Report: Calais Campbell, 39, to sign 1-year deal with Ravens

Six-time Pro-Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell is returning to Baltimore to sign a one-year contract with the Ravens, ESPN reported Thursday.

Campbell, who turns 40 on Sept. 1, previously played in Baltimore from 2020-22. He will suit up for his 19th NFL season in 2026.

Campbell has appeared in 278 regular-season games (259 starts). The league record for a defensive lineman is 282 games, set by Minnesota Vikings great Jim Marshall from 1960-79.

Campbell had 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 17 games (all starts) last season with the Arizona Cardinals.

He has totaled 960 tackles and 117 sacks since being selected by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He played with Arizona (2008-16, 2025) as well as the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19), Ravens, Atlanta Falcons (2023) and Miami Dolphins (2024).

Campbell was a first-team All-Pro in 2017 and was named the 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

Cards’ Calais Campbell undecided about a 19th season

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell said he will take some time before deciding whether to return for his 19th NFL season in 2026.

Campbell, who will be 40 by the time next season kicks off, has started every game this season heading into Sunday’s season finale against the host Los Angeles Rams. He ranks second on the team with 6.5 sacks and shares the lead with 16 quarterback hits.

“The last few years I’ve been through this process I’ve known pretty quickly that I’ve wanted to play again,” Campbell said in a story published by the team on Wednesday. “It didn’t take me that long — within a month or so, I knew I wanted to play football again. We’ll see. I hope to know quickly if I don’t want to play football again.

“The biggest thing is if I do want to play football again, I give myself the opportunities to play football again. I try to always sign my work and play at a level that they want me back. Even if I decide not to play again, I want to have the ability to say no, rather than them saying, ‘See you later.’”

Campbell, who was drafted by the Cardinals in the second round in 2008, will appear in his 278th regular-season game on Sunday. The NFL record for a defensive lineman is 282 games by Minnesota Vikings great Jim Marshall from 1960-79.

Campbell has been one of Arizona’s best players this season, recording 41 tackles and blocking two kicks. His 117 career sacks rank fourth among active players and 25th all-time.

“He shows up every day and does the right thing,” defensive coordinator Nick Rallis said. “Practices hard, studies hard, knows his assignments, and I think he’s just been a good example as the standard of what being a pro looks like. He is a very good outgoing leader who is very intentional of bringing people around with him.”

Campbell is a free agent after this season. In addition to the Cardinals (2008-16, 2025), the six-time Pro Bowl selection has played for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19), Baltimore Ravens (2020-22), Atlanta Falcons (2023) and Miami Dolphins (2024).

He was a first-team All-Pro in 2017 and was named the 2019 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year.

“I’ve always tried to play well enough that I have a choice,” Campbell said. “I think I did well enough this year that I will have a choice. That’s a good feeling.”

Cardinals sign DE Calais Campbell to one-year deal

Six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell is going back to where his NFL career began, signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday.

The Cardinals did not confirm financial terms, but ESPN and NFL Network reported the deal is for $5.5 million with a max value of $7.5 million.

Campbell, 38, was a second-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 2008 and played his first nine seasons there, followed by stints with Jacksonville (2017-19), Baltimore (2020-22) and Atlanta (2023).

He spent the 2024 season with the Miami Dolphins and posted 52 tackles (12 for loss), 12 quarterback hits and five sacks.

In his 261-game career (242 starts), Campbell has amassed 917 tackles, 266 quarterback hits, 110.5 sacks, 18 forced fumbles, 13 fumble recoveries and three interceptions. His 187 tackles for loss rank most among all active players.

Campbell was also the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year for the 2019 season and a first-team All-Pro in 2017.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel greets Tyreek hill during warm-ups before the game against the Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Sept. 25, 2022.

Mike McDaniel: Police incident with Dolphins won’t ‘get swept under the rug’

Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel commended his players for their response to Tyreek Hill and Calais Campbell being put in handcuffs hours before their season opener Sunday and vowed the incident with police won’t “get swept under the rug.”

Miami-Dade police stopped Hill’s vehicle about a block away from Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday morning due to a moving violation, and he was briefly detained. Video posted online showed the star receiver placed face-down on the ground by police while handcuffed.

When teammate Campbell — a veteran in his first season with the Dolphins — came by the scene and tried to de-escalate the situation, he too was briefly placed in handcuffs.

Hill was ultimately issued two traffic citations. Miami-Dade police said the officer who made initial contact with Hill was placed on administrative duty while an investigation is conducted.

McDaniel, 41, is biracial, the son of a Black father and White mother. Hill and Campbell are both Black.

“It’s been hard to not find myself more upset the more I think about it,” McDaniel told reporters at his scheduled Monday press conference.

“The thing that (expletive) me up, honestly, to be quite frank, is knowing that I don’t know exactly — I don’t know what that feels like.”

McDaniel said it was “very, very important” to him to let due process run its course, but that the feelings Hill and Campbell expressed to him were “unsettling.”

He added that he feels crushed by “the unknown” and the possibility that the incident was worse than he already knows.

“Simply because of my appearance, I don’t have a history of feeling profiled,” McDaniel said. “For me in particular, I feel pretty helpless at times.”

“But two things did come from the adversity,” he added. “Super proud of teammates being teammates, and super proud of our guys understanding the civic responsibility of a platform.”

Hill made it to the game in time to play and contributed an 80-yard catch-and-run touchdown that launched the Dolphins’ comeback in a 20-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Upon Hill scoring the touchdown, teammate Jaylen Waddle helped him celebrate by grabbing Hill’s wrists behind his back and pretending to place him in handcuffs.

Afterward, Hill told reporters he had “no idea” why he was handcuffed for a moving violation and claimed he was not disrespectful toward the officer.

But the South Florida Police Benevolent Association defended the officer in a statement from president Steadman Stahl on Monday, claiming Hill did not cooperate. Video showed the officer gave Hill less than one second to follow orders before being cursed at.

“First, to be clear, at no time was (Hill) ever under arrest,” the statement read. “He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger.

“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on the scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.”

Police have yet to release official bodycam video, and McDaniel said he would let the process play out.

Still, he was on edge, ready to defend his players.

“This is too much under the spotlight to get swept under the rug,” McDaniel said.

DE Calais Campbell ‘leaning toward’ a 17th season

Defensive lineman Calais Campbell said he is “leaning toward” returning for a 17th NFL season in 2024.

Campbell, 37, surpassed 100 career sacks during his first season with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

He started all 17 games and collected 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hits and 56 tackles.

“I’m gonna go through my process, but I’m leaning toward playing again,” Campbell said Monday, per Fox 5 Atlanta. “I mean, there’s no guarantees once I go through that process. But the way I feel right now, my body and stuff, I feel like if were were playing this week in a playoff game, I’d be dominant and feel really good. And so, I mean, I’m sure I’m going to feel good in a few weeks. … I don’t see myself just wanting to walk away.”

The six-time Pro Bowl selection and 2019 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year will be an unrestricted free agent.

Campbell has recorded 105.5 sacks in 244 games with the Arizona Cardinals (2008-16), Jacksonville Jaguars (2017-19), Baltimore Ravens (2020-22) and Falcons.

Falcons announce 1-year deal with DE Calais Campbell

The Atlanta Falcons announced a one-year deal with free agent defensive end Calais Campbell on Friday.

Terms were not disclosed, but NFL Network reported the contract includes a fully guaranteed $7 million base salary and up to $2 million more in incentives.

Campbell, 36, was released by the Baltimore Ravens on March 13 in a cost-cutting move. The Ravens, who cleared $6.5 million in cap space, had been hoping to re-sign Campbell on a lesser deal.

Instead, Campbell will take his six Pro Bowls and 99 career sacks to a team that has vastly improved its defense in free agency. The Falcons also added safety Jessie Bates III, defensive tackle David Onyemata and linebacker Kaden Elliss. Further, the Falcons own the No. 8 pick in the upcoming draft.

The Falcons ended 2022 ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring defense (22.7) and 27th in total yards per game (362.1).

Campbell had 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 starts for the Ravens last season.

A 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team.

Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

The Jaguars traded him to the Ravens in March 2020 for a fifth-round draft pick.

In 227 career games (208 starts), Campbell has 809 tackles (165 for loss), 237 quarterback hits, three interceptions, 57 passes defensed, 16 forced fumbles and 12 fumble recoveries.

Reports: DE Calais Campbell to sign with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are closing in on a one-year deal with free agent defensive end Calais Campbell, the latest in a series of moves to bolster a moribund defense, ESPN and NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Ravens release Pro Bowl DE Calais Campbell

Defensive end Calais Campbell announced last month that he’s returning for a 16th NFL season, but it won’t be with the Baltimore Ravens. At least not on his current deal.

The Ravens released the six-time Pro Bowler on Monday after three seasons while leaving the door open for a return on a lesser deal.

“While this is the worst part of the business, we have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning to our team in the future,” Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said in a statement.

The Ravens clear $6.5 million in cap space with the move.

Campbell had 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 14 starts for the Ravens last season.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection and a 2017 All-Pro, Campbell was named to the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s team.

Now 36, Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. He played for the team through the 2016 season then signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a free agent.

Ravens DE Calais Campbell had surgery to treat infection

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell missed last Sunday’s game with what was listed as an illness on the injury report. His absence actually was due to a surgery to remove an infection, Campbell told ESPN on Saturday.

The six-time Pro Bowl player said he’s already back at full strength thanks to the Oct. 26 surgery plus an antibiotics’ regimen, but acknowledged it was a concerning situation at first.

“I had an infection that required surgery to remove, so it was pretty bad,” Campbell said. “In the moment … yeah, that’s scary.”

Although Campbell didn’t go into much detail about the procedure, he is not listed on the injury report as the Ravens head to New Orleans for a Monday night matchup against the Saints.

“I feel good,” Campbell told ESPN. “I don’t feel any different, so that’s good. I’m back to my normal self.”

Campbell, 36, is the only active NFL defender to play in at least 200 career games. He started his career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, followed by the Jaguars from 2017-19, before joining the Ravens in 2020. He has a career total of 794 tackles and 96.5 sacks in 220 games.
