FAU QB Casey Thompson, former Longhorn, commits to Oklahoma

Casey Thompson, who spent three seasons playing quarterback at Texas, is heading to the other side of the Red River rivalry and joining Oklahoma.

The Florida Atlantic transfer announced his commitment to the Sooners on Thursday. He is a native of Oklahoma City.

“Dear Oklahoma, I’m coming home,” he posted on social media with images of him in Oklahoma gear.

It’s likely Thompson will enter 2024 as the backup to Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold, who is taking over for Dillon Gabriel.

Thompson’s 2023 season was cut short when he tore an ACL in the Owls’ third game of the season Sept. 16 against Clemson. He finished the interrupted campaign with 509 passing yards, five touchdown and five interceptions.

Thompson threw for 2,422 yards, 30 touchdowns and nine picks in 19 games at Texas from 2019-21. He transferred to Nebraska in 2022 and played in 10 games, throwing for 2,407 yards, 17 TDs and 10 picks.

Report: FAU QB Casey Thompson tore ACL

Florida Atlantic starting quarterback Casey Thompson tore his ACL during Saturday’s game and is done for the season, ESPN reported Monday.

Thompson took a hard hit in the second quarter of the Owls’ 48-14 loss at Clemson on Saturday, leaving the game after spending several minutes on the turf. He did not return. He had thrown two interceptions to that point.

He was replaced by Daniel Richardson, who threw for 120 yards and a pick the rest of the way.

Thompson, a sixth-year player, was in his first season at FAU after stops at Texas (2019-21) and Nebraska (2022).

He’s thrown for 5,338 career yards and 52 touchdowns against 24 interceptions.

Nebraska starting QB Casey Thompson enters portal

Casey Thompson, Nebraska’s starting quarterback in 2022, entered the transfer portal on Friday.

It is his second straight year in the portal. Last offseason, he chose the Huskers when he transferred from Texas.

As a graduate transfer, he has one remaining season of eligibility.

Thompson started 10 games last season for Nebraska, completing 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,407 yards with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He added five rushing scores.

Offseason shoulder surgery limited him this spring, and Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims passed him on the depth chart. Injuries, most notably a dislocated and torn thumb at Texas, have plagued Thompson throughout his career.

At Texas (2018-21), Thompson played in 19 games with 10 starts, throwing for 2,422 yards and 30 touchdowns. In 2021, he had three games with five or more touchdowns.

In three seasons at Georgia Tech, Sims played in 24 games (23 starts) and threw for 4,464 yards with 30 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions. He added 1,152 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.

Nebraska QB Casey Thompson (arm) considered day-to-day

Nebraska starting quarterback Casey Thompson is day-to-day after suffering an injury to his throwing arm during last Saturday’s 26-9 home loss to Illinois.

Thompson didn’t practice Tuesday, interim coach Mickey Joseph told reporters, but there’s still a chance he could play this Saturday against visiting Minnesota.

In the meantime, backup quarterbacks Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers split reps with the first-string offense evenly on Tuesday, according to Joseph.

Thompson left the Illinois game in the second quarter after throwing his second interception. At the time, Joseph said Thompson was hit in the elbow and he experienced numbness in his fingers.

Thompson finished the game 7 of 15 for 172 yards, one touchdown and two picks. Smothers played the rest of the quarter and Purdy took over for the second half.

A transfer from Texas, Thompson has thrown for 2,023 yards, 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season while completing 62.9 percent of his passes.

Nebraska QB Casey Thompson departs with hand injury

Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson sustained an apparent injury to his right hand in the second quarter against Illinois in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday and was not expected to return.

Thompson, who was coming off a 354-yard passing performance in a loss to Purdue on Oct. 15, was hurt when he was hit while releasing a pass with 6:31 left before halftime.

Illinois’ Sydney Brown intercepted the fluttering pass and returned it 37 yards to the Nebraska 11-yard line. Chase Brown later scored on a 1-yard run to vault the Fighting Illini to a 13-9 lead.

Sophomore quarterback Logan Smothers took over at quarterback for the Cornhuskers for the rest of the half, completing his only pass attempt and rushing twice for six yards.

As halftime came to an end, Thompson returned to the Nebraska sideline without a helmet and did not join the team for second-half warmups, according to the Illini Inquirer.

Redshirt freshman Chubba Purdy was at quarterback for Nebraska to start the second half.

Thompson, a junior who is in his first year with Nebraska after three seasons at Texas, went 7 of 15 for 172 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the first half.

He began the day with 4,273 yards passing in his career with a completion percentage of 63.9 percent and 41 touchdowns versus 17 interceptions.

Illinois led Nebraska 20-6 at halftime.

Nebraska names Texas transfer Casey Thompson as QB1

Texas transfer Casey Thompson will be Nebraska’s starting quarterback for the Aug. 27 season opener against Northwestern.

Cornhuskers coach Scott Frost confirmed on his radio show Thursday night that Thompson won the battle with Florida State transfer Chubba Purdy and Logan Smothers.

Frost said Thompson “will take the first rep” but he “wouldn’t be surprised” if more than one signal-caller sees action this season.

Thompson, who transferred in January, led the Big 12 with 24 touchdown passes last season and passed for 2,113 yards with nine interceptions in 12 games for the Longhorns.

A junior, Thompson underwent thumb surgery on his throwing hand this summer after playing through ligament damage in 2021.

“There’s no substitute for having played a lot of college football, and there’s been fewer mistakes from him,” Frost said of Thompson. “It really was a big jump, too, from spring ball to fall. That thumb was probably bothering him worse than he let on. He’s throwing it way better now.”
Coming off a disappointing 3-9 season, the Cornhuskers have a new offensive coordinator in Mark Whipple. In the same role last season at Pitt, Whipple helped turn quarterback Kenny Pickett into a Heisman Trophy finalist and a first-round NFL draft pick.

Thompson completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 2,422 yards and 30 touchdowns in 19 games over three years in Austin.

“He’s got a really good feel for the pocket, throws well, he’s doing a really good job with our run stuff, and that was a little bit new for him,” Frost said. “He’s a football-savvy kid.”

QB Casey Thompson transferring from Texas to Nebraska

Former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson announced Friday on Instagram that he is transferring to Nebraska.

He is a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining due to the NCAA’s COVID-19 waiver.

Thompson entered the transfer portal last month after former five-star recruit Quinn Ewers announced he was transferring from Ohio State to Texas.

Thompson started 10 games for the Longhorns in 2021, passing for 2,113 yards and a Big 12-best 24 touchdowns with nine interceptions. He battled through a thumb injury for much of the season.

Reports: Texas QB Casey Thompson enters transfer portal

Five days after Quinn Ewers announced he was transferring to Texas, the Longhorns’ incumbent quarterback is apparently on his way out.

Casey Thompson, who started 10 games for Texas this past season, has decided to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple media reports Friday.

Thompson threw for 2,113 yards and a Big 12-best 24 touchdowns with nine interceptions in 2021. He battled through a thumb injury for much of the season.

Thompson has one year of eligibility remaining and is expected to draw significant interest as a graduate transfer.

Ewers, regarded as the top quarterback in the Class of 2022, initially committed to Texas before ultimately deciding to enroll early at Ohio State. He only took two snaps this past season, reportedly made more than $1 million in NIL deals, and announced his decision to transfer to Texas on Sunday.

Texas went 5-7 (3-6 Big 12) this past season in Steve Sarkisian’s first year at the helm.

Casey Thompson leads No. 21 Texas against No. 6 Oklahoma

Casey Thompson grew up immersed in Oklahoma football.

Thompson’s father, Charles, starred at quarterback for the Sooners in the late 1980s, leading Oklahoma to a pair of wins over archrival Texas. His brother, Kendal, played quarterback for the Sooners nearly a decade ago.

But Saturday, Casey Thompson will be on the other side of one of college football’s top rivalries, starting at quarterback for the No. 21 Longhorns when they take on the No. 6 Sooners in Dallas’ Cotton Bowl.

“Obviously, everyone knows my story. I’m from Oklahoma and I play for Texas, and so that alone is unique,” Thompson said. “But I’m just trying to focus on the matchup, focus on the game play, and focus on just keeping this offense and this team focused, and being able to just quiet out the noise.”

Thompson was heavily recruited by the Sooners in the 2018 class, especially late in the process after Cameron Rising flipped from Oklahoma to Texas. But Thompson chose to stick with the Longhorns, both in signing even after Rising’s flip and then sitting behind Sam Ehlinger for his first three seasons until he took over for Ehlinger in the Longhorns’ 2020 Alamo Bowl win over Colorado.

Thompson’s candidacy to take over permanently for Ehlinger got a boost in the bowl when he threw for four touchdowns in the second half. Following preseason camp, Hudson Card earned the starting nod from new coach Steve Sarkisian, who then turned to Thompson to take over the starting role in Game 3.

The Longhorns (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) have been much better offensively since Thompson took over, averaging 558 yards of total offense in the three games the junior has started, more than 200 more than they averaged in the first two games with Card starting.

While Thompson has played a big role in the Longhorns’ offense surge, running back Bijan Robinson has been perhaps the biggest reason for Texas’ improvement. Robinson has rushed for 480 yards over the last three games.

Oklahoma (5-0, 2-0) has flirted with danger in all four of its games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents, winning each by a touchdown or less.

One of the Sooners’ issues has been getting their defense off the field. Opponents have converted just 34.7% of their third downs, but have attempted 19 fourth-down conversions — tied for most in FBS — and have converted 12 of them.

“We’ve had a number of time we’ve gotten opponents down to third down early in the series, and you’ve got to capitalize on those especially early in the game,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said. “It’s so important as far as setting a tone that way. We’ve done so many good things defensively this year, but we haven’t played our best early.”

Oklahoma has won the last three meetings between the teams (including the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game), and has won four of the last five in the annual October clash at the State Fair of Texas.

It will be the first taste of the rivalry for Sarkisian, who replaced Tom Herman in January.

“I love the pomp and pageantry of college football, I love the history, I love the nostalgia,” Sarkisian said. “To think this is the 117th time these two schools are meeting — that’s a crazy number, you know? So from that aspect of it, the State Fair, all that stuff, I’m looking forward to it.”

Freshman QB Hudson Card will start Texas’ opener

New Texas coach Steve Sarkisian announced his decision Monday regarding the quarterback position. Actually, he announced two decisions.

Redshirt freshman Hudson Card will draw the season-opening start Saturday for the 21st-ranked Longhorns against 23rd-ranked Louisiana in Austin, Texas, but junior Casey Thompson will see action in the contest, too.

“We’ll continue to evaluate from there, but that’s the direction we’re going this weekend.” Sarkisian said.

The coach added, “Hudson is a very talented young man. He’s got great work ethic. It’s really not a knock on Casey. Both guys really started to perform well after that first scrimmage. It was a tough call, but I think, in general, you try to make the best decision for the program at that time. …

“The good part for both of our guys is that we’re improving on offense. Incorporating the tight ends has been helpful. The receiver picture is starting to clear itself up and what we have at running back. All in all, I think the offense is starting to elevate its play and it’s helping the quarterbacks.”

Thompson appeared in four games in 2019 and three games in 2020. Overall, the Oklahoma City native has completed 20 of 29 passes for 309 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Thompson’s top performance came in the 2020 Alamo Bowl, when he was 8 of 10 for 170 yards and four touchdowns after starter Sam Ehlinger exited due to an injury. Thompson led Texas to a 55-23 win over Colorado.

Card, an Austin native, was a highly touted prospect out of Austin’s Lake Travis High School. He has appeared in two career games for the Longhorns, completing 1-of-3 passes for five yards and rushing four times for 11 yards.
