Reports: OC Bobby Slowik, QB coach Jerrod Johnson stay with Texans

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson are both staying with the Houston Texans, multiple reports said Tuesday.

Teams had been attempting to snag Johnson as their new offensive coordinator, but he has told teams that he plans to return to Houston to continue working with head coach DeMeco Ryans, quarterback C.J. Stroud and Slowik.

Slowik, meanwhile, recently struck a new deal with the Texans, Sports Illustrated and ESPN reported. That contract includes a pay raise, keeping Slowik in Houston after he too had drawn interest from multiple teams across the league.

Earlier Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had announced that they completed an interview with Johnson for their offensive coordinator position. The New Orleans Saints were also reportedly in on Johnson.

The Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks were among the teams that were interested in Slowik. Atlanta hired Raheem Morris for its head-coaching position and the Panthers went with Dave Canales.

Houston is coming off a 10-7 season, finishing atop the AFC South to secure a playoff berth for the first time since the 2019 campaign. The Texans blew by the Cleveland Browns 45-14 in the wild-card round before falling 34-10 to the Baltimore Ravens.

Reports: Texans OC Bobby Slowik meeting with Falcons again

The Atlanta Falcons’ methodical search for their next head coach will continue Thursday with a second interview for Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, multiple outlets reported.

Slowik, 36, has been a hot candidate on the coaching circuit, interviewing with at least the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders for their jobs.

The Titans hired Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan on Wednesday.

Slowik had a virtual interview with the Falcons over the weekend and has been invited to Atlanta to meet with Falcons owner Arthur Blank, CEO Rich McKay and general manager Terry Fontenot at Blank’s home.

The Falcons have interviewed 14 candidates for the position, including former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel on Wednesday.

Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, is among the coaches to have interviewed twice with the Falcons.

The Falcons are looking to replace Arthur Smith, who was fired earlier this month after three 7-10 seasons.

Report: Texans OC Bobby Slowik set for 3 more head-coach interviews

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has three virtual interviews for head-coaching jobs set for Sunday, ESPN reported.

Slowik, 36, is set to interview with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons, per the report. He already has spoken with the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers about their open positions.

Slowik just completed his first season as an NFL offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans, who were eliminated from the postseason with a 34-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional round on Saturday.

Before joining new head coach DeMeco Ryans in Houston, Slowik spent six seasons on the staff of Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco. He started as a defensive quality control assistant in 2017 before rising to passing game coordinator.

In Houston, Slowik guided an offense led by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud as the Texans finished 10-7 and won the AFC South.

The Texans finished the regular season 12th in the NFL in total offense (342.4 yards per game), seventh in passing yards (245.5) and tied for 13th in points (22.2).

Texans OC Bobby Slowik ‘entirely locked in’ despite coaching rumors

In high demand after the Texans dismantled the Cleveland Browns — and the NFL’s No. 1 defense — in the AFC wild-card round, Houston offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik is focused on the Baltimore Ravens, not a possible head coaching position.

“Yeah, it’s the same as last week,” the 36-year-old Slowik told reporters Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s AFC divisional round matchup at Baltimore. “Very grateful for every consideration. Grateful for the opportunities. Grateful to (head coach) DeMeco (Ryans), to (general manager) Nick (Caserio), to the Texans organization for giving me this opportunity.

“But right now, I couldn’t tell you what’s going on. I’m entirely locked in on the Ravens. I know here pretty soon, that process is going to start pretty quick, but I’m going to cross that bridge when I get to it. Right now, I’m just (focused on) Baltimore.”

Along with the Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly have requested to interview Slowik — in his first season as an offensive coordinator — for their head coaching vacancy.

A feather in Slowik’s cap has been the play of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who threw 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions in helping guide Houston to the AFC South title.

“Bobby did a great job today, like he always does,” Ryans said after Saturday’s 45-14 blowout of the Browns. “His job is to call the plays. When he call, we ball. He knew to mix it up a little bit. We wanted to throw the ball early just to set the tone that we were going to not shy away from anything.”

Slowik, who began his coaching career under head coach Mike Shanahan in Washington in 2011 as a defensive assistant, later moved on to the San Francisco 49ers to join head coach Kyle Shanahan’s staff. With the 49ers, Slowik served a number of roles, including offensive assistant and passing game coordinator.

Report: Texans to hire Bobby Slowik as OC

The Houston Texans are hiring Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator, NFL Network reported Sunday morning.

Slowik and new Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans spent the past six seasons together with the San Francisco 49ers.

Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury also interviewed with the Texans for the role of offensive coordinator. The position was vacant after Houston opted against retaining Pep Hamilton after finishing 31st in total offense (283.5 yards per game) and tied for 30th in scoring offense (17.0 points) last season.

Slowik, 35, began his NFL coaching career as a video assistant and defensive assistant with the Washington franchise from 2011-13. He later joined the 49ers as a defense quality control coach in 2017 before becoming an offensive assistant in 2019.

Slowik was promoted to San Francisco’s offensive passing game specialist in 2021 and named the passing game coordinator in 2022.
