Texans rookie QB C.J. Stroud clears concussion protocol

Houston Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud said Thursday that he has cleared concussion protocol and expects to start Sunday’s game versus the visiting Tennessee Titans.

“I feel great, I feel really good. I feel back to myself, which was the biggest thing,” Stroud said.

Stroud, who was a full participant in practice Thursday, has missed Houston’s last two games while in concussion protocol.

In his absence, the Case Keenum-led Texans (8-7) defeated the Titans on the road in overtime in Week 15 before losing by 14 points at home against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Stroud, 22, was injured in the fourth quarter of Houston’s Week 14 loss to the New York Jets when his head bounced off the turf after a hit by defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.

Stroud, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, led the NFL in passing yards (3,631) and had the fifth-best passer rating (98.7) in the league at the time of his injury in Week 14.

The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite has completed 62.4 percent of his passes with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions in 13 starts. Stroud has also rushed for 143 yards and three scores.

The Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars all have 8-7 records in the AFC South.

Report: RB Anderson retires after seven NFL seasons

Running back C.J. Anderson is retiring after a seven-year NFL playing career, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday.

Schefter added that Anderson, 29, is looking into a coaching career in college football, likely with a Power 5 program.

Anderson entered the league with the Broncos in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of California. Denver reached Super Bowl XLVIII in Anderson’s rookie season, though the back had just seven rushes for 38 yards in that campaign. The Broncos lost to Seattle in the title game.

The 5-foot-8 Anderson earned a Pro Bowl nod after leading the team with 849 rushing yards during the 2014 season. He captured a Super Bowl ring following the 2015 campaign after the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

Anderson recorded a career-best 1,007 rushing yards in 2017 before being released in 2018.

He spent his last two seasons with the Rams, Panthers and Detroit Lions, with his late stint with Los Angeles resulting in his third Super Bowl appearance in the 2018 season. He posted 34 yards from scrimmage in the Rams’ 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

Anderson tweeted that he was “done with ball” on Dec. 23 of last year after a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks that day.

Anderson totaled 3,497 rushing yards, 900 receiving yards and 27 total touchdowns (22 rushing, five receiving) in 71 career games.

Bengals TE Uzomah tears Achilles, out for season

Cincinnati Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a torn right Achilles in the fourth quarter of the team’s 35-30 setback to the Cleveland Browns.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor made the announcement on Friday morning, one day after the Bengals fell to 0-2 on the season.

Uzomah, 27, caught a 5-yard pass from rookie Joe Burrow before his lower right leg awkwardly twitched as his foot hit the ground. He was removed from the field via the cart with about eight minutes remaining.

Uzomah had four catches for 42 yards and one touchdown in the game. The touchdown was the first in the NFL career of Burrow, who was the first overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Second-year player Drew Sample is expected to see additional playing time following the loss of Uzomah, who has 114 receptions for 1,098 yards and eight touchdowns in 63 career games with the Bengals.

Sample, 24, has eight receptions for 52 yards in two games this season. He has 13 catches for 82 yards in 11 games during his career.
