Reports: NC State QB MJ Morris to redshirt remainder of season

North Carolina State starting quarterback MJ Morris has decided to take off the rest of the season to preserve his eligibility to redshirt, multiple outlets reported Tuesday.

His father, Eddie Morris, seemed to confirm the reports, telling television station WRAL in Raleigh, N.C., that he won’t be looking to transfer.

“No one said he is leaving the program,” Eddie Morris told WRAL. “Nobody said he is leaving the program. If he would have left the program, he would have left in January and he would have left in May. He had plenty of options.”

MJ Morris, a sophomore, has played in four games — all starts — since he replaced Virginia transfer Brennan Armstrong at quarterback in the sixth game of the season. Four is the maximum number of games a player can appear in before losing the redshirt.

Armstrong reportedly is taking reps with the first team in practice and is poised to return to the starting role.

Head coach Dave Doeren discussed his positive impressions of Morris with the media on Monday after he led the Wolfpack to a 20-6 win over Miami on Saturday.

“He’s very confident. He’s comfortable. He throws a catchable ball. He’s tough,” Doeren said. “The game continues to slow down for him. There’s little things within routes where you see something in a coverage and maybe you can help yourself with your eyes on things like that.

“It is a game that requires so much. The more you play it, the better you get. He’s 3-1 as a starter. He’s really worked hard. I know he’ll continue to grow and get better.”

North Carolina State (6-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) faces conference rival Wake Forest on the road on Saturday.

Under Morris, the Wolfpack are averaging 179.75 passing yards per game. He is 63-of-113 passing (55.75 percent) for 719 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.

In eight games (five starts), Armstrong is 94-of-160 passing for 971 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. He is averaging 121.38 yards per game.

Armstrong, however, is the leading rusher for NC State. He has gained 337 yards and scored three TDs.

NC State now has just two scholarship quarterbacks available for the rest of the season — Armstrong and Lex Thomas, a freshman who has yet to play for the Wolfpack.

NC State benching QB Brennan Armstrong, to start MJ Morris

NC State will start sophomore quarterback MJ Morris in place of graduate transfer Brennan Armstrong this Saturday against Marshall, coach Dave Doeren announced Monday.

Morris was rated a four-star high school prospect by Rivals and a three-star by 247Sports in the Class of 2022.

He saw the field as a true freshman when starter Devin Leary went down with injury. He helped the Wolfpack beat Virginia Tech and Wake Forest before being injured the next week against Boston College.

Morris finished 2022 with 648 yards, seven touchdowns, one interception and one rushing touchdown while completing 60.5 percent of his passes.

Armstrong appeared in parts of five seasons for Virginia (2018-22) and threw for 4,449 yards and 31 touchdowns during the 2021 campaign. After a lackluster 2022, he transferred to NC State to use his remaining eligibility, but has struggled through five games.

Armstrong has thrown for 971 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions with a 58.8 completion percentage. NC State has gone 3-2 (1-1 ACC) and ranks 94th in FBS in passing yards per game (214.8) and tied for 88th in scoring offense (25.4 ppg).

Reports: Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong enters transfer portal

Three-year Virginia starting quarterback Brennan Armstrong has entered the transfer portal, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

Armstrong enters as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining thanks to the NCAA’s COVID exception from 2020. He also took a redshirt in 2018.

Armstrong thew for 2,210 yards and seven touchdowns against 12 interceptions this past season under first-year head coach Tony Elliott. The Cavaliers eschewed playing the final two games following the tragic shooting deaths of three players last month and finished 3-7 overall.

Armstrong led the Atlantic Coast Conference with 4,449 passing yards and threw 31 touchdowns in 2021.

He leaves Charlottesville with the school’s career records for passing yards (9,034) and touchdown passes (58). He also rushed for 1,267 yards and 20 TDs for his career.

Red-hot QB Brennan Armstrong leads Virginia into Miami

Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong has passed for at least 400 yards in three straight games.

The only other ACC passer to accomplish that feat in the past decade was Mitch Trubisky in 2016. He went on to become an NFL first-round selection.

On Thursday night, the offensively potent Cavaliers (2-2) will visit the Miami Hurricanes (2-2).

Miami’s star quarterback, D’Eriq King, is not expected to play due to an injured throwing shoulder. Still, King has not been ruled out.

“He’s improving and feeling better every day,” Miami coach Manny Diaz said.

Miami, which has won its past two matchups against Virginia, is a four-point favorite against the Cavaliers. However, with King hurt and Armstrong hot, consider this an early upset alert.

After all, Armstrong leads the nation’s top passing offense (430.5 yards per game).

“He’s hitting people in the facemask,” Diaz said of Armstrong. “His accuracy jumps off the film.”

Virginia started the season by routing William & Mary and Illinois before falling 59-39 to North Carolina on Sept. 18 and 37-17 to Wake Forest six days later.

Armstrong, a fourth-year junior, threw for a career-high 405 yards against Illinois on Sept. 11 and followed that up with a school-record 554 yards passing versus UNC.

As a first-year starter last year, Armstrong completed 58.6 percent of his passes for 2,117 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

This year, he has thrown just three picks so far and increased his completion percentage to 66.7 percent. He also has 13 scoring passes and is a threat to run, as evidenced by his team-high 552 rushing yards last season.

The Cavaliers have dropped five in a row in Miami since last winning there in 2011.

“The urgency is definitely there,” said Virginia wide receiver Keytaon Thompson, who is playing with a cast due to a fractured hand.

There is pressure on Miami, too, especially after ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit blasted the program last week, saying football was not a priority for school president Julio Frenk. Diaz started his press conference Monday by denying that charge.

But the Hurricanes have been unimpressive this year in losses to Alabama and Michigan State, as well as in a two-point win over Appalachian State.

Last Saturday, the Hurricanes played without King and ripped overmatched Central Connecticut, 69-0.

“One game doesn’t absolve us from the performances of our first three weeks,” Diaz said. “I’m responsible for that.”

For all the criticism — both nationally and locally — the Hurricanes still have a shot at winning the wide-open ACC.

If King is unable to play Thursday, the Hurricanes are expected to start second-year freshman Tyler Van Dyke, who completed 10 of 11 passes for 270 yards and three scores last week. True freshman quarterback Jake Garcia is also expected to play.

Three true freshmen — Brashard Smith, Romello Brinson and Jacolby George — each caught one touchdown pass a week ago. The Hurricanes also got an interception from true freshman safety James Williams, who was a five-star recruit.

“Saturday’s game was a commercial for our past two recruiting classes,” Diaz said. “Those classes don’t happen without us increasing the resources and support from our administration for what it takes to win here.”

Virginia names Armstrong as starting QB

Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall named redshirt sophomore Brennan Armstrong as the Cavaliers’ starting quarterback on Thursday.

Armstrong got the nod over Keytaon Thompson, a graduate transfer from Mississippi State, and replaces two-year starter Bryce Perkins. Perkins signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Armstrong appeared in 11 games over the past two seasons, completing 17 of 25 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns and rushing 16 times for 93 yards.

He will be the first left-handed quarterback to start for the Cavaliers since Jameel Sewell (2006-09).

Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound redshirt junior, appeared in 20 games for the Bulldogs from 2017-19 and was 2-0 as a starter. He completed 50 of 105 passes for 846 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed 99 times for 672 yards and 10 scores.

He has two years of eligibility remaining.

Virginia, which won the ACC’s Coastal Division title last season, is scheduled to open the 2020 campaign on Sept. 19 at rival Virginia Tech.
