Giants RB Cam Skattebo says he’s sorry for ‘tasteless joke’

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo said he had a “lapse in judgment” when he made a comment saying chronic traumatic encephalopathy and asthma were not legitimate conditions.

“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma. It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma,” he wrote on X on Saturday. “I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward.

“Much love !!!”

The apology was in response to a conversation he had while a recent guest on the “Bring the Juice” podcast. The host asked Skattebo if he thought CTE was real.

“No, it’s an excuse,” Skattebo said, shaking his head.

In early 2023, the CTE Center at Boston University reported that it had studied the brains of 376 former NFL players, and 345 were diagnosed with CTE, a degenerative brain disease that occurs in athletes who have taken repetitive hits to the head. It cannot be diagnosed until after death, and Pro Football Hall of Fame member Junior Seau and former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez were among former players who were determined to have CTE.

On the podcast, Skattebo, 24, also was asked if asthma also is an “excuse.”

“No, that’s a good take,” he said. “Yes, asthma’s fake too.”

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, more than 28 million — or one in 12 — people have asthma.

His mother said she is one of them and that her son was attempting humor.

“If only people knew how many times cam had to ‘run and get mom’s inhaler’ they’d realize the sarcasm…you’ll never make everyone happy and you’ll never say all the right things and people are bound to spin something sooner or later in a direction it was never intended to go,” Becky Skattebo posted to X.

An X account belonging to Garrett Webster, who identified himself as the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers great Mike Webster, took a moment to offer some guidance to Skattebo.

“Mr Skattebo, my father was Mike Webster, you might not know him but he suffered from CTE,” the post read. “I’m glad that you recognize your words were unacceptable. Please understand CTE has destroyed the lives of many former players and their families. Be better in the future. Rooting 4 u”

The elder Webster was the center on four Super Bowl-championship Steelers teams and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1997. He died in 2002 at age 50.

The Giants selected Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He played in eight games (five starts) and ran for 410 yards and five touchdowns, adding 207 yards and two touchdowns on pass receptions before sustaining a season-ending ankle injury.

Giants interim coach not fazed by Cam Skattebo’s WWE appearance

New York Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka isn’t wrestling with concern over injured running back Cam Skattebo’s participation in a staged WWE event on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

Skattebo’s physical involvement in the wrestling arena drew a mixed reaction from some Giants fans, given that the running back is approximately three weeks removed from surgery following a severe ankle injury.

Kafka, however, said Wednesday that he wasn’t too worried when he saw Skattebo, fellow Giants rookie linebacker Abdul Carter and defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris at WWE’s “Monday Night Raw.”

“Yeah, I trust Skatt, and I trust our medical department, our medical staff to take great care of him,” Kafka said.

As for the event itself?

“So, I thought it was a cool thing,” Kafka said. “I know it was like a staged little brawl there. It was great to see Skatt on the pregame, on the sideline. His juice, his energy, you can feel it. I can feel it through the TV and through my phone when I was watching the clips. So, it’s a cool event for those guys to kind of get out and be out in the community.”

Seated ringside on Monday, Skattebo was involved in what can best be described as an “impromptu” pushing match with a wrestling villainous faction known as “Judgment Day.”

It all started with wrestler Dominik Mysterio drawing heat from the MSG crowd by taunting comedian Andrew Schulz about the city’s lack of recent pro sports champions.

Mysterio then asked how many years it had been since a New York team had won a championship before turning to Skattebo, who was seated nearby. The wrestler then addressed Skattebo and said: “Can you count, Cam? How many years? He don’t know. He can’t count.”

Mysterio shoved Schulz, prompting Skattebo to rise from his seat to confront the wrestler while showing no ill effects from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in Week 8. Skattebo, who was wearing a protective boot, pushed back against Mysterio, igniting a brawl between the Giants players and the group of wrestlers.

Fans and sportstalk radio hosts in New York and beyond were busy voicing their thoughts on Skattebo being ringside and involved in the staged altercation on Tuesday when the rookie back defended himself.

“Honestly if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on,” Skattebo posted on X. “I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life so I am doing things outside the box trying to find stuff to keep me happy. Enjoy the rest of y’all’s week and just don’t talk about me if you ain’t got nothing nice to say.”

Skattebo’s season came to an end after he was placed on injured reserve Oct. 29, three days after he sustained a severe ankle injury in the Giants’ 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Skattebo, 23, had 101 carries for 410 yards and five touchdowns in eight games (five starts). He also caught 24 passes for 207 yards and two TDs for the Giants, who selected Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

Giants RB Cam Skattebo ignites ‘skirmish’ at WWE event

New York Giants injured rookie running back Cam Skattebo had no issue getting physical off the field on Monday.

Seated ringside with fellow Giants rookie linebacker Abdul Carter at WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” at Madison Square Garden in New York, Skattebo was involved in what can best be described as an “impromptu” (read: staged) pushing match with a wrestling villainous faction known as “Judgment Day.”

Report: Skattebo sustained multiple leg injuries vs. Eagles

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo’s season-ending injuries included not only a dislocated ankle but also a fibula fracture and deltoid ligament rupture, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Skattebo sustained the injuries to his lower right leg midway through the second quarter in Sunday’s 28-20 road loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

He was transported to a Philadelphia-area hospital and underwent surgery before being discharged on Monday. The team placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, and Giants coach Brian Daboll declined to speculate on a timeline for Skattebo’s return to the field.

“He’s a couple days out of surgery. … He’s got a road ahead of him to rehab,” Daboll said Wednesday.

According to Wednesday’s report, Skattebo’s injuries have a six-month recovery period, meaning he could still be ready for team OTAs and minicamp.

“I couldn’t answer that. You have to ask the doctors,” Daboll responded when asked about the possibility of Skattebo playing next season. “I don’t think they can give me a six-month or eight-month prognostication. He’s just getting done with surgery. He’s got his leg all wrapped up.

“We’re just going to help him rehab and he’ll be out here as soon as he can.”

Skattebo, 23, posted on X on Monday afternoon, expressing gratitude to those who reached out and helped him.

“Thank you everyone for the support,” Skattebo posted. “Surgery went well. I just want to thank the city of Philly for taking the best care of me. Every moment I spent in the hospital with family and friends I felt loved and supported in every way. Thank you to the doctors, surgeons, and staff that did their best work on me. This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!! GOD has a plan for me, stick the course and it will all work itself out. BRB (be right back).”

New York selected Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Arizona State.

He had 101 carries for 410 yards and five touchdowns in eight games (five starts). He also caught 24 passes for 207 yards and two TDs.

Daboll said Skattebo was in the building taking part in meetings on Wednesday.

“He’s been in, I’ve seen him wheeling around,” Daboll said.

Giants’ Daboll: Cam Skattebo’s ‘got a road ahead of him’ after surgery

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that running back Cam Skattebo underwent successful surgery for a dislocated right ankle but that a recovery timetable remains undetermined.

“He’s got a road ahead of him,” Daboll said during his media availability Monday.

Skattebo was admitted to a Philadelphia-area hospital Sunday following his gruesome injury.

“I’m not going to get into the particulars, but (surgery) all went well,” Daboll said. “He’s recovering, and obviously he’ll be missed, but on the road to recovery.”

The Giants trailed 14-7 with 8:07 left before halftime when Skattebo went to the ground after an incomplete pass. His leg got caught under him when he was tackled by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. An air cast was placed on the leg before Skattebo was removed from the field.

Skattebo posted on X Monday afternoon, expressing gratitude to those who have reached out and who helped him.

Before he left the field, New York players surrounded the cart to express their support and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart exchanged a light head butt with Skattebo. Daboll was asked about the tight bond Dart and Skattebo share.

“These guys spend a lot of time together, meeting time, outside the building,” Daboll said. “And that’s always a tough element to this game is when guys go down and get hurt. You hate to see it. Unfortunately, it’s part of the business.”

The coach said he communicated to Skattebo via text on Monday in an exchange the running back initiated at “4:08 this morning.”

“I mean, (his mood is) as good as can be through text,” Daboll said. “But you feel for your players when they go down like that.”

Skattebo, who scored three rushing touchdowns in a 34-17 win against Philadelphia in Week 6, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dart with 2:56 left in the first quarter to tie Sunday’s game at 7-7.

Skattebo, 23, finished with three carries for 12 yards and the one reception in the 38-20 loss to the Eagles.

A fourth-round pick from Arizona State, Skattebo has rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and caught 24 passes for 207 yards and two scores in eight games.

Daboll said the team is still deciding how to split carries at running back moving forward with Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary and even practice squad back Dante Miller in the mix. Tracy leads that group with 159 rushing yards on 45 carries with one touchdown.

Giants RB Cam Skattebo dislocates ankle vs. Eagles

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo was carted off the field with a dislocated right ankle in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

Skattebo was transported to a Philadelphia-area hospital for evaluation, where he will undergo surgery Sunday night, according to the team.

The Giants trailed 14-7 with 8:07 left before halftime when Skattebo went to the ground after an incomplete pass. His leg got caught under him when he was tackled by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun.

An air cast was placed on the leg before Skattebo was removed from the field. New York players surrounded the cart to express their support and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart exchanged a light head butt with Skattebo.

“I was devastated,” Dart said after the 38-20 loss to the Eagles. “It’s my boy, man, so seeing him go down and obviously reacting to what happened, that sucks. It’s the worst part of this game.”

The Fox broadcast opted not to show replays of the injury.

“I feel absolutely terrible for the young man,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said postgame. “Obviously, saw it. Looked bad. You feel for anybody on your team that goes down and has a really bad injury. I feel and I know the players feel the same way about Skatt.”

Skattebo, who scored three rushing touchdowns in a 34-17 win against Philadelphia in Week 6, caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dart with 2:56 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.

Skattebo, 23, finished with three carries for 12 yards and the one reception.

A fourth-round pick from Arizona State, Skattebo has rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns and caught 24 passes for 207 yards and two scores in eight games.

Giants, Brian Daboll fined for interrupting Jaxson Dart concussion exam

The New York Giants were fined $200,000 for violating the concussion protocol after rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart exited their Oct. 9 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, the NFL and NFLPA announced Friday.

The league’s joint investigation with the players’ association found coach Brian Daboll and running back Cam Skattebo breached the protocol during New York’s Week 6 home win. Daboll and Skattebo entered the sideline medical tent to speak to Dart while doctors evaluated him, “creating the perception they were interfering” with the exam.

“While the parties agreed that Coach Daboll’s and Mr. Skattebo’s actions had no actual impact on the exam or the care that Mr. Dart received, their conduct was inconsistent with and demonstrated a disregard for the concussion protocol’s requirements,” the joint statement read.

On top of the team’s penalty, Daboll was fined $100,000 and Skattebo was fined $15,000 for conduct detrimental to the league.

Dart left the Oct. 9 game — a 34-17 New York victory — toward the end of the third quarter after absorbing a sack and clutching his head. Backup Russell Wilson came in for two plays, and his lone incomplete pass attempt left the Giants facing fourth-and-9 at the Eagles’ 42-yard line.

The TV broadcast showed Daboll peering into the tent and yelling at the Giants’ team physician, Dr. Scott Rodeo, on the sideline.

Following the game, Daboll said he’d apologized to Rodeo and explained he was seeking clarity on Dart’s status before deciding whether to call timeout and go for it on fourth down.

The Giants opted to punt, and Dart was cleared to return for the next offensive series.

“I went (into the tent) — didn’t actually go in, just stuck my head in, to see how our quarterback was doing. Just asked him, ‘How you doing?’” Daboll told reporters. “In no way would I want a player to come back out there that wasn’t ready to play. I think I have great respect for that process.”

The league and NFLPA’s review concluded Giants medical staff and independent medical providers followed the concussion protocol while assessing Dart.

The protocol dictates “only medical personnel deemed essential to the care of the athlete” may enter the medical tent while a player is being examined, Friday’s joint statement noted.

Dart, the No. 25 overall draft pick out of Ole Miss, replaced Wilson as New York’s starting quarterback in the fourth week of the season.

He’s steered the Giants, who are 2-5 overall, to two wins and two losses in his starts while completing 60.2% of passes for 791 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Giants visit the Eagles on Sunday to conclude their two-game season series.

NFL, NFLPA launch review of Jaxson Dart concussion protocol

The NFL has initiated a review of the concussion protocol applied in the evaluation of New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart during Thursday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The league announced Friday that the review will be conducted jointly with the NFL Players Association.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll ventured toward the blue injury tent while Dart was being evaluated for a concussion during the Giants’ 34-17 victory over the Eagles. Dart was injured late in the third quarter after he fell into Philadelphia Azeez Ojulari while being sacked by fellow linebacker Patrick Johnson.

“I apologized directly to our team physician. I just wanted (Dart) out there if he was OK,” Daboll told reporters after the game. “But I wanted the process, like we were getting ready to go for it on a potential fourth down, I would have burned a timeout if he could have come out there. I was asking how long was it going to take.

“Again, you want your guy out there. Not at risk of anything else.”

Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo also poked his head into the blue injury tent.

“I was making sure that Jaxson wasn’t hurting anybody in the injury tent,” Skattebo joked.

“He’s a dog. He wants to be back on the field. I knew going over there, I needed to calm down a little bit because I knew he was going to be on fire. I was trying to go over there before the drive was over, trying to tell him, ‘relax, relax we’re good’, but I had to wait and then when I was in there he was a little fired up, but we know we have to go through protocol and do all that stuff to make sure we can get back on the field. I went in there and kind of, ‘We’re good, man, we’ve got you,’ and that’s it.”

For his part, Dart said he just wanted to get back on the field.

“It felt so long,” Dart said. “Yeah, had a few guys popped in. I was just trying to get back there on the field. I understand they have protocol and whatnot. I was just trying to get out there fast.”

Dart, who was sidelined for two plays, completed 17 of 25 passes for 195 yards and ran for 58 yards on 13 attempts.

The Giants (2-4) visit the Denver Broncos on Oct. 19.

Cam Skattebo, Shedeur Sanders among top 10 Heisman vote-getters

The winner of the 2024 Heisman Trophy will be announced Saturday night from among four finalists, but the organizers of the award on Friday released the list of other top vote-getters.

Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami quarterback Cam Ward are the top four on that list, though of course the order of those four will be revealed at the Heisman ceremony this weekend.

Checking in at No. 5 is Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo, who powered the Sun Devils to a six-game winning streak and a Big 12 championship, as well as a first-round bye in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

Skattebo exploded for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground with a trademark hard-running style. He added 37 receptions for 506 yards and an additional three touchdowns.

Bryson Daily finished in sixth place after quarterbacking the Army Black Knights to an 11-1 record and current No. 22 ranking in the CFP Top 25. Daily led the Black Knights in passing (877 yards, eight touchdowns) and rushing (1,480 yards, 29 touchdowns) as Army won the American Conference with an 8-0 record.

Tight end Tyler Warren finished seventh and was a similar multi-purpose threat for 11-2 Penn State, leading the Nittany Lions with 88 receptions for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns, while also running for 191 yards and four touchdowns. Warren also tossed a touchdown pass for the No. 4 Nittany Lions, another playoff team.

Hunter’s high-profile teammate Shedeur Sanders was eighth after throwing for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns for 9-3 Colorado. Sanders added four touchdowns on the ground.

No. 9 in voting was Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke, who quarterbacked the Hoosiers to a playoff berth with an 11-1 record. Rourke threw for 2,827 yards and 27 touchdowns and scored two rushing TDs.

Rounding out the top 10 was Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord. The Ohio State transfer threw for 4,326 yards and 29 touchdowns with three touchdowns on the ground in his first season with the Orange, who finished 9-3.
