Report: Seahawks RB Chris Carson retiring with neck injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson is retiring due to a neck injury, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

The team reportedly will release the two-time 1,000-yard rusher with a failed physical designation.

The 27-year-old Carson would be entitled to receive “several million” in injury protection benefits under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, per the report. He signed a two-year, $10.43 million deal in March 2021.

Carson suffered a neck injury in a Week 4 win against San Francisco last season and was placed on injured reserve on Oct. 16.

He later had surgery to repair the injury, finishing the season with 232 rushing yards and three touchdowns and six receptions for 29 yards in four starts.

A seventh-round pick in 2017, Carson rushed for 3,502 yards and 24 TDs and caught 107 passes for 804 yards and seven scores in 49 games (48 starts) over five seasons. He ran for 1,151 yards in 2018 and 1,230 in 2019.

Pete Carroll: Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) may face end of career

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson has not been cleared to return to football activities and will miss the team’s upcoming minicamp after neck surgery last November.

Seattle’s Pete Carroll said Thursday that Carson is set to have a “big assessment” with doctors in two weeks and stressed that no decision has been made, but the head coach struck an ominous tone regarding the career of the five-year veteran.

“Our guys love this game that they grow up playing, and when they sense that there may be an end to it, it’s hard. It’s difficult, and it’s real,” Carroll said, per the Seattle Times. “And we’re going to love him through it and help him as much as possible, if that’s the case, like we do with everybody when it comes to the end of it. It’s inevitable. It’s coming, but it’s always too soon, so we’re trying to fight that off.

“He’s battling. He’s doing everything he can. He wants to compete all the way to the last word. And so he’s going for it.”

Carson, 27, played in just four games (all starts) for Seattle in 2021, rushing for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He underwent season-ending cervical surgery in November.

He was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2018 and 2019 and has gained 3,502 rushing yards in 49 games (48 starts) over five seasons with Seattle. He has 24 rushing touchdowns and seven receiving scores in his career.

Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) to have season-ending surgery

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson elected to undergo season-ending surgery for a neck injury that has kept him sidelined since Week 4.

Coach Pete Carroll told reporters Friday that Carson, who was already on injured reserve, will be back in 2022.

Carson was designated to return to practice earlier this month but was never activated to the main roster. His surgical procedure is to fix what Carroll characterized as “wear-and-tear.”

The Seahawks’ lead back only played four games in 2021 and carried the ball 54 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns, adding six receptions for 29 yards. He was a 1,000-yard rusher in 2018 and 2019 and has gained 3,502 rushing yards in 49 games (48 starts) over five seasons with Seattle.

He has 24 rushing touchdowns and seven receiving scores in his career.

The Seahawks (3-6) have relied on Alex Collins and Rashaad Penny in the run game since Carson’s injury.

Seahawks expect RB Chris Carson (neck) back at practice

The Seattle Seahawks expect running back Chris Carson, who has missed the past four games with a neck injury, back at practice Wednesday.

The team is expected to designate him for return from injured reserve. At that point, the Seahawks will have 21 days to activate him to the 53-man roster.

“What I was told today is that Wednesday he’ll be on the field,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “We’ll see how that goes.”

Carson hasn’t played since Week 4, a Seattle win over the San Francisco 49ers. He had rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns before getting hurt.

Alex Collins has started the past four games at running back, rushing for 227 yards and a touchdown during that span.

The Seahawks (3-5) will get back quarterback Russell Wilson this week after he was cleared to return Monday. He’s expected to start Sunday against the host Green Bay Packers (7-2). Also Monday, the team designated wide receiver Dee Eskridge and linebacker Nigel Warrior for return.

Eskridge has been out since Week 1 after suffering a concussion. His availability for this week’s game against the Packers is not known just yet.

“I can’t tell you that right now,” Carroll said of Eskridge. “He looked good running around today, that’s all I know. Let’s see where he is tomorrow and the next day.”

Seahawks RB Chris Carson, TE Gerald Everett out vs. Rams

Seattle running back Chris Carson has been ruled out for the host Seahawks against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

He will miss the NFC West tilt along with tight end Gerald Everett, who remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Carson (neck) was a game-time decision after missing every practice this week. The team evaluated him during pregame warmups and made the determination to sideline the fifth-year back. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Carson’s neck has “been bothering him all week.”

Alex Collins is expected to get the start against the Rams (3-1) at running back. Collins rushed 10 times for 46 yards and a score and caught two passes for 34 yards against the 49ers. Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas are behind Collins on the depth chart.

Everett was placed on the COVID list last week, missing Sunday’s Week 4 win against San Francisco. He started the first three games for the Seahawks (2-2), catching eight passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Earlier in the day, the Seahawks elevated wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to the active roster. Dorsett’s promotion from the practice squad fills the roster spot of rookie receiver Dee Eskridge, who was put on injured reserve Thursday with a concussion. Eskridge missed the past three games.

Dorsett started the season in Jacksonville but was released by the Jags in late September after appearing in one game. The 2015 first-round pick has 124 career catches for 1,634 yards and 11 touchdowns in 72 games (15 starts) for the Indianapolis Colts (2015-16), New England Patriots (2017-19) and Jaguars.

Seattle’s other inactives for TNF include DL Robert Nkemdiche, CB John Reid, and reserve OL Jake Curhan and Stone Forsythe.

Seahawks RB Chris Carson (neck) game-time decision vs. Rams

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson missed practice again Wednesday with a neck injury and will be a game-time decision Thursday night.

Carson is officially listed as questionable. He also missed Monday’s walk-through but was listed as a resting veteran.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Carson’s neck has “been bothering him all week.”

“Sometimes it flares up, sometimes it doesn’t,” Carroll said of Carson’s injury, noting that it’s “kind of a long-term” condition.

Carson rushed for just 30 yards on 13 attempts in last Sunday’s win over the San Francisco 49ers. On the season, Carson has 232 rushing yards and is averaging just 4.3 yards per carry, the lowest since his rookie season in 2017.

Alex Collins would get the start Thursday against the Los Angeles Rams (3-1) if Carson is unable to go. Collins gained 44 yards on 10 carries and a score vs. the 49ers.

The Seahawks have ruled out WR Dee Eskridge (concussion) for TNF. Defensive end Benson Mayowa (neck) is also questionable.

Reports: Seahawks, RB Chris Carson agree on new deal

The Seattle Seahawks and free agent running back Chris Carson reached an agreement on a two-year contract worth up to $14,625,000, according to multiple media reports Friday night.

Carson, 26, emerged as a key contributor in the Seahawks’ backfield over the past three seasons. He surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in 2018 and 2019, and last season he finished with nine touchdowns (five rushing, four receiving) in 12 games.

The Seahawks added a third void year to the deal to help with managing the salary cap, ESPN and NFL.com reported.

In 45 career games (44 starts), Carson has rushed for 3,270 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also has caught 101 passes for 775 yards and seven touchdowns.

Seattle drafted Carson in the seventh round (No. 249 overall) out of Oklahoma State in 2017.

Seahawks RBs Carson, Hyde inactive vs. 49ers

Seattle Seahawks running backs Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde were listed as inactive for Sunday’s home game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seahawks (5-1) also ruled out safety Jamal Adams, who will miss his fourth consecutive game with a groin injury.

Carson initially was listed as questionable to face the 49ers (4-3). He injured his foot during the first half of Seattle’s 37-34 loss in overtime to Arizona last Sunday.

Carson has 323 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also has three more scores as a receiver.

Hyde, who was listed as doubtful, will not play due to a hamstring injury.

Seattle is expected to rely on Travis Homer and rookie fourth-round pick DeeJay Dallas in the backfield on Sunday.

The Seahawks also ruled out guard Mike Iupati, cornerback Shaquill Griffin, safety Ugo Amadi and defensive end Benson Mayowa.

San Francisco quarterback CJ Beathard, wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Richie James, linebacker Kwon Alexander, safety Jaquiski Tartt and cornerback Ken Webster are inactive for Sunday’s contest.

Seahawks RB Carson to have MRI on ankle

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson will have an MRI on his injured ankle Monday.

Carson left Sunday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals in the second quarter and didn’t return. Carson rushed five times for 34 yards in the game, won 37-34 by the Cardinals in overtime.

“We don’t know until we get an MRI what that means or what the extent of it is,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after the game.

Carson missed the playoffs last season with a hip injury and played in just four games of his rookie season in 2017 because of a broken leg.

Carlos Hyde rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown in Carson’s absence.

Carson has 323 yards rushing with three touchdowns on the season. He has 2,912 rushing yards in 39 games (38 starts) for the Seahawks, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2017 draft.

Carson, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract.
