,000, according to arrest records.

“I applaud the victim for coming forward,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a news release. “We do not tolerate domestic violence. There is never a reason or excuse for this type of behavior. Our Victim Advocates will ensure this individual gets connected with any and all resources.”

The USF athletics department released a statement Monday saying it is continuing to gather more information.

Dukes, 22, transferred to USF in 2022 after three seasons at Clemson. He played in 11 games for the Bulls and rushed for 188 yards and five touchdowns, adding eight receptions for 72 yards.

Cardinals RBs coach James Saxon facing battery charges

Arizona Cardinals running backs coach James Saxon is facing two counts of domestic battery linked to an alleged incident this spring.

The charges in Indianapolis include a Level 6 felony for allegedly assaulting a woman in front of a child younger than 16, ESPN reported Friday.

The alleged incident occurred May 7 and began with an argument at a Costco store and continued at the woman’s home, according to police records.

Saxon, 56, has an attorney conference scheduled for Aug. 25, at which point a trial date could be set.

The Level 6 (least serious in Indiana) felony charge carries a sentence range of six months to 2 1/2 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The second charge is a Class A misdemeanor.

According to the woman’s probable cause affidavit, Saxon repeatedly pushed her in front of two children and she fell into a garage door.

The Cardinals told ESPN on Thursday they are looking into the matter. Saxon is currently working with the team at training camp in Glendale, Ariz.

Saxon joined Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s staff in February 2019. He previously coached running backs for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills dating back to 2000.

Saxon played fullback in the NFL from 1988-95 with the Chiefs, Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles. He rushed for 533 yards and five touchdowns and caught 69 passes for 515 yards in 111 games (16 starts).

Report: NFL still reviewing Alvin Kamara incident

The NFL is still monitoring Alvin Kamara’s legal situation stemming from his February arrest on battery charges in Las Vegas, ESPN reported Saturday.

The New Orleans Saints running back has an Aug. 1 court date and potentially could be suspended by the league under the personal conduct policy.

Sources told ESPN that there is no firm timeline on a disciplinary decision by the NFL, meaning Kamara could be available for the Sept. 11 season opener against the Atlanta Falcons unless he is placed on paid leave via the commissioner’s exempt list.

Kamara, who turns 27 on Monday, was arrested on felony battery charges after a Feb. 5 incident at a Las Vegas nightclub during the NFL’s Pro Bowl weekend.

According to police, video evidence shows Kamara punching a man eight times. The alleged victim was knocked unconscious and sustained an orbital fracture to his right eye, police said. After the man fell, he was allegedly stomped on by others in Kamara’s group.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons was also arrested on battery charges.

Kamara played in the Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas the day after the incident.

A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Kamara has rushed for 4,238 yards and 47 touchdowns and caught 373 passes for 3,263 yards and 20 scores in 73 games (45 starts) with the Saints since 2017.

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith surrendered to Louisiana authorities Tuesday night to face a second-degree battery charge.

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Seattle Times that Smith was booked and then released on $25,000 bond.

A warrant for his arrest had been issued on Monday in connection with an incident at a New Orleans-area coffee shop on Saturday night.

The Seahawks, who signed Smith to a one-year deal earlier this month, issued a statement Monday saying they were aware of the situation.

“Aldon notified us and we are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time,” the team said.

Smith, 31, made a strong comeback last season with the Dallas Cowboys, starting all 16 games and recording five sacks, 14 quarterback hits, 48 tackles and two fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown.

He was the No. 7 overall pick by San Francisco in 2011 and registered 33.5 sacks in his first 32 games with the 49ers, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2012.

However, following a series of arrests and off-field issues, as well as multiple team and league suspensions, Smith was suspended by the NFL in November 2015. He wasn’t reinstated until last May.

Smith has 52.5 sacks and 103 quarterback hits in 75 games (53 starts) with the 49ers (2011-14), Oakland Raiders (2015) and Cowboys.
