Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel greets Tyreek hill during warm-ups before the game against the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Sept. 25, 2022.

Mike McDaniel: Police incident with Dolphins won’t ‘get swept under the rug’

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel commended his players for their response to Tyreek Hill and Calais Campbell being put in handcuffs hours before their season opener Sunday and vowed the incident with police won’t “get swept under the rug.”

Miami-Dade police stopped Hill’s vehicle about a block away from Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning due to a moving violation, and he was briefly detained. Video posted online showed the star receiver placed face-down on the ground by police while handcuffed.

When teammate Campbell — a veteran in his first season with the Dolphins — came by the scene and tried to de-escalate the situation, he too was briefly placed in handcuffs.

Hill was ultimately issued two traffic citations. Miami-Dade police said the officer who made initial contact with Hill was placed on administrative duty while an investigation is conducted.

McDaniel, 41, is biracial, the son of a Black father and White mother. Hill and Campbell are both Black.

“It’s been hard to not find myself more upset the more I think about it,” McDaniel told reporters at his scheduled Monday press conference.

“The thing that (expletive) me up, honestly, to be quite frank, is knowing that I don’t know exactly — I don’t know what that feels like.”

McDaniel said it was “very, very important” to him to let due process run its course, but that the feelings Hill and Campbell expressed to him were “unsettling.”

He added that he feels crushed by “the unknown” and the possibility that the incident was worse than he already knows.

“Simply because of my appearance, I don’t have a history of feeling profiled,” McDaniel said. “For me in particular, I feel pretty helpless at times.”

“But two things did come from the adversity,” he added. “Super proud of teammates being teammates, and super proud of our guys understanding the civic responsibility of a platform.”

Hill made it to the game in time to play and contributed an 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown that launched the Dolphins’ comeback in a 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Upon Hill scoring the touchdown, teammate Jaylen Waddle helped him celebrate by grabbing Hill’s wrists behind his back and pretending to place him in handcuffs.

Afterward, Hill told reporters he had “no idea” why he was handcuffed for a moving violation and claimed he was not disrespectful toward the officer.

But the South Florida Police Benevolent Association defended the officer in a statement from president Steadman Stahl on Monday, claiming Hill did not cooperate. Video showed the officer gave Hill less than one second to follow orders before being cursed at.

“First, to be clear, at no time was (Hill) ever under arrest,” the statement read. “He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger.

“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on the scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.”

Police have yet to release official bodycam video, and McDaniel said he would let the process play out.

Still, he was on edge, ready to defend his players.

“This is too much under the spotlight to get swept under the rug,” McDaniel said.

DE Calais Campbell ‘leaning toward’ a 17th season

Defensive lineman Calais Campbell said he is “leaning toward” returning for a 17th NFL season in 2024.

Campbell, 37, surpassed 100 career sacks during his first season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

He started all 17 games and collected 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hits and 56 tackles.

“I’m gonna go through my process, but I’m leaning toward playing again,” Campbell said Monday, per Fox 5 Atlanta. “I mean, there’s no guarantees once I go through that process. But the way I feel right now, my body and stuff, I feel like if were were playing this week in a playoff game, I’d be dominant and feel really good. And so, I mean, I’m sure I’m going to feel good in a few weeks. … I don’t see myself just wanting to walk away.”

The six-time Pro Bowl selection and 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year will be an unrestricted free agent.

Campbell has recorded 105.5 sacks in 244 games with the Arizona Cardinals (2008-16), Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19), Baltimore Ravens (2020-22) and Falcons.

Falcons announce 1-year deal with DE Calais Campbell

The Atlanta Falcons announced a one-year deal with free agent defensive end Calais Campbell on Friday.

Terms were not disclosed, but NFL Network reported the contract includes a fully guaranteed $7 million base salary and up to $2 million more in incentives.

Campbell, 36, was released by the Baltimore Ravens on March 13 in a cost-cutting move. The Ravens, who cleared $6.5 million in cap space, had been hoping to re-sign Campbell on a lesser deal.

Instead, Campbell will take his six Pro Bowls and 99 career sacks to a team that has vastly improved its defense in free agency. The Falcons also added safety Jessie Bates III, defensive tackle David Onyemata and linebacker Kaden Elliss. Further, the Falcons own the No. 8 pick in the upcoming draft.

The Falcons ended 2022 ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring defense (22.7) and 27th in total yards per game (362.1).

Campbell had 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 starts for the Ravens last season.

A 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team.

Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

The Jaguars traded him to the Ravens in March 2020 for a fifth-round draft pick.

In 227 career games (208 starts), Campbell has 809 tackles (165 for loss), 237 quarterback hits, three interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.

Reports: DE Calais Campbell to sign with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are closing in on a one-year deal with free agent defensive end Calais Campbell, the latest in a series of moves to bolster a moribund defense, ESPN and NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Campbell, 36, was released by the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month in a cost-cutting move. The Ravens, who cleared $6.5 million in cap space, were hoping to re-sign Campbell on a lesser deal.

Ravens release Pro Bowl DE Calais Campbell

Defensive end Calais Campbell announced last month that he’s returning for a 16th NFL season, but it won’t be with the Baltimore Ravens. At least not on his current deal.

The Ravens released the six-time Pro Bowler on Monday after three seasons while leaving the door open for a return on a lesser deal.

“While this is the worst part of the business, we have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning to our team in the future,” Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said in a statement.

The Ravens clear $6.5 million in cap space with the move.

Campbell had 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 starts for the Ravens last season.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection and a 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team.

Now 36, Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

The Jaguars traded him to the Ravens in March 2020 for a fifth-round draft pick.

In 227 career games (208 starts), Campbell has 809 tackles (165 for loss), 237 quarterback hits, 99 sacks, three interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.

Ravens DE Calais Campbell had surgery to treat infection

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell missed last Sunday’s game with what was listed as an illness on the injury report. His absence actually was due to a surgery to remove an infection, Campbell told ESPN on Saturday.

The six-time Pro Bowl player said he’s already back at full strength thanks to the Oct. 26 surgery plus an antibiotics’ regimen, but acknowledged it was a concerning situation at first.

“I had an infection that required surgery to remove, so it was pretty bad,” Campbell said. “In the moment … yeah, that’s scary.”

Although Campbell didn’t go into much detail about the procedure, he is not listed on the injury report as the Ravens head to New Orleans for a Monday night matchup against the Saints.

“I feel good,” Campbell told ESPN. “I don’t feel any different, so that’s good. I’m back to my normal self.”

Campbell, 36, is the only active NFL defender to play in at least 200 career games. He started his career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, followed by the Jaguars from 2017-19, before joining the Ravens in 2020. He has a career total of 794 tackles and 96.5 sacks in 220 games.

DL Calais Campbell agrees to 2-year deal with Ravens

Defensive lineman Calais Campbell is returning to the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year deal.

The team didn’t announce the contract value, but NFL Network pegged it at $12.5 million, with incentives that could push it to $16.5 million.

A 2017 All-Pro and a six-time Pro Bowl selection, Campbell is entering his 15th NFL season. The 35-year-old has played for the Arizona Cardinals (2008-16), Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19) and Ravens.

The Jaguars traded him to Baltimore in 2020 for a fifth-round pick in that year’s draft.

In 27 games with the Ravens, he has 77 tackles and 5.5 sacks. In his career, Campbell has 773 tackles (161 for loss), 223 quarterback hits, 93.5 sacks, 12 fumble recoveries and three interceptions in 213 games (194 starts).

DE Campbell among three Ravens removed from COVID-19 list

The Baltimore Ravens activated three more players from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, including starting defensive end Calais Campbell and running back Mark Ingram II.

Also activated was backup defenseman lineman Jihad Ward.

The return of Campbell, who has four sacks, will be a big boost for the struggling Ravens. After a 5-1 start, Baltimore has lost four of its past five games and is out of playoff position ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Ravens had more than 20 players on the reserve/COVID-19 list — a list now whittled down to 10. The outbreak forced their game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, originally scheduled for Thanksgiving night, to be delayed twice and it was finally played Wednesday. Their Week 13 game against the Cowboys also was moved from Thursday to Tuesday.

Team president Dick Cass addressed the team situation in a statement on Saturday.

“Our thoughts are with our infected players, staff and their families,” he said. “They are receiving treatment and are being monitored to provide them with the best possible care, and we are hoping for a full recovery for all.

“We want to thank our players. Their proactive efforts and resolve during this difficult situation were nothing short of extraordinary. We couldn’t be prouder of them.

“We also offer our profound appreciation to the NFL, the Steelers, the Cowboys, and the fans, for their support, understanding and flexibility during this time of unforeseen upheaval due to this coronavirus outbreak.”

Cass said the NFL informed the team that the Ravens had “at least four unique strains of COVID-19 in our facility. Three of the four were stopped and not spread within our organization. Unfortunately, the fourth was a highly contagious strain and spread throughout our organization.”

Yet to be activated for the Ravens is quarterback Lamar Jackson, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Pplayer. With backup Robert Griffin III landing on injured reserve on Friday with a hamstring injury, third-stringer Trace McSorley took first-team reps this week to prepare to start against the Cowboys in case Jackson can’t.

Campbell has been out since Nov. 8, when he sustained a calf injury in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts. A five-time Pro Bowl selection, he also has 24 tackles and 10 quarterback hits in eight games.

Ingram has seen his role diminish this season with the emergence of rookie running back J.K. Dobbins. In eight game, Ingram has run for 232 yards and two touchdowns.

Dobbins, linebacker Pernell McPhee, and offensive linemen Patrick Mekari and Matt Skura were activated from the list Friday. It is unclear whether any of the activated players will suit up against Dallas.

Earlier this week, coach John Harbaugh said doctors would decide when players could return to the field.

“When the doctors clear them for practice, that’s when we’ll have them,” Harbaugh said.

Report: Ravens DE Campbell (calf) to miss 2-5 weeks

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell will be sidelined 2-to-5 weeks with a calf strain, NFL Network reported Monday.

There’s no structural damage, per the report, and Campbell will undergo more tests.

Campbell left Sunday’s 24-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the first quarter. He walked to the sideline under his own power after going down following a running play.

Campbell, 34, has started every game this season, recording 24 tackles, four sacks, six passes defensed, five tackles for loss and 10 quarterback hits. It’s Campbell’s first season in Baltimore after spending the past three seasons in Jacksonville.

Campbell is a five-time Pro Bowl selection and was named first-team All Pro in 2017.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Campbell in the second round of the 2008 draft. He played nine seasons in Arizona.

The Ravens (6-2) next play at New England against the Patriots (2-5) on Sunday night.
