Cardinals draft Miami QB Carson Beck to open third round

The Arizona Cardinals became the next team to address the quarterback position in the 2026 NFL Draft when they used the first pick of the third round Friday on Miami’s Carson Beck.

Beck was the third quarterback taken in this draft and the first on Day 2. No signal-caller was selected between Ty Simpson to the Los Angeles Rams at No. 13 overall and Beck at No. 65.

Beck, 23, transferred to Miami last year after playing parts of five seasons for Georgia. He guided the Hurricanes to the national championship game, which they lost to Indiana and QB Fernando Mendoza — the No. 1 overall pick Thursday by the Las Vegas Raiders.

In 55 career games at the college level, Beck threw for 11,725 yards and 88 touchdowns with 32 interceptions, including a career-best 30 TDs in 2025.

Beck could have an early opportunity to start for Arizona, which released Kyler Murray in March. Jacoby Brissett, who went 1-11 as the Cardinals’ starter in 2025, is holding out for a contract extension. The team also has journeyman Gardner Minshew II and reserve Kedon Slovis.

Other quarterbacks waiting to hear their name called on Day 2 include LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State’s Drew Allar and Arkansas’ Taylen Green, among others.

Miami not fazed by being visitors in ‘home’ digs

Miami will be the visitors in every meaning of the word when it faces Indiana in Monday night’s College Football Playoff national title game.

The top-seeded Hoosiers are 8.5-point favorites over the No. 10 Hurricanes despite the game being played in Miami’s home stadium at Miami Gardens, Fla., and the Hurricanes will be placed on the visiting sideline and wearing white uniforms.

In other words, not the usual “home” environment at the stadium in which Miami is 13-1 over the past two seasons.

“I’m sure some guys might get confused and start running to the other sideline mid-game,” Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck said, laughing. “But at the end of the day, once you step on the lines, between the field, it’s the same size end zone, same 100 yards, and it’s going to come down to the execution.”

Hurricanes star running back Mark Fletcher Jr. can feel the oddness of standing on the opposite sideline.

“I know that’s probably going to feel a little weird,” Fletcher said. “But just spot the ball. We play on that grass.”

As for being home underdogs, standout defensive end Akheem Mesidor says to bring it on.

“I’ve been an underdog my whole life, so being an underdog in this last game — being an underdog in every game we played in the playoffs — really doesn’t mean anything to me,” Mesidor said. “It might fuel me a little bit, but at the end of the day, I just want to play football and show that we are the best team in the nation.”

Star defensive end Rueben Bain Jr. said the general sentiment that Miami faces long odds is providing big-time fuel.

“Motivated by being an underdog is a lot,” said Bain, the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. “I feel like that’s been our whole journey, the whole story of the whole playoffs. We like it. We don’t want nobody to believe in us. The people that believe in us is just the program, and that’s all we need.

“Everybody in that room putting on pads is helping us try to get to our better goal and that’s all we need. It’s going to be a little different not having the same sideline and things like that, but no matter where we at, we going to get the job done.”

Miami reached the final with wins over No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Ole Miss. The Hurricanes are seeking their sixth national crown, last won in the 2001 season.

Indiana, which received a first-round bye, has walloped No. 9 Alabama and No. 5 Oregon by a combined 94-25 in its first two playoff games. The Hoosiers are looking for their first national title.

Utah OC Jason Beck takes same position at Michigan

Utah offensive coordinator Jason Beck will join former Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff at Michigan and fill the same role with the Wolverines.

Whittingham confirmed the news during an appearance Thursday on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” calling the hiring “huge for us.”

“It’s going to be a big plus having him there in Ann Arbor,” Whittingham added.

Beck, 45, just completed his first season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at No. 15 Utah (11-2), which routed Nebraska 44-22 on Wednesday in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Utes averaged 41.2 points and 482.9 yards of offense per game this season.

He previously served as the OC/QBs coach at New Mexico (2025) and Syracuse (2023) after coaching quarterbacks for Syracuse (2022), Virginia (2016-21) and his alma mater BYU (2013-15).

Alabama’s Ty Simpson pulls even atop Heisman race

Ty Simpson, step on up, you are the newest in a growing list of “Who wants to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy” contestants.

While Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was sticking a fork in his fledgling Heisman hopes with a three-interception performance against Texas and Oregon’s Dante Moore put a significant dent in his with two picks in a home loss to Indiana, Alabama’s junior signal-caller leapt to the front of the pack with another impressive outing at Missouri.

Simpson threw three touchdowns in the 27-24 win over the Tigers, pushing his season total to 16 against a lone interception. Simpson is now the co-favorite at +350 at BetMGM along with a familiar foe — former Georgia and current Miami quarterback Carson Beck.

Beck, who was the +500 favorite last week, saw his odds trimmed even further despite not even playing.

That’s because Moore, who owned the second shortest odds at +700, couldn’t overcome poor pass protection in the Ducks’ 10-point home loss to the Hoosiers. That more than wiped out the good vibes from a three-touchdown performance against Penn State, which just fired its coaches after two embarrassing losses since.

Moore is now in longshot status at +1700, which also places him behind Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza (+550), Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (+1400) and his Buckeyes teammate quarterback Julian Sayin (+1500).

Just behind Moore are three quarterbacks from undefeated teams: Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed (+2000), Ole Miss’ Trinidad Chambliss (+2000) and Southern Cal’s Jayden Maiava (+2200).

Beck holds a slight +360 edge over Simpson (+370) at DraftKings, where Mendoza is +550 followed by Sayin at +1500 and Smith at +1600

Simpson’s rise into the Heisman conversation has been steady since the Crimson Tide’s season-opening loss at Florida State. After being +5500 to start the season he was still on the outside looking in at +1000 just two weeks ago. But with others continuing to stumble, Simpson has taken full advantage.

Mendoza also enjoyed a strong jump back into the thick of the conversation in leading Indiana’s win at Oregon that vaulted the Hoosiers to No. 3 in the nation.

The constant churn at the top is setting up to be a big win for sportsbooks.

Moore had just taken over as the biggest liability at BetMGM, having accounted for 16.9 percent of all money wagered on the Heisman market. That had surpassed preseason favorite Manning, who has drawn 9.5 percent of the money but fell out of the race with poor outings in losses to Ohio State and Florida.

The book’s third-biggest liability is Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, who received some love from the public as a longshot to begin the season but has not emerged as a Heisman factor. Mateer stood to be a big liability after bursting out of the gates, but may have too far to go to recover from his three-pick outing in a return from hand surgery Saturday.

The biggest remaining liability for BetMGM is Smith, who has the shortest odds among non-quarterbacks. The sophomore has hauled in 40 passes for 505 yards and 7 touchdowns during the Buckeyes’ 6-0 start.

Also likely out of the conversation are LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, who spent short stints atop the Heisman odds earlier this season.

Nussmeier, who outdueled Sellers in a 20-10 win by the Tigers, has drawn 6.3 percent of the total bets but currently sits as a +4000 longshot. Sellers has plummeted to +10000 but remains fifth at the book while being backed by 5.7 percent of all bets.

Miami’s Carson Beck joins Oregon’s Dante Moore atop Heisman race

The Miami Hurricanes have knocked off three ranked opponents through their first five games of the season, helping quarterback Carson Beck vault to the forefront of the Heisman Trophy race.

A co-favorite at one point earlier this season, Beck drifted back a few spots before leading a convincing win Saturday night at No. 18 Florida State. In his first road game as a Hurricane, Beck threw four touchdowns in the 28-22 victory.

The primetime win over an in-state rival saw Beck’s Heisman odds trimmed from +1200 to +500 at BetMGM. That moved him ahead of Oregon quarterback Dante Moore, who had emerged as the latest in a growing list of favorites at +750 last week. He is now +700, ahead of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson and Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at +800.

Smith, who has the shortest odds among non-quarterbacks by a wide margin, opened at +1300 but has seen his odds steadily shorten while catching 35 passes for 463 yards and six touchdowns through the top-ranked Buckeyes’ 5-0 start.

Meanwhile, DraftKings is still offering Moore as the slight +600 favorite ahead of Beck (+650) and Simpson (+700), with Smith a bit further back at +1000.

Marcel Reed, QB, Texas A&M (+4000), (+1500), (+2000)
Arch Manning, QB, Texas (+900), (+2000), (+8000)

The Heisman field does appear to be whittling down to those four with several other previous leading candidates seeing their hopes dashed by poor performance or injury.

That includes preseason favorite Arch Manning, whose odds have tumbled to +8000 at BetMGM while Texas has plummeted out of the Top 25. His fall stands to be a big win for sportsbooks, with BetMGM reporting the Longhorns quarterback to be its second-biggest Heisman liability as Manning leads all players with 11.3 percent of all money wagered backing him to win.

The book’s biggest liability has not threatened the Heisman picture since the season kicked off. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love was a popular longshot choice at +5000, but his odds are still only +4000 with the Fighting Irish having suffered a pair of losses.

Other favorites also have stumbled: LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier (+4000) due to mediocre play and fellow quarterbacks LaNorris Sellers (+8000) of South Carolina and Oklahoma’s John Mateer (+3000) due to injury. Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, who also rose to favorite status in September, remains in the conversation at +1300.

Mateer is the third biggest liability and Sellers the fifth, with Smith being the only one among the top 5 who remains in the thick of the race. He has been backed by 7.2 percent of the money and 8.0 percent of the total bets, second behind only Manning’s 8.6 percent.

John Mateer’s injury props up new Heisman favorite

Fernando Mendoza, step on up, you are the newest Heisman Trophy favorite in a season that has seen five candidates rise to the top before the calendar hits October.

Following the news that Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer will undergo hand surgery that is expected to sideline him for a month, Mendoza suddenly is the Heisman favorite at most sportsbooks.

Barely on the Heisman radar when the season began a month ago, the Indiana quarterback vaulted into the conversation with a five-touchdown performance in last week’s 63-10 rout of Illinois. He was +900 on Monday, just behind Mateer at +700. With Mateer now sidelined, Mendoza is the +650 favorite at BetMGM.

Mateer had just separated himself from the pack with Oklahoma’s come-from-behind win at home against Auburn. He had been jockeying for the top spot with Miami’s Carson Beck, and they had followed preseason favorite Arch Manning from Texas along with LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier.

Mateer’s odds plummeted to +2000 with the injury news. Meanwhile, Oregon’s Dante Moore shifted to the No. 2 spot at +1000, followed by Beck at +1200. It also provided a boost to Jeremiah Smith, who has the shortest odds among non-quarterbacks. Ohio State’s wide receiver is now +1400, even with Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.

The book currently stands to do very well in the Heisman market, with the three biggest liabilities being Manning, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Manning leads all players with 13.2 percent of the money wagered backing him to win the award.

Mateer had garnered a lot of interest over the past few weeks and had become the book’s fourth biggest liability, just ahead of Nussmeier. None are currently among the top five favorites, with Nussmeier the only one among the top 10 at +!500.

DraftKings also is offering Mendoza as the new favorite at +700. He closely is followed by Moore (+850) ahead of Beck (+1200), Stockton (+1300) and Aguilar and Smith at +1400.

Carson Beck, John Mateer new Heisman favorites

Another week of the 2025 college football season has ushered in two new favorites in the Heisman Trophy race.

This time, it’s a pair of quarterbacks who headlined the offseason transfer portal circuit.

Miami’s Carson Beck has emerged as the +700 favorite at BetMGM ahead of Oklahoma’s John Mateer at +900. Yet another transfer, Oregon’s Dante Moore, is third at +1100. Meanwhile, DraftKings has Mateer (+800) slightly ahead of Beck at +900, with Moore being offered at +1200.

All three were in the Heisman picture to begin the season — Beck and Moore opened at +2000 at BetMGM while Mateer was +2500 — but have benefited from injuries and disappointing play impacting other early favorites.

That begins with Arch Manning, who opened the season as the +950 favorite to win the Heisman while also being the favorite to go No. 1 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, the Texas quarterback has struggled mightily during the Longhorns’ 2-1 start.

Manning is completing just 55.3 percent of his passes and said this week, “I know the type of player I am. I know I can be better. I know we can be better as an offense, so it’s time to get going.”

Manning has plummeted to the fringe of Heisman contention at +3500 at DraftKings. Those are the same odds as South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who owned the second-shortest odds at +700 to begin September.

After a breakout 2024 season, Sellers opened the season by throwing for 337 yards and a pair of touchdown passes in the Gamecocks’ 2-0 start. However, he was knocked out of last weekend’s loss to Vanderbilt with a concussion, leaving his status for Saturday’s game against Missouri in doubt.

Manning is +3000 at BetMGM, while Sellers has plummeted to +8000. Manning’s freefall could prove a big win for the book, which reported him leading with 14.3 percent of all money wagered on the Heisman market.

LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier was the early beneficiary of Manning’s struggles, rising to the Heisman favorite after Texas’ season-opening loss to Ohio State. The Tigers quarterback was +650 at the time but has struggled to get the vertical passing game rolling, perhaps due to a lingering torso issue that coach Brian Kelly acknowledged this week.

Nussmeier hasn’t fallen nearly as far as the other two as he still is tied for the fifth-shortest odds at +1500 at BetMGM. That’s the same as Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar and Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed, and just behind Georgia’s Gunner Stockton at +1200. Nussmeier has received the second-most support at the book, having been backed by 10.2 percent of all money wagered, ahead of Sellers at 8.6 percent.

The shortest non-quarterback odds belong to Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith at +1600.

Meanwhile, DraftKings is offering Nussmeier at +1300, followed by Smith (+1400) and Reed, Ohio State QB Julian Sayin and Stockton at +1500. Aguilar is +1600 at the book.

Georgia QB Carson Beck to try elbow treatment; P Brett Thorson out for season

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck seeks a rehabilitation and strengthening program for his throwing arm, but the Bulldogs’ outlook for the College Football Playoff at the position is unclear.

Beck had 11 touchdowns and no interceptions in the final month of the season to propel Georgia into the SEC Championship. He hurt his throwing arm on the final play of the first half and was replaced by sophomore Gunner Stockton. Stockton completed 12 of 16 passes for 71 yards with an interception to help the Bulldogs defeat Texas 22-19 in overtime.

Georgia did not confirm reports Beck suffered damage to the UCL in his right arm. But the Bulldogs did announce punter Brett Thorson, also injured Saturday in the SEC title game victory, is out for the season with a knee injury.

“Carson and Brett are both fierce competitors and extremely hard workers,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in a statement on Monday. “I’m confident they will attack their rehab with the same determination they exhibit in their daily habits. We will be here to support them every step of the way.”

Beck threw for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions as a senior in 2024, returning to school after considering jumping to the NFL last spring.

Thorson is a finalist for the Ray Guy Award given to the top punter in college football. He was carted to the locker room in the SEC Championship after attempting to corral Texas returner Silas Bolden in the third quarter.

A junior from Melbourne, Australia, Thorson averaged 47.6 yards per punt with only five touchbacks in 2024.

Smart said freshman Drew Miller, ranked as the top punter in last year’s class, would be ready to handle the punting chores in the Sugar Bowl.

Georgia loses QB Carson Beck (arm) during SEC title game

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck has been ruled out for the second half of Saturday’s SEC Championship Game against Texas after being injured on the final play of the first half.

Texas’ Trey Moore forced a fumble on Beck’s pass attempt, appearing to injure the Georgia quarterback’s throwing arm. Beck remained motionless on the field for a short time before joining the team in the locker room.

Coach Kirby Smart told ESPN at halftime that Beck was done for the day.

During the third quarter, Beck was seen with ice on his right elbow.

Beck completed 7 of 13 passes for 56 yards and was sacked once before exiting.

Georgia backup Gunner Stockton entered and led Georgia on a 10-play, 75-yard opening second-half drive, giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 10-6.

Bulldogs punter Brett Thorson injured his left knee in the third quarter and was ruled out of the contest. He was taken off on a cart.

Heisman Trophy Odds: Dillon Gabriel’s company moving in

The first full week of the college football season didn’t create a sea change in the Heisman Trophy picture, but Oregon’s lackluster victory over Idaho did help shrink the gap at the top.

Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel was the +750 favorite at DraftKings in July, but those odds lengthened a bit to +800 following the 24-14 victory that saw Oregon leading by only three points in the fourth quarter. Gabriel did finish the game with 380 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart has moved from +1400 to +850 right behind Gabriel. He’s followed by Georgia quarterback Carson Beck (+900), Miami quarterback Cam Ward (+950) and Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe (+1100).

Ward was one of the week’s biggest movers up the rankings after engineering the Hurricanes’ lopsided victory at Florida. He was an even bigger mover at FanDuel, where Ward is now one of the three-co favorites at +850 along with Gabriel and Dart.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier went the opposite direction, plummeting from +2200 to +3500 at DraftKings following the Tigers’ loss to Southern California. He has slightly shorter +3000 odds at FanDuel.

While Shedeur Sanders has the shortest odds among Colorado players at DraftKings, it’s dual-threat teammate Travis Hunter who carries that honor at +2500 at FanDuel. The two connected for three touchdowns in the Buffaloes’ 31-26 home win over North Dakota State.

Hunter is also being offered at +2500 at DraftKings, and has the shortest odds among non-quarterbacks at both sportsbooks.
