Cowboys place WR Brandin Cooks (knee) on IR

The Dallas Cowboys placed wide receiver Brandin Cooks on injured reserve Saturday due to a knee issue.

The infection followed a medical procedure Cooks had on the knee while remaining in New York after the Cowboys’ 20-15 victory over the Giants on Sept. 26.

The move will sideline Cooks for the next four games. He will be eligible to return for Dallas’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 10 in Arlington, Texas.

Wideouts Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin and Jalen Brooks will look to pick up the slack for the Cowboys (2-2) opposite star CeeDee Lamb.

Cooks has nine receptions on 19 targets for 91 yards and one touchdown in starting all four games this season.

He caught 54 passes for 657 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games (15 starts) in his first season with Dallas in 2023.

Cooks, 31, has 693 catches for 9,364 yards and 58 scores in 152 games (139 starts) with five teams since 2014. The Houston Texans traded him to Dallas for a fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and a sixth-rounder in 2024.

Also on Saturday, the Cowboys signed linebacker Nick Vigil to the 53-man roster. They also elevated cornerback Amani Oruwariye and defensive end Carl Lawson from the practice squad.

Reports: Texans trade Brandin Cooks, re-sign Laremy Tunsil

The Houston Texans are trading wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Dallas Cowboys for draft picks, NFL Network and ESPN reported Sunday.

The Texans will receive a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth-round selection in 2024, per the reports. The Texans also are expected to pay $6 million of Cooks’ $18 million guaranteed contract to facilitate the trade, per KPRC2 in Houston.

Houston also re-signed Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $75 million deal that once again makes him the highest-paid left tackle in NFL history, according to NFL Network.

Tunsil, 28, who represented himself, secured a contract that includes a $30 million signing bonus, $50 million fully guaranteed and $60 million in total guarantees, per the report.

Tunsil earned his third Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and started all 17 games. He has 94 starts in seven seasons with Houston and the Miami Dolphins (2016-18), who drafted him 13th overall in 2016.

Cooks, 29, caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 starts with the Texans in 2022.

A six-time 1,000-yard receiver, Cooks has 630 career receptions for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns in 132 games (120 starts) with the New Orleans Saints (2014-16), New England Patriots (2017), Los Angeles Rams (2018-19) and Texans. The Saints drafted him with the 20th pick in 2014.

Cooks replaces Noah Brown in Dallas. Brown, who agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans earlier this week, had 43 catches for 555 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games (13 starts) in 2022.

Reports: Texans WR Brandin Cooks out vs. Eagles

Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks reportedly will not play against the visiting Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, two days after the team failed to move him at the NFL trade deadline.

Multiple media reports said Cooks had hoped to be traded to a playoff contender.

Cooks did not practice on either Tuesday or Wednesday due to personal reasons.

Money may have been a possible snag to any deal involving Cooks. He is due $18 million fully guaranteed next season.

Cooks, 29, has team-leading totals in catches (32) and receiving yards (354) this season for the Texans (1-5-1), who are also without fellow wideout Nico Collins for Thursday’s game against the Eagles (7-0).

Collins, who is dealing with a groin injury, is second on the team with 305 receiving yards.

Cooks has 605 receptions for 8,271 yards and 47 scores in 126 career games with the New Orleans Saints (2014-16), New England Patriots (2017), Los Angeles Rams (2018-19) and Texans. He was selected by the Saints with the 20th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Report: Texans open to trading WR Brandin Cooks

The Houston Texans are listening to trade inquiries involving wide receiver Brandin Cooks, ESPN reported Sunday.

Per the report, the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and even one of Cooks’ former teams, the Los Angeles Rams, are potential landing spots for the wideout.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.

Money is a possible snag to any deal involving Cooks, however. He is due $18 million fully guaranteed next season.

Cooks, 29, has 28 catches for 281 yards and a touchdown this season in six games this season.

He has 601 receptions for 8,198 yards and 47 scores in 125 career games with the New Orleans Saints (2014-16), New England Patriots (2017), Rams (2018-19) and Texans. He was selected by the Saints with the 20th overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Report: WR Brandin Cooks returns to Texans on 2-year deal

After two seasons with the Houston Texans, wide receiver Brandin Cooks has committed to two more, agreeing to a deal with the team Thursday, NFL Network reported.

Terms of the deal were not reported.

Cooks, 28, had a career-best 90 receptions last season for 1,037 yards and six touchdowns as Houston was a disappointing 4-13. In two seasons with the Texans, he has 171 receptions for 2,187 yards and 12 TDs over 31 games.

In eight NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints (2014-16), New England Patriots (2017), Los Angeles Rams (2018-19) and Texans, the Oregon State product has 573 career receptions for 7,917 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Reports: Texans restructure contract of WR Brandin Cooks

The Houston Texans agreed to a restructured contract with wide receiver Brandin Cooks that will free up $6.5 million against the cap, NFL Network first reported Thursday.

The team converted $10 million of Cooks’ base salary ($12 million) to a signing bonus, adding $1 million to his contract over the next two seasons, per the report. The move also voids the final year of the deal which Cooks signed when he was with the Los Angeles Rams, making him a free agent after the 2022 season.

Cooks had 81 receptions for 1,150 yards last season, his fifth time topping 1,000 yards. He hauled in six touchdowns in 2020, his first season in Houston after the team acquired him in a trade with the Rams.

Houston is Cooks’ fourth team since he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2014. He also played one season in New England (2017). He has 40 career touchdowns.

Week 12 Fantasy Disappointments

The fantasy football season is filled with disappointment, but poor performances from star players are becoming more costly as we get closer to the end of the year. One bad game from a normally reliable player may be the difference between making or missing the playoffs in your fantasy league. These are the three players that disappointed their fantasy owners the most in Week 12 of the 2016 NFL season.
Brandin Cooks
Brandin Cooks had the perfect opportunity to succeed when he got to play a struggling Rams defense at home in New Orleans. While Drew Brees and the Saints had a great offensive game, Cooks was nowhere to be found. The top receiver on the Saints failed to get one catch in a game that saw the team score 49 points. Nearly every offensive player on the New Orleans Saints helped their fantasy owners in Week 12 expect Brandin Cooks. The star wide receiver, who is considered one of the fastest players in the NFL,  recently expressed his frustrations over his role in the offense. These comments usually forces the coaching staff to get a player more involved, so it would not be surprising to see Cooks have a few huge games before the end of the season.
Antonio Gates
Antonio Gates was given a difficult matchup when he had to go up against the Houston Texans in Week 12, but fantasy football players still expected a decent performance from the great tight end. Gates was coming off his two best games of the season, and he had scored a touchdown in three straight games before Week 12. Just like Brandin Cooks, Antonio Gates went the entire game without getting a pass thrown in his direction. Backup tight end Hunter Henry’s touchdown late in the game just added more salt in the wound for Gates’ fantasy owners. This game may cause some people to abandon Antonio Gates, but the aging tight end has a great schedule coming up. If he returns to his normal role in the offense, then Gates should find a way to score a few more touchdowns this season.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson was coming off three straight great games after finally fully healing from his ankle injury, but he produced his worst game of the season in Week 12. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense had Wilson under constant pressure, so the great quarterback never had much time to find an open receiver. Since Wilson was forced to only throw short passes, he finished the game with 151 yards. Nearly all of Wilson’s fantasy points in Week 12 came from his 80 rushing yards. The Seattle Seahawks have a very favorable schedule the rest of the season, so Wilson should be a top-tier fantasy quarterback in Week 13 and beyond.
