Bills sign Chase Claypool, Deion Jones, Dawuane Smoot

The Buffalo Bills signed wide receiver Chase Claypool and two others to one-year deals, the team announced Friday.

Claypool, 25, most recently played for the Miami Dolphins, his third team in the past two seasons. He played nine games for the Dolphins, catching four passes, after a trade in October from the Chicago Bears. He had spent just under a year with the Bears, coming from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a November 2022 trade.

Claypool started his career with the Steelers, who selected the former Notre Dame standout in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He has 175 catches for 2,261 yards and 13 touchdowns in 58 games (32 starts) with the Steelers, Bears and Dolphins.

The Bills also announced one-year deals with linebacker Deion Jones and defensive end Dawuane Smoot.

Jones, 29, played his first six seasons with the Falcons and topped 100 tackles in five of them, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2017. A second-round pick by Atlanta in 2016, Jones has 731 tackles, 12 sacks and 13 interceptions in 109 games (91 starts).

He played for the Cleveland Browns in 2022 and Carolina Panthers in 2023.

Smoot, 29, was a 2017 third-round draft pick by the Jaguars and has 23.5 sacks, 64 QB hits and five forced fumbles in 99 career games (17 starts), all with Jacksonville

Dolphins acquire WR Chase Claypool from Bears

The Miami Dolphins acquired wide receiver Chase Claypool in a trade with the Chicago Bears on Friday.

The Dolphins also received a 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round selection the same draft.

Miami announced that the two sides had agreed to terms on the deal, pending the result of a physical.

It’s a fresh start for Claypool, who was scratched from Chicago’s game-day squad for the second week in a row and sat out the Bears’ 40-20 win Thursday against the Washington Commanders.

He was inactive for the previous game Sunday against the Denver Broncos, days after he criticized the team regarding his lack of involvement in the game plan.

On Monday, the Bears told Claypool to stay home while the squad practiced ahead of the Washington game. Then on Thursday, general manager Ryan Poles weighed in on where Claypool stands with the club, less than a year after the receiver arrived in a midseason trade.

“I think Chase is going to learn from this situation, we all will, and I wish him luck moving forward throughout his career,” Poles said while speaking before the game on ESPN 1000 radio.

“You’re always disappointed in the situation and it’s definitely something I take ownership of. Last year, in the situation we were in, we wanted to add another receiver to the offense, not only to help us be more productive but also to help Justin (Fields, the quarterback) take the next step.

“The right thought process was there and I feel comfortable with that. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and we were hoping for (Claypool) to be a little bit more productive and be someone that could help us take it to the next level.

“I wish him luck.”

Claypool, 25, was acquired last November in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has just four catches (on 14 targets) for 51 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He is playing in the final season of his rookie contract.

The 2020 second-round draft pick has 171 catches for 2,235 yards and 13 touchdowns in 49 games (32 starts) with the Steelers and the Bears.

WR Chase Claypool to remain in Bears’ doghouse

Chicago head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday that wide receiver Chase Claypool will not be in the building this week as the 0-4 Bears prepare to visit the Washington Commanders on Thursday night.

Claypool was a healthy scratch for Sunday’s 31-28 home loss to the Denver Broncos after venting his frustration over his role in the offense. He was told not to attend the game at Soldier Field, according to a team spokesperson.

Eberflus told Chicago’s ESPN 1000 radio on Monday morning that Claypool will spend the week in the doghouse.

“He’s not going to be in the building this particular week on this short week,” Eberflus said.

After Claypool was criticized for making several half-hearted efforts to block on running plays in a season-opening loss to Green Bay, Eberflus said the team was considering “all possibilities” with the 25-year-old wideout.

Acquired in a trade last November with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Claypool has just four catches (on 14 targets) for 51 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He is playing in the final season of his rookie contract.

The 2020 second-round draft pick has 171 catches for 2,235 yards and 13 touchdowns in 49 games (32 starts) with the Steelers and Bears.

Bears WR Chase Claypool inactive vs. Broncos

Chicago Bears wide receiver Chase Claypool was made a healthy scratch prior to Sunday’s game against the visiting Denver Broncos.

The move comes on the heels of Claypool venting his frustration with how he is being used in the offense.

Claypool, acquired in a trade last November with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has just four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He is playing in the final season of his rookie contract.

The 2020 second-round pick has 171 catches for 2,235 yards and 13 touchdowns in 49 games (32 starts) with the Steelers and Bears.

Bears wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown was listed as active for the first time this season.

In addition to Claypool, the Bears (0-3) made the following players inactive for Sunday’s game: running back D’Onta Foreman, defensive backs Eddie Jackson and Jaylon Johnson and quarterback Nathan Peterman.

As for the Broncos (0-3), safeties Justin Simmons and JL Skinner, linebackers Frank Clark and Josey Jewell, defensive end Ronnie Perkins, defensive tackle Mike Purcell and center Alex Forsyth were ruled inactive.

Bears considering ‘all possibilities’ with Chase Claypool

Chicago Bears wide receiver Chase Claypool’s Week 1 effort, or lack thereof, has coach Matt Eberflus considering “all possibilities” heading into Week 2.

Replays from Sunday’s season-opening 38-20 home loss to Green Bay show Claypool making several half-hearted attempts to block on running plays.

Claypool, 25, was targeted only twice by quarterback Justin Fields and recorded no catches against the Packers.

On Wednesday, Eberflus was asked if the team is considering deactivating Claypool in favor of Equanimeous St. Brown for Sunday’s road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We’re looking at all possibilities right now,” Eberflus said, per the Chicago Tribune. “I’m not going to talk about who’s going to be up or down for the game for obvious reasons. We’re looking at all things to make our team better.”

Claypool, acquired in a trade last November with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is playing in the final season of his rookie contract.

The 2020 second-round pick has 167 catches for 2,184 yards and 12 touchdowns in 47 games (31 starts) with the Steelers and Bears.

Reports: Steelers trade WR Chase Claypool to Bears

The Chicago Bears acquired third-year wide receiver Chase Claypool from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday for a second-round draft pick in 2023, multiple outlets reported.

The move comes in the aftermath of the Bears trading away linebacker Roquan Smith on Monday and defensive end Robert Quinn last week.

The 6-foot-4 Claypool has 32 catches for 311 yards and a touchdown in eight starts this season. His catches would lead the Bears and his yards would be second only to Darnell Mooney’s 364. Equanimeous St. Brown is next among Bears wideouts with 11 catches.

Claypool, 24, has 153 career catches for 2,044 yards and 12 TDs in 39 games (27 starts) for the Steelers, who selected him in the second round of the 2020 draft.

The Steelers acquired the Bears’ second-round pick, not the one Chicago received from the Ravens in the Smith trade. The Bears’ selection likely will fall earlier in the second round than Baltimore’s traded pick.

Steelers WR Chase Claypool injures shoulder in practice

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool sustained a shoulder injury during Friday’s practice.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Claypool’s injury was “probably not serious” and that the team does not have a “high level of concern.”

Claypool, 24, had just two touchdown catches last season after totaling nine during his rookie campaign. He also had 59 receptions for 860 yards in 2021.

Claypool likely is in line for more targets this season with fellow wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster now in Kansas City.

Report: Steelers’ Chase Claypool week-to-week with toe injury

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool is considered week-to-week with a toe injury, NFL Network reported on Wednesday.

The news likely can be construed as positive considering there was speculation that the injury could have sidelined Claypool for the rest of the season.

Claypool underwent an MRI on his toe on Tuesday, one day after sustaining the injury during Pittsburgh’s 29-27 victory over the Chicago Bears.

Claypool, 23, has 29 catches for 433 yards and one touchdown in seven games (six starts). He hauled in nine TD catches last season as a rookie.

Steelers WR Chase Claypool having MRI on toe

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool is having an MRI exam on his injured toe Tuesday.

Claypool suffered the injury during Monday night’s win over the Chicago Bears, though Steelers coach Mike Tomlin offered no details as to how or when it happened. Claypool left the game during the fourth quarter but did return. He finished with three catches for 30 yards.

The results will determine Claypool’s availability this week in practice and Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. The Steelers lost JuJu Smith-Schuster for the season last month with a shoulder injury.

Claypool, 23, has 29 catches for 433 yards and one touchdown in seven games (six starts). He hauled in nine TD catches last season as a rookie.

Also, Tomlin said he expects tight end Eric Ebron back at practice Wednesday after he missed the past two games with a hamstring injury.

Injuries could also limit practice participation of defensive linemen Cam Heyward (ankle) and Isaiah Buggs (hip) and linebacker Robert Spillane (ankle).

The Steelers (5-3) host the Lions (0-8) on Sunday in Week 10.
