Reports: Colts re-sign S Julian Blackmon to 1-year deal

Safety Julian Blackmon is returning to the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year deal, ESPN and NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Blackmon’s new contract is worth up to $7.7 million, with $3.2 million guaranteed, per NFL Network’s report.

Blackmon was a free agent after his rookie contract expired. In four years with the Colts, he has compiled 214 tackles, seven interceptions, 17 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one sack.

In 2023, Blackmon set career highs in tackles (88), picks (four), pass breakups (eight) and starts (15). Per ESPN, Blackmon visited the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers but could not find a multi-year offer on the open market.

The Colts have re-signed or extended a number of players on defense in particular this offseason, with Blackmon joining linebacker Zaire Franklin, cornerback Kenny Moore II and defensive linemen Tyquan Lewis and Grover Stewart.

Colts activate Quenton Nelson, rule out T.Y. Hilton vs. 49ers

Indianapolis Colts left guard Quenton Nelson was activated off injured reserve on Saturday and is expected to play against San Francisco on Sunday night.

The Colts (2-4) also placed safety Julian Blackmon on injured reserve and ruled out wide receiver T.Y. Hilton for the road game against the 49ers (2-3).

Nelson, a three-time All-Pro, has missed the past three games with a high-ankle sprain.

Prior to the injury, Nelson started 51 consecutive games to begin his career after being taken by the Colts with the sixth overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. The 25-year-old has made the Pro Bowl in each season of his career so far.

Blackmon, 23, sustained a torn Achilles in practice on Wednesday.

He has 34 tackles (two for loss), one pass defended and one forced fumble in six starts in 2021.

The 2020 third-round pick stepped into a starting role when Malik Hooker injured his Achilles last season.

Hilton, 31, was placed on IR in early September after neck surgery. He made his season debut last Sunday and had four catches for 80 yards before sustaining a quadriceps injury in a 31-3 victory over the Houston Texans.

Hilton has 612 catches for 9,440 yards and 50 touchdowns in 134 career games with the Colts. He made the Pro Bowl four straight years from 2014-17.

Also on Saturday, the Colts elevated wide receiver Keke Coutee and safety Josh Jones to the active roster from the practice squad.

Colts S Julian Blackmon lands on IR with torn Achilles

Colts safety Julian Blackmon suffered a torn Achilles during practice on Wednesday and was placed on injured reserve.

Indianapolis has put 20 players on IR this season, including those designated to return.

The 2020 third-round pick stepped into a starting role when Malik Hooker injured his Achilles last season.

Until the injury report listed Blackmon on Wednesday as a limited participant, there was no previous sign of the injury.

Injuries have hit the Colts hard since training camp when guard Quenton Nelson, quarterback Carson Wentz, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and cornerback Xavier Rhodes all had limited availability.

Blackmon’s injury leaves the Colts with just three safeties on the roster: Andrew Sendejo, Khari Willis and George Odum.

Blackmon has 34 tackles (two for loss), one pass defended and one forced fumble in six games in 2021.
