Report: Iowa QB Cade McNamara to transfer, seek seventh season

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara will re-enter the NCAA transfer portal and petition the NCAA for a seventh season of eligibility, ESPN reported Wednesday.

McNamara transferred to Iowa before the 2023 season but tore his left ACL in the fifth game. He started eight games in 2024 before a concussion in the Oct. 26 game against Northwestern caused him to miss the rest of the regular season.

Over his 13 games with the Hawkeyes, McNamara completed 57.3 percent of his pass attempts for 1,522 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Before Iowa, McNamara spent four seasons at Michigan. He appeared in only three games for the Wolverines in 2022 because of a knee injury and could seek to have a season reinstated for a medical redshirt.

The NCAA would need to grant a waiver for McNamara to play in 2025.

McNamara, a Nevada native, will turn 25 before the start of the next football season.

Iowa QB Cade McNamara slams ‘ridiculous’ rumors

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara released a statement Friday slamming the “100% false” media reports that suggested he had thrown his final pass for the Hawkeyes.

McNamara has been sidelined since sustaining a concussion during the Oct. 26 win against Northwestern.

Backup quarterback Brendan Sullivan has started the last two games for the Hawkeyes (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) but is out with an ankle injury for Saturday’s game at Maryland (4-6, 1-6).

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said earlier this week that Jackson Stratton will be the likely starter against the Terrapins if McNamara is unavailable.

McNamara’s cloudy status prompted speculation on a podcast this week that he was “not mentally ready to play.” The podcast hosts from the Des Moines Register and The Athletic also suggested that McNamara — who played three years at Michigan (2020-22) before transferring to Iowa — is not “fit to play quarterback in the Big Ten right now.”

“We don’t want to bury his career yet, but it does seem like that interception against Northwestern was his last snap as a Hawkeye,” Leistikow said.

McNamara, who passed for 1,017 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight games this season, released a statement updating his current status.

“My status is the same as it’s always been — a proud member of this football team,” he said.

McNamara said he has not yet been cleared to play. He said he was cleared to practice on Sunday but suffered an “adverse reaction” and was unable to practice this week and therefore unable to travel with the team to Maryland.

“I have been working with the University of Iowa doctors and trainers, a concussion specialist focused on vision training, as well as engaging in hyperbaric treatments as frequently as possible,” McNamara said. “I have every intention to play versus Nebraska next Friday night and I am confident that my teammates will return from Maryland with a win.”

Including his time with the Wolverines, McNamara has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 4,703 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 34 games.

Iowa QB Cade McNamara vows to return in 2024

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara said he will return for the 2024 season following knee surgery.

“I had a vision when I decided to come to Iowa and that vision remains the same,” he posted Wednesday night on Twitter. “There is still a lot I want to accomplish in the Black and Gold and look forward to bringing it to life in the 2024 season.”

McNamara’s post included a photo from a hospital bed following season-ending surgery for a torn left ACL.

He sustained the injury during the Hawkeyes’ 26-16 victory against Michigan State on Sept. 30.

A transfer from Michigan, McNamara completed 46 of 90 passes for 505 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions in five games this season for Iowa.

He completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 3,181 yards with 21 TDs and seven picks over parts of three seasons with the Wolverines (2020-22).

Iowa QB Cade McNamara (ACL) to miss rest of season

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed the worst for reporters Tuesday, announcing that starting quarterback Cade McNamara will be lost for the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury in his left knee.

Ferentz added that McNamara’s prognosis for recovery is good, and the quarterback’s intention is to return next season.

McNamara went down with a non-contact injury in the first quarter of Iowa’s 26-16 home win over Michigan State on Saturday night.

The former Michigan passer had completed 3 of 5 passes for 46 yards before exiting. Deacon Hill entered at quarterback and guided the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) to the victory.

McNamara, 23, transferred to Iowa after three seasons with the Big Ten rival Wolverines. He finishes his first season at Iowa with 505 passing yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions on 51.1 percent passing.

After directing the Wolverines to a College Football Playoff appearance in 2021, McNamara has had bad luck with injuries since. He missed most of 2022 with a leg injury (when Michigan returned to the playoffs), before being cleared in time for Iowa’s fall camp in 2023.

Report: Iowa QB Cade McNamara (knee) likely done for year

Iowa has likely lost quarterback Cade McNamara for the rest of the season due to a left knee injury, 247Sports reported Monday.

He went down with a non-contact injury in the first quarter of Iowa’s 26-16 home win over Michigan State on Saturday night.

McNamara had completed 3 of 5 passes for 46 yards before exiting. Deacon Hill entered at quarterback and guided the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) to the victory.

McNamara, 23, transferred to Iowa after three seasons at Big Ten rival Michigan. He finishes his first season at Iowa with 505 passing yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions on 51.1 percent passing.

He missed most of 2022 with a leg injury before being cleared in time for Iowa’s fall camp.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz is expected to comment on McNamara’s injury status at a press conference Tuesday, but McNamara was not listed on the Hawkeyes’ depth chart Monday for this week’s game against Purdue (2-3, 1-1).

Reports: Ex-Michigan starting QB Cade McNamara enters portal

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara entered the transfer portal, multiple outlets reported Monday.

McNamara, in his fourth season in Ann Arbor, led Michigan to the College Football Playoff in 2021.

But in the second game of this season, he lost his starting job to sophomore J.J. McCarthy, a five-star recruit in the 2021 class who has the Wolverines on the brink of a second straight CFP appearance.

McNamara, named an offensive captain in August, started the opener against Colorado State on Sept. 3 and was 9-of-18 passing for 136 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson.

Coach Jim Harbaugh, who didn’t declare a starting quarterback in summer practice, switched starting quarterbacks in the second game of the season against Hawaii and then declared McCarthy the starter.

McNamara played in relief in the Sept. 17 game against UConn — a 59-0 thrashing — and completed one pass for 18 yards but sustained a leg injury and missed the rest of the regular season.

Last season under McNamara, the Wolverines finished 12-2 and won their first Big Ten title since 2004. They lost to eventual champion Georgia in a national semifinal game, 34-11.

He played in 22 games at Michigan and completed 267 passes for 3,181 yards, with 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He added two rushing TDs.

McNamara will have two seasons of eligibility remaining due to a redshirt and the NCAA’s decision to add a year of eligibility because of COVID-19.

Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara warms up before the Penn State game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020.

QB Cade McNamara to start season opener for Michigan

Junior quarterback Cade McNamara will be the starter when Michigan opens the season Saturday against Western Michigan.

Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh announced his decision Monday, saying McNamara had shown both improvement and consistency throughout preseason practices. He competed for the job with Texas Tech transfer Alan Bowman, five-star freshman recruit J.J. McCarthy and sophomore Dan Villari.

The 6-foot-1, 212-pound McNamara played in four games last season, completing 43 of 71 passes for 425 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He added one rushing touchdown.

Joe Milton started the abbreviated 2020 season at quarterback for the Wolverines but was replaced by McNamara in the Nov. 21 game against Rutgers. He was 27-of-36 passing for 260 yards with four touchdowns in a 48-42 triple-overtime win against the Scarlet Knights.

Milton transferred to Tennessee after the season, and on Monday was named the Volunteers’ starter for Thursday’s season opener against Bowling Green.

McNamara, a native of Nevada, didn’t see any game action in 2019.
