Panthers QB Bryce Young full participant despite hamstring listing

The Carolina Panthers listed quarterback Bryce Young as having a hamstring injury on the practice report released Wednesday, although he reportedly was a full participant on the field the day before.

Young, the first pick in the 2023 draft, is averaging 206.3 yards per game and has thrown for 10 touchdowns over his last eight games. The Alabama product was benched after two poor starts to begin the season and did not play in three of the next five games.

Young started 16 of the Panthers’ 17 games as a rookie last season, completing 59.8 percent of his passes for 2,877 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also threw 10 interceptions.

Young has nine interceptions this season, but only six during his return to the starting role. He played the entire game on Sunday as the Panthers outlasted visiting Arizona 36-30 in overtime. Young went 17 of 26 passing for 158 yards and two touchdowns with no picks.

Running back Chuba Hubbard (rest) did not participate on Tuesday. The players had the day off on Christmas.

The Panthers (4-11) visit fellow NFC South foe Tampa Bay (8-7) on Sunday.

Panthers name QB Bryce Young starter in Munich

The Carolina Panthers week-to-week decision-making at quarterback continues with Bryce Young given the start for this week’s game against the New York Giants in Munich, Germany.

It will be the third straight start for Young after getting benched in favor of Andy Dalton in Week 3. Dalton started five games before injuring his wrist in a car accident, thrusting Young back into the starting role without a long-term commitment about his status in that spot.

“This is about progress from one week to the next,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Wednesday.

Young earned his first win as the starter last week, throwing for 171 yards and a touchdown and an interception in a 23-22 win over the New Orleans Saints.

Young has struggled through his first 22 games as a pro since being the No. 1 overall pick of the Panthers in the 2023 draft, amassing 14 TDs against 16 INTs. He’s 3-17 as the starter overall.

The Giants and Panthers take 2-7 records to Germany, where Brian Daboll continues to be asked on a weekly basis if Daniel Jones is still New York’s starter.

Daboll said “nothing changes” when asked again Monday if Jones was his QB1 in Germany.

Jones was 20 of 26 for 174 yards with two touchdowns and 54 rushing yards and a touchdown last week against Washington.

Top 10 Player Props for NFL Week 9

The slate of games on deck for NFL Week 9 does not feature too many (any?) intriguing matchups, but that doesn’t mean bettors should take the week off. However, they may want to focus on some of the many player props on offer. With sportsbooks carrying a couple hundred per game, bettors will have plenty to choose from.

But with 13 games scheduled for Sunday, sportsbooks will have well over a couple thousand markets to choose from. So, where do you start? You start with our top 10 player props list for Week 9 of the NFL season.

NFL Week 9: Player Props

The following are our top 10 player prop picks for Week 9 of the NFL season (Sunday games). These will not be in any particular order, and the odds will be via FanDuel unless otherwise stated. However, we do suggest you line shop and make sure you get the best odds for whichever ones you choose to bet on.

Alvin Kamara, O/U 67.5 Rushing Yards at -114/-114

Alvin Kamara, O/U 15.5 rushing attempts at -120/-110 (via DraftKings)

Kamara has averaged just 10 carries per game the last three weeks with Spencer Rattler at quarterback, but we expect that to change with Derek Carr coming back to face the Panthers. In the first four games of the season (with Carr at QB), Kamara got 15, 20, 26 and 19 carries.

To take the pressure off Carr as he returns from injury, the Saints will give their multitalented running back plenty of touches. Against the worst run defense in the league (154.6 ypg allowed; 171.3 ypg allowed over their last three), he’ll probably blow past 67.5 yards in the first half.

Our Picks: OVER 67.5 rushing yards and 15.5 rush attempts

Bryce Young, O/U 18.5 Pass Completions at -135/+105

Against the Saints in Week 1, Young had 13 completions (30 attempts). In Week 2, he had 18 (26 attempts), and in his return to the starting lineup last week, he completed 24 of 37 passes. The Saints have been allowing 22.4 per week and 20 in their previous three games.

Having beaten the Panthers once already this season and hungry for another win, the Saints’ defense will take charge in this game. They’ll rattle Young from the start and not let up.

Our Pick: UNDER 18.5 completions for +105

Dak Prescott, O/U 37.5 Passing Attempts at +100/-130

The Dallas run game has been truly terrible this season, leaving the Cowboys no choice but to throw a lot. Prescott has attempted more than 37.5 passes in four of seven games this season and averages 37.4. Opponents are averaging 33.6 per game against Atlanta this season and 39 attempts per game over the last three.

Once the Falcons get out to a comfortable lead at the half, Mike McCarthy will abandon the run in the second. Dak may surpass 37.5 attempts before the fourth quarter.

Our Pick: OVER 37.5 pass attempts for Dak Prescott.

Derrick Henry, O/U 18.5 Rushing Attempts at -114/-114

Derrick Henry, O/U 86.5 Rushing Yards at +104/-135

When the Ravens review the game film for last week’s loss to the Browns, they will see one issue on offense that can be easily rectified. Henry did not touch the ball enough (11 carries), hence his lowest rushing total since Week 1.

He’s had between 15 and 24 attempts since Week 2 with more than 18.5 in three (all wins that saw him run for 100+ yards). Denver has a tough defense; teams have been averaging 26.5 this season against them for 106.4 ypg (98 ypg allowed over their last three). Jackson will take some of those carries, but after losing last week, they’ll try to get back to their bread and butter this week.

Our Pick: OVER 18.5 attempts and 86.5 rushing yards

Kyren Williams, O/U 20.5 Rush Attempts at -110/-120

Kyren Williams, O/U 91.5 Rushing Yards at -115/-115

The Rams have been leaning on their young running back the last few weeks, giving him the ball 22, 21 and 23 times, and he has not disappointed as he’s gone for 102, 76 and 97 yards. Teams have been averaging 30 rush attempts (148.3 yards) against the Seahawks this season, 33 per game over their last three (182.3 ypg allowed).

Los Angeles would be foolish not to feed Williams against a defense struggling against the run.

Our Pick(s): OVER 20.5 rushes and 91.5 yards (odds via DraftKings)

Khalil Shakir, O/U 4.5 Total Receptions at -128/-102

Khalil Shakir, O/U 51.5 Receiving Yards at -114/-114

Shakir has been the go-to guy for Josh Allen the last two weeks with 16 receptions on 17 targets for 107 and 65 yards. Allen had a relatively quiet day against the Dolphins when these teams played back in Week 2 (13-for-19 for 139 yards and one touchdown), but Shakir caught all five of his targets for 54 yards.

Our Picks: Take the OVER for both markets.

Bryce Young looks to provide spark as Panthers visit Broncos

The Carolina Panthers are going through another quarterback change with Bryce Young returning to a starting role for Sunday’s road game against the Denver Broncos.

The Panthers hope this works out better for the second-year pro, who was benched last month. Young was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Alabama, but he mostly has struggled with Carolina.

“He has been an absolute stud during this process,” Panthers coach Dave Canales said. “He has been engaged. … The guys have been supportive of Bryce, see how hard he has been working.”

The Broncos (4-3) have been concentrating on themselves, coach Sean Payton said. Yet the changes involving Carolina might cause a shift in approach from a defensive standpoint.

“Certainly we have to study the opponent, but our preparation (and) all the things we have to do to get ready to play games, to play our best game, is what the focal point will be,” Payton said.

The Panthers (1-6), trying to shake a four-game losing streak, are the lone NFC team without at least two victories.

Andy Dalton started the past five games for the Panthers, winning the first of those.

Young played the final series of Carolina’s loss last week at Washington, marking his second brief appearance since he lost his starting role. Canales said Monday that Dalton would remain the starter, but there were developments since then.

Dalton was involved in an automobile accident Tuesday that didn’t require hospitalization. He wasn’t in full practice mode Wednesday, suffering from a sprained thumb, Canales said.

With Denver’s Bo Nix taking snaps, the Panthers will encounter another rookie as the starting quarterback. They’ve already faced Chicago’s Caleb Williams and Washington’s Jayden Daniels.

Nix has been mobile and making plays with his legs and his arm. He’s the team’s second-leading rusher, while he has thrown for five touchdowns with five interceptions.

“It does give you some flexibility, particularly on third down or in the red zone,” Payton said.

The Broncos are 1-2 at home this year. The visit from Carolina will be Denver’s lone home outing in a four-game stretch.

“Being more consistent,” Payton said of the key component. “Obviously taking advantage of playing in front of our own fans, the crowd noise — all those things that can help you win.”

The Panthers have been blowout victims in several of their losses. Canales has maintained an optimistic tone.

“I know that hard times build perseverance,” he said.

The Broncos could have cornerback Patrick Surtain II out of the concussion protocol after he has missed time, including last week’s game. Denver linebacker Cody Barton is the reigning AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Carolina receiver Adam Thielen and safety Jordan Fuller — both out with hamstring injuries — were designated to return from injured reserve this week, making it possible they could be on the field Sunday.

“We have to make sure they can have a good, solid week of practice and then we’ll make decisions,” Canales said.

Payton is familiar with the Panthers as a former divisional rival when he was longtime coach of the New Orleans Saints. The Broncos have defeated NFC teams Tampa Bay and New Orleans this year. The 33-10 rout of the Saints came in Denver’s most recent game.

For the second time in three games, Carolina is facing an opponent whose previous game came on a Thursday night, so the foe has had a few extra days between games compared to the Panthers.

QB Bryce Young ‘grateful’ to be on Panthers, pledges to improve

Quarterback Bryce Young pledged to help the Carolina Panthers any way he can, though the former starter will be watching from the sidelines when the team plays the host Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Young, addressing his demotion from earlier this week, took responsibility on Thursday for his play after being lauded as the franchise quarterback since he was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

“I had a lot of plays last year and in the first two games,” Young told reporters during locker room availability. “For the most part, every snap hit my hands and I didn’t do enough. I take accountability for that. There’s a long list of things that I wish was better and I’ll continue to work and grow and improve and be better at.

“Everyone has circumstances. If I went out there and played better and won games … and at the end of the day that falls on me and that didn’t happen … we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

The Panthers (0-2) lost 26-3 to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, leaving the second-year quarterback with just two wins in 18 NFL starts.

Young, 23, has completed 55.4 percent of his passes this year for 245 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Last year, he connected on 59.8 percent of his attempts for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 picks as the team went 2-15.

First-year head coach Dave Canales announced Monday that veteran Andy Dalton has moved up to first string after initially saying that Young remained the starter following Sunday’s loss. Young admitted Thursday that he was caught by surprise by the benching.

“It was not something that I necessarily I was expecting,” Young said. “Obviously, not something that was great to hear.

“But I respect coach Canales, I respect the organization. They made the decision. … Right now that’s the situation that it is. I have to do everything I can to help the team in whatever way I can.”

That means running the scout team and mimicking Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew to get the Panthers defense prepared for Sunday.

“I’m a day-by-day kind of person,” Young said. “I’ve talked about that consistently. Big picture stuff, that’s out of my hands. That’s organizational stuff, for the people upstairs. I’m super grateful to be part of the team, with our organization. I want to help in every way I can.”

Canales said Wednesday that the Panthers are not looking to trade Young, a Heisman Trophy winner who had great success at Alabama but little since his arrival in the NFL. Young said his future in the league is for others to decide, but the 5-foot-10, 204-pounder believes he can succeed at this level.

“I have confidence in myself,” Young said. “I’ve always had confidence in myself. Again, it’s a day-to-day thing. I always feel like at the end of the day I’m a competitor. Whenever there’s a football and there’s a field out there, I have the utmost confidence in myself.

“It’s been great with these guys too, having teammates I can lean on as well. That’s not something that’s going to waver. Again, what the circumstances are, what happens, that’s up for God to decide. That’s out of my hands.”

Carolina traded up prior to the 2023 draft with the Chicago Bears to select Young. Standout receiver D.J. Moore was sent to the Bears, who also used the 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick obtained in the deal to select quarterback Caleb Williams.

Panthers coach: Bryce Young isn’t being shopped

Bryce Young is no longer Carolina’s starting quarterback, but the Panthers aren’t ready to send him packing.

That was the message Wednesday from Carolina coach Dave Canales, who announced two days earlier that veteran Andy Dalton would start this week against the host Las Vegas Raiders.

Young and Panthers (0-2) lost 26-3 to the visiting Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, leaving the second-year quarterback with just two wins in 18 NFL starts. Carolina selected the former Heisman Trophy winner from Alabama with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.

Asked whether the Panthers are ready to deal Young to another team, Canales said, “That’s not something we’re really considering. We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now with guys that have experience. We love where we are at, and it’s all hands on deck.”

Canales praised Young’s effort on Wednesday as the No. 2 quarterback.

“Right back to work,” the coach said. “He dove into the game plan. We had our conversations in the QB room, talking about reads, about what we see from the defense. He followed it up with a great day on the field, some fantastic throws.

“He just got right back to work, which is exactly what I expected.”

The coach added regarding Young’s future, “This is a developmental-minded program, so the development didn’t stop (when he was removed from the starting role). Every rep he’s out there, we’re evaluating the whole thing, having conversations and continuing to push all of our guys, including Bryce, to take the next step.”

Young, 23, has completed 55.4 percent of his passes this year for 245 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Last year, he connected on 59.8 percent of his attempts for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 picks.

Dalton, 36, spent nine seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals’ starter and has since started games for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and Carolina. The three-time Pro Bowler has attempted just one pass this year, and it was incomplete.

Reports: Panthers benching QB Bryce Young

The Carolina Panthers are benching former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young and promoting Andy Dalton to starting quarterback after two weeks, NFL Network and ESPN reported Monday.

The Panthers (0-2) have scored a combined 13 points in their first two games under new head coach Dave Canales. Young threw for just 84 yards on 26 pass attempts in Sunday’s 26-3 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. He also tossed an interception.

Young became just the third player in the past 20 seasons to average 4 or fewer yards per pass play in four straight starts, according to ESPN. He has zero touchdowns against three INTs in two games this season.

Canales said after the game that Young would remain the team’s starter in Week 3 at Las Vegas (1-1). He changed his mind less than 24 hours later.

Dalton, 36, is a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback with a record of 83-78-2 in 14 seasons. He has backed up Young, 23, for the past two seasons in Carolina.

Dalton has thrown for 38,511 yards and 246 TDs against 144 INTs for five teams, most notably the Cincinnati Bengals (2011-19), who drafted him in the second round in 2011.

Panthers rookie QB Bryce Young to start vs. Vikings

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young will start this weekend’s game against the visiting Minnesota Vikings, coach Frank Reich announced Friday.

Young, the top overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, sat out last Sunday due to a sprained ankle. He watched as Andy Dalton guided the Panthers, who lost 37-27 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Young, however, has been a full participant in practice each day this week and does not have an injury designation headed into Sunday’s contest between a pair of 0-3 teams.

“Bryce will be our quarterback. He’s had a good week of practice, so it’s full steam ahead,” Reich said.

Young, 22, has completed 42 of 71 pass attempts for 299 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in two games with the Panthers.

Carolina running back Miles Sanders (groin), wide receiver Jonathan Mingo (concussion) and linebacker Frankie Luvu (hip) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Safety Xavier Woods (hamstring) is listed as out.

Panthers QB Bryce Young energized, ready to play Sunday

Bryce Young didn’t just participate in Wednesday’s workout, he delivered his best practice of the year, Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown said.

“Yesterday, I told him, was probably his best day. The energy, enthusiasm, stepping into a huddle, calling the plays with conviction, coaching those guys up from a receiver standpoint, the O-line up front,” Brown said Thursday, elaborating on his declaration. “Just kind of being the maestro, if you will, when it comes to the offense.”

Young said he won’t have any issues returning to the starting lineup on Sunday.

Young, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, watched Andy Dalton run the show in a loss at Seattle. Young went 0-2 in the first two games of the season and was out against the Seahawks due to a sprained ankle.

Young has completed 42 of 71 pass attempts for 299 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions with the Panthers.

He said a different perspective, that of an observer watching the veteran Dalton interact and energize the offense, gave him a big boost.

“We talked about increasing our energy and tempo,” Young said. “I definitely did take that to heart.”

Young said he couldn’t recall if he’d played on a team that lost three consecutive games before. He posted a 24-3 record as the starting quarterback at Alabama.

This week, the Panthers (0-3) play the winless Vikings (0-3).

“You have to process it and understand it for what it is,” Young said. “Of course, it’s not the start we wanted, but nothing is going to change that.”
