Reports: Patriots, CB Carlton Davis agree to $60M contract

Free agent cornerback Carlton Davis agreed to join the New England Patriots on a three-year contract worth up to $60 million, according to multiple reports.

New England also picked up linebacker Robert Spillane (Las Vegas Raiders) on a reported three-year, $37.5 million agreement, according to multiple reports.

Adding Davis addresses the secondary and a focus of the new defense being implemented by head coach Mike Vrabel, who can pair the physical and aggressive Davis with left cornerback Christian Gonzalez in 2025.

Davis, 28, was acquired by the Detroit Lions before the 2024 season but finished his lone season in Detroit on injured reserve with a broken jaw.

A self-described lockdown corner, Davis is a top-end competitor with the size to line up at multiple positions in New England’s scheme.

Spillane is a former Titans linebacker under Vrabel and an ex-teammate of outside linebacker Harold Landry, who agreed to join the Patriots after being released by Tennessee last week.

He led the Raiders with a career-high 158 tackles and had two sacks and two interceptions in 2024.

Bucs trade CB Carlton Davis to Lions, waive DE Shaq Barrett

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday announced the trade of veteran cornerback Carlton Davis III to Detroit in exchange for a third-round pick in April’s NFL draft.

The Bucs send the Lions a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Bucs also officially released veteran linebacker Shaquil Barrett, a move that will provide nearly $5 million in salary cap relief.

Davis, 27, spent his first six NFL seasons with the Buccaneers and has nine interceptions, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and 324 tackles in 76 games (75 starts).

He had a career-best four interceptions in 2020 when he earned a Super Bowl ring with Tampa Bay.

“It’s always difficult to part ways with a player that has meant so much to your organization” Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said in a release. “Carlton was a vital member of our Super Bowl championship team and has been a tremendous teammate over the past six seasons.”

During his press conference with the Lions, Davis didn’t shy away from expectations with his new club.

“You’re about to get a lockdown corner. I’m here to take out the No. 1 receiver on any team,” Davis said Wednesday. “I’m here to deny the ball, I’m here to take the ball away.”

Barrett, 31, had an option bonus of $15.04 million due next month. The Bucs will designate the nine-year veteran as a post-June 1 cut, enabling them to divide his $26.67 million dead cap costs over 2024 and 2025. That means a $9.3 million cap hit in 2024 and $17.5 million in 2025, per reports.

After being let go, Barrett reportedly agreed to a one-year, $9 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Barrett started 16 games in 2023, equaling his career high, and delivered 4.5 sacks, 52 tackles, three forced fumbles and one interception (a pick-six in a Week 2 win against the Chicago Bears).

He has 59 sacks, 125 quarterback hits, 22 forced fumbles and 400 tackles in 131 games (85 starts) with the Denver Broncos (2015-18) and Buccaneers. He won Super Bowl 50 with Denver and SB LV with Tampa Bay.

“We are extremely thankful for everything Shaq brought to our organization over the last five years,” Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles said in a release. “He was an impactful player and a tremendous person, who was a key part of the successes we have had here. These are always difficult decisions, but this one was that much harder due to the special feelings we have for Shaq, Jordanna and the Barrett family.”

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield ‘full go’ with playoff spot on the line

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield received the green light to play in Sunday’s must-win game against the Carolina Panthers.

Mayfield avoided serious injury after taking a late hit in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s loss to the New Orleans Saints, and head coach Todd Bowles said his quarterback will play Sunday in Charlotte, N.C.

“He’s full go,” Bowles said after Friday’s practice. “He’ll be ready to go on Sunday. We expect him to be the same as he always was.”

The Buccaneers win the NFC South for the third consecutive season and would host a wild-card playoff game with a win over the Panthers (2-14).

Mayfield absorbed a blow to the ribs from Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu last week but remained in the game, although he appeared uncomfortable afterward.

X-rays were negative.

In his first season with the Buccaneers, the 28-year-old Mayfield has completed 64.4 percent of his passes for a 3,907 yards with 28 touchdowns — both career highs — and 10 interceptions in 16 starts. He also has rushed for a score.

Bowles also said cornerback Carlton Davis (concussion) and tight end Ko Kieft (shoulder) will play Sunday.

The Buccaneers also could win the division if they tie the Panthers and the New Orleans Saints lose to the Atlanta Falcons or tie.

The Buccaneers would still clinch a playoff berth with a tie, plus a loss by the Seattle Seahawks and a Green Bay Packers loss or tie.

Buccaneers lose DB Carlton Davis to quad injury

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis exited Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Mass., due to a left quadriceps injury.

Davis was injured while playing on special teams with 1:49 left in the second quarter. He punched the turf in pain while lying face down and was eventually helped off the field.

The loss of Davis further weakened Tampa Bay’s cornerback position. The team was so strapped at the position that it signed Richard Sherman earlier this week and started him against the Patriots.

Davis has one interception this season and six in 45 career games (44 starts).

Bucs rule out RB Jones for Saturday

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Ronald Jones will not play and cornerback Carlton Davis will be a game-time decision Saturday in Detroit.

Head coach Bruce Arians said Thursday that Jones will not be able to clear COVID-19 protocols in time. Davis left last Sunday’s win in Atlanta with a groin injury.

Jones was recovering from surgery on his fractured left pinkie finger when he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Dec. 16.

Jones, 23, leads the Buccaneers and ranks eighth in the NFL with 900 rushing yards in 13 games. He has 28 catches for 165 yards and has scored seven touchdowns (six rushing). He hurt his finger while blocking during a Week 14 win against the Minnesota Vikings.

Leonard Fournette likely will make his second straight start for Jones when the Bucs (9-5) face the Lions (5-9). Fournette ran for 49 yards and two touchdowns in the 31-27 victory against the Falcons.

Davis, 23, has started all 14 games this season. He leads the NFL with 18 passes defensed and leads the Bucs with four interceptions to go along with 68 tackles.

Tampa Bay will clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie against the Lions, or if the Chicago Bears lose or tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
