Tennessee running back DeSean Bishop (18) celebrates after a big run during Tennessee's game against Chattanooga in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.

No. 15 Tennessee scores on first 7 possessions, routs Chattanooga

Redshirt freshman Nico Iamaleava threw for three first-half touchdowns and running back Dylan Sampson reached the end zone three times before halftime as No. 15 Tennessee trounced visiting Chattanooga 69-3 in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Knoxville, Tenn.

Dont’e Thornton Jr. made two of the early touchdown catches, with Tennessee scoring on its first seven possessions.

A 45-0 halftime score gave the Volunteers plenty of time to back off in advance of next Saturday’s Top 25 showdown against North Carolina State in Charlotte, N.C. The score was 24-0 less than 12 minutes into the game.

Iamaleava finished 22-for-28 for 314 passing yards — all in the first half. For the game, 14 different Volunteers made at least one reception.

Iamaleava, making his second career start, threw four yards to Ethan Davis for his first scoring toss, just four plays after Chattanooga’s first possession ended with a fumble. He had three touchdown throws in the game’s first 20 minutes.

Sampson’s scoring runs of 1, 3 and 5 yards were part of 124 rushing yards on 12 carries in the first half. Sampson, a junior, eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fourth time in his career.

DeSean Bishop also ran for a Tennessee touchdown from 22 yards out and Khalifa Keith had a 1-yard TD run. Max Gilbert kicked field goals of 36 and 42 yards for the Volunteers, who added a late-game TD off a blocked punt by Jordan Ross.

Tennessee used 11 snaps to go 65 yards on its first touchdown drive, but other scoring possessions came much quicker.

Chattanooga’s first possession of the second half resulted in Jude Kelley’s 43-yard field goal. Quarterback Chase Artopoeus finished 12-for-23 for 141 passing yards.

The Volunteers rolled up 502 yards of total offense in the first half compared to Chattanooga’s 83 yards.

The Mocs are a nationally ranked Football Championship Subdivision team, but they never found their footing in this first game of the year.

Tennessee has won 11 straight games in the series since a Chattanooga victory in 1958.

Milroe tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Burton, McClellan scored on a 2-yard run and Williams added an 11-yard scamper in the Crimson Tide’s 21-point first quarter.

Milroe threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Ouzts and Will Reichard booted a 50-yard field goal to make it 31-0 with 7:07 left in the half.

Chattanooga then got on the board on Appleberry’s dazzling 40-yard scoring run down the left sideline with 3:39 left in the half.

No. 8 Alabama remains in CFP chase, welcomes Chattanooga

No. 8 Alabama takes a break from the rigors of the Southeastern Conference when it takes on FCS program Chattanooga on Saturday at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Crimson Tide clinched a spot in the SEC Championship Game with last weekend’s 49-21 rout of host Kentucky. Alabama (9-1) has reeled off eight straight victories since a Week 2 loss to then-No. 11 Texas.

But Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban is emphasizing to the players that they need to approach the contest against Chattanooga (7-3) in the same serious manner that they would a conference foe.

“This is either a game that you focus on correctly, you go out and practice and prepare correctly, and you build on the momentum that you’ve improved with over the last few weeks and that helps you get better for what’s coming up in the future,” Saban told reporters. “If you don’t do that, you don’t have a good showing, you sort of lose your rhythm — and rhythm is a little bit like momentum. Sometimes, you lose momentum in the game, it’s hard to get it back.”

Alabama has won its past three games by an average of 18.7 points, scoring at least 34 points in each contest. The other two victories were against then-No. 17 Tennessee and then-No. 14 LSU.

Saban doesn’t want there to be a drop-off down the stretch with two regular-season games remaining before the Dec. 2 title matchup against top-ranked Georgia.

“If you’re going to peak at the right time, you can’t have peaks and valleys,” Saban said. “You have to keep going in the right direction, and that’s what we want to get our players to focus on this week in practice in preparation for this game.”

One player excelling at a high level is quarterback Jalen Milroe, who became the first Crimson Tide player to pass for three touchdowns and rush for three scores in the same game during the victory over Kentucky.

The previous week, Milroe became the first Alabama quarterback to rush for four touchdowns in a single game.

Over the past five games, Milroe has passed for 10 touchdowns and rushed for eight.

“I think the team has a lot of confidence in him,” Saban said of Milroe. “He’s become a leader. He’s given us an opportunity to get where we want to go.”

Chattanooga, which is ranked 16th in the FCS Coaches Poll, is coming off a bye. The previous week, it lost 17-14 at home to No. 2 Furman in a setback that put the Mocs on the bubble for an at-large FCS playoff spot.

Chattanooga coach Rusty Wright is confident the game against the Crimson Tide won’t be his team’s final game of the season.

“We still have a lot to play for,” Wright said. “I believe in my heart that we’re going to play again (after Alabama). I don’t have any ideas or clues, but in my heart I know what this team’s been through and we should still be ready to play.”

Chase Artopoeus has passed for 2,672 yards and 20 touchdowns against seven interceptions for the Mocs.

Defensively, preseason All-American cornerback Kameron Brown has three interceptions — including his second career touchdown return — to raise his career total to 11.

Alabama is 13-0 all-time against Chattanooga. The Crimson Tide won the last meeting, 31-3 in 2016.

Late pick six helps Kentucky hold off Chattanooga

Tyrell Ajian returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter as Kentucky staved off an upset attempt and registered a 28-23 victory over Chattanooga in a nonconference game Saturday at Lexington, Ky.

Will Levis passed for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Wildcats (3-0). Wan’Dale Robinson had eight receptions for 111 yards, Isaiah Epps and Izayah Cummings caught scoring passes and Josh Ali tacked on a touchdown run for Kentucky.

Ailym Ford rushed for 128 yards on 21 carries and Reginald Harrison had nine receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown for the Mocs, the 22nd-ranked FCS program. Chattanooga lost its 55th consecutive game to SEC teams since beating Tennessee in 1958.

Cole Copeland completed 21 of 35 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while rushing for a score for the Mocs (1-2). Aaron Sears kicked three field goals.

Chattanooga trailed by five and was stationed at the Wildcats’ 35-yard line when Copeland threw into double coverage. Ajian made the interception at the 5 and navigated toward the left and sprinted down the sideline to give Kentucky a 28-16 lead with 7:40 left.

The Mocs charged back with a 14-play, 75-yard drive and Copeland scored on a 2-yard keeper to make it a five-point margin with 1:20 to play.

Ali recovered the ensuing onside kick and Kentucky ran out the clock for its 13th straight nonconference victory.

Kentucky outgained Chattanooga 348-339 while committing three turnovers. The Mocs’ only miscue was the costly interception.

Sears booted a 43-yard field goal with 10:43 left in the third quarter as Chattanooga pulled within 14-13.

Rashun Freeman intercepted Levis late in the third quarter at the Mocs’ 34-yard line. Chattanooga drove 53 yards on seven plays to set up Sears’ 30-yard field goal that gave the Mocs a 16-14 edge with 13:27 remaining in the game.

The Wildcats answered with a swift seven-play, 77-yard drive. Levis, who completed 23 of 35 passes, concluded it with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Cummings to give Kentucky a five-point lead with 10:18 left.

Kentucky opened the contest with Ali’s 11-yard scoring scamper on the fly sweep. The Mocs answered with Copeland’s 12-yard scoring pass to Harrison with 6:46 left in the opening quarter.

The Wildcats moved back ahead when Levis threw a 20-yard touchdown to Epps to make it 14-7.
