Jets wrap up RB Breece Hall with franchise tag

Jets general manager Darren Mougey was true to his commitment to keep running back Breece Hall in New York, applying the franchise tag before the NFL deadline on Tuesday.

Hall and the Jets have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term contract, which the team said last week at the NFL Scouting Combine was the priority for both sides.

“Ideally, we’d find a way to get a deal done and keep Breece around,” Mougey said last week. “I think I’ve said that for the last year since I’ve got here. Breece is a good player. We want to find a way to keep him around.”

If a contract extension isn’t reached, Hall would receive a one-year salary of $14.293 million for 2026.

Hall, 24, rushed for 3,398 yards and 18 touchdowns in his first four seasons since the Jets selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Iowa State. He amassed a career-high 1,065 yards in 2025, becoming the first Jet since 2015 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards. He was retained at the trade deadline despite New York shipping off a number of other top players.

Jets plan to use franchise tag on RB Breece Hall if deal not reached

New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey made it clear the team intends to retain Breece Hall one way or another this offseason.

The Jets plan to use either the franchise tag or transition tag on their standout running back if a long-term deal can’t be reached by the March 3 deadline, Mougey said on Tuesday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

“We’ll find a way to keep Breece here if we can’t get a deal done,” Mougey said.

Hall, 24, has rushed for 3,398 yards and 18 touchdowns in four seasons since the Jets selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Iowa State. He amassed a career-high 1,065 yards in 2025, becoming the first Jet since 2015 to surpass 1,000 rushing yards. He was retained at the trade deadline despite New York shipping off a number of other top players.

The franchise tag, which pays a player a one-year deal at the rate of the average of the top five salaries at his position, would be worth $14.5 million for Hall in 2026. The transition tag, which pays the average of the top 10 positional salaries, would be worth approximately $11.7 million.

The difference between the two is that the Jets would not be eligible for draft compensation on a transition tag should they elect not to match an offer from another team to Hall.

Even if the Jets were to tag Hall, the two sides could continue to work toward a new contract up until July 15, at which point he would play under the tag and be a pending free agent once more next offseason.

Also on Friday, Ulbrich said linebacker C.J. Mosley will be placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury that he sustained in the Jets’ 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 20.

Rookie running back Braelon Allen likely will see more carries should Hall sit out against the Dolphins (5-7) on Sunday.

Jets taking snap restrictions off RB Breece Hall

The New York Jets are lifting the snap count restrictions on running back Breece Hall heading into Week 5.

Jets coach Robert Saleh told reporters Wednesday that they will no longer throttle the workload of Hall, who tore his ACL nearly one year ago.

“There’s no pitch count with him anymore,” Saleh said. “We’d love to get him going.”

Hall, 22, touched the ball just nine times (six rushes, three catches) in last week’s 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s averaging eight rushes per game in four starts so far. He’s rushed for 210 yards so far at a clip of 6.6 yards per carry.

“He’s in a great mindset,” Saleh said Wednesday. “I will say this — he ran violently last week in practice and it felt like it carried over to the game. You can tell he’s starting to get his legs underneath him. Even though he’s had production, he hasn’t reached what he’s capable of and what he’s shown in the past.”

Hall ran for 463 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in seven games in 2022 before his rookie season ended with a torn ACL against the Denver Broncos on Oct. 23. The second-round pick from Iowa State also caught 19 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown in 2022.

The Jets (1-3) play the Broncos (1-3) this Sunday in Denver.

New Jets RB Dalvin Cook sees ‘something special’ in NY

New Jets running back Dalvin Cook turned down a chance to play near his home and teamed up with former division rival Aaron Rodgers for a chance to win big in New York.

“Being on the other side the last six years, I couldn’t be on the other side anymore,” Cook said with a laugh of being a teammate of Rodgers after battling him in the NFC North.

Cook was released by the Minnesota Vikings and Rodgers was traded to the Jets from the Green Bay Packers.

“When I came on my visit, I think I saw everything I needed to see. I think I can come help these guys,” Cook said Thursday after his first full practice with the team. “When you look at the running back room with M.C. (Michael Carter), Breece (Hall), Bam (Zonovan Knight) and all those guys, with me just adding to it, I think it could be something special.”

Rodgers said Wednesday the offensive line was “a work in progress,” noting the “beauty and struggle” is finding continuity up front.

“You’ve got to run the ball to win in this league. You need multiple guys to get it done,” Rodgers said. “He made it well known to me in the process he wanted to play with me, come to Jersey.”

Cook, 28, visited with the Jets last month and showed interest in the Miami Dolphins. He was linked to yet another AFC East team, the New England Patriots, who wound up signing free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott.

Cook was slated to earn $11 million in 2023 with Minnesota, where he rushed for 5,024 yards and 43 touchdowns the past four seasons.

In 73 career games (72 starts) since the Vikings drafted him in the second round in 2017, Cook has 5,993 rushing yards, 47 rushing touchdowns, 221 receptions, 1,794 receiving yards and five TD catches.

He is coming off surgery on Feb. 14, the latest in a series of major shoulder issues that include a dislocated shoulder and torn labrum.
